In Yuhua Hawker Centre, there are many stalls with long queues in the morning, one of them was Lai Heng Handmade Teochew Kueh. They made the Teochew Kuehs at the stall front and freshly steamed by batches in the back. There are steamed or pan fried kuehs. I had ordered a mixed of Teochew Pan Fried Kueh at three for $2. The Teochew Kuehs were very piping hot, almost burnt my tongue with my first bite. The Teochew Kueh's appearance looked well pan fried but the taste was bland even with rice or chives fillings. The sweet sauce given was quite salty instead of sweet. Overall, the Teochew Kuehs were very freshly made but the taste was quite bland. continue reading

For breakfast on sunday, my wife and I went to this food centre for a change instead of eating at home. We saw quite a lot of tables having the kuehs bought from this stall and we decided to try it as well. The kuehs are all freshly made everyday and if you want it to be pan fried, it will be fried on the spot. I love the kuehs when pan fried as the outer skin will be crispy and much more fragrant. The kueh fillings are also generous. I ordered one peng kueh, one soon kueh and two vegetable kueh. Because of the glutinous rice in the peng kueh, I was quite full after the end of the meal. The vegetable kueh is my first time trying it and it is surprisingly nice, the filling is moist and flavourful and it is really good. The sweet sauces also helped in flavouring the kuehs, though I think it is really very tasty on its own. Do try it. continue reading

I lived here for more than a decade and I hardly go to the hawker centre which is just 5 minutes from my block. And I even heard about this stall from my friend. Feel so ashamed. But now then I got my hands on the nicest Peng Kueh and Soon Kueh, gonna have as much as I like. This stall is quite popular from the long queue which you can see. The kuehs are all made, steamed and pan-fried on the spot. So I can say that their kuehs are the freshest. I used to have it the traditional way which is the steamed version but here, they can pan-fry for you. And pan-frying seems to enhance the taste further. It is so delicious when you dip in the dark sauce or chilli. Marvellous. The fillings are generous. How can you just have one of each? But quite stuffed after each a piece. The price is quite reasonable for such nice local kuehs. Try it the pan-fried way and have it while it's hot. continue reading

Another popular stall in this food centre. Long queue can be spotted in the morning and weekends. I am always here to order their soon kueh and their glutinous rice cake. Both are equally good. It still tasted good even after left it for a few hours. The filling for the soon kueh is the usual turnips, carrot and dried shrimps. As for the glutinous rice cake, it is the glutinous rice with mushroom and dried shrimps. Their kuehs are good for breakfast and snack. continue reading

I accompanied my mum to collect some stuffs from her friend and we headed to the Yuhua market for brunch. My mum is very fond of soon kueh and yam kueh, she will never hesitate when she sees a stall selling it. An true enough there was a stall selling her favourite kueh. We ended up with soon kueh, Peng kueh and yam kueh. The soon kueh was really good, the turnip inside was cooked till very tasty. It contributed to the sweetness of the kueh. The Peng kueh was very chewy, the glutinous rice inside was rather sticky but cooked till very tasty. The yam kueh was my favourite, the yam flavour was really fragrant and it was very soft. They gave us chilli sauce and black sauce to go with it. The chilli sauce was really good, sweetish spicy. continue reading
