The plump butter croissant ($1.50) is wonderfully crisp and so buttery that it’s a heart attack waiting to happen. But I still prefer the one I had in Paris cuz that was ultra rich and yet so light.Even better is the almond croissant ($2.20) — moist frangipani filling inside and crisp almond sugar topping on the outside. This is something we’ll definitely get again! We had the custard and an pan (red bean) buns ($2 each). Both are good flavour-wise but more filling would be appreciated! After buying the breads, we went over to the basement of Plaza Singapura to devour these goodies. One auntie actually walked up to us and asked where did we get the breads from! See, that’s how appealing they are =) continue reading

Mirabelle Patisserie is tucked along a row of shops along Mackenzie Road near Little India station. It's a pretty small bakery, but everything they sell looks so good!Black-colored bread is definitely something one does not see often (except err...burnt toast). Two varieties of Bamboo Charcoal Buns ($2) are available at Mirabelle- anpan and custard. Why add bamboo charcoal to the bread? Well, it's touted to be detoxifying and to boost one's circulation and metabolism. I won't count on that, but I won't mind having these buns again 'cos I like how soft and fine they are. The amount of filling in the custard bun was too scant, but the an pan came with a reasonable amount of chunky adzuki paste which was thankfully not too sweet! But what truly makes this patisserie a star are the fabulous croissants they sell. The best part is, they're not even expensive. The savory ham and cheese ($1.80) made a wonderful pair with the perfectly buttery, crisp and flaky pastry. Worth every sinful calorie ;) I initially intended to save half for my mum but I ended up finishing the whole thing and heading back to get another. I also love how affordable these crossaints are.I probably won't bother having croissants from anywhere else from now on- Mirabelle's crossaints are simply stellar and the best in Singapore. There's the original variant too, as well as pain du chocolat (chocolate crossaint) and almond crossaint. continue reading
