Surrounded as it is by much more famous cafes, I'm actually rather surprised that PoTeaTo has lasted till now. First opened in August 2012, PoTeaTo is a privately run cafe, not operated under a group like the other cafes nearby, and as it's name suggests, specialises in potatoes and tea.

Ambience at PoTeaTo is rustic urban, with red brick and concrete walls flanking the interior, small tight spaces where wooden tables are laid out, and minimal decor. Yet, the place exudes a cozy, relaxing vibe, as evident by diners who linger over conversation and cups of tea here.

Service at PoTeaTo is largely self-service, with ordering and payment over the counter, though staff will serve orders to your table. I do commend them for being rather quick and efficient at clearing away tables, as well as being able to offer recommendations from the menu. However, there is very little other interaction with staff here.

Food at PoTeaTo is mainly Western style, with a focus on sandwiches, potatoes, and tea. I generally find the taste of dishes here to be hit or miss, mostly ranging from below average, to average at best. Sadly, there's nothing terribly exciting about the food options. Portion sizes are decent, and prices are comparable to most other cafes, budget about SGD $18 per person for a meal here.

The Sweet Potato Fries (SGD $7) here are very good! Thick cut and warm, you can taste the natural sweetness in the orange strips of sweet potato, with a lightness to the texture. Sprinkle a little salt and cracked black pepper, and it's good enough to eat on its own!

The Party Platter (SGD $18) is a decadent plate of fried stuff, but a combination of hit and miss. Of the items here, the Popcorn Chicken stood out for its crisp yet meaty chunks, with a nice savoury flavour. The Home Made Fish Balls were quite good, you can see it's tightly packed, and the flavour is akin to a Thai fish cake, some slight heat and good use of spices. The Potato Wedges were average, simply deep fried using the frozen version you can get in a supermarket, and the Spicy Mid-Wings were overseasoned and salty.

Iced Peach Lychee - $5.60

Hot Honey Lemon Tea - $4

I love my peach lychee but husband's lemon tea tasted a bit weird. Finally, I made a better choice than hubby! Woo hoo!

Sweet Potato Fries - $6.20

The sweet potato fries was served in a brown paper bag, cute & creative! It gave the idea of overflowing fries. Haha

But it was not just cute, but tasted real good too! A M-U-S-T order, because it was so addictive. Sweet and crispy, especially when it served hot! Dun wait for it to turn cold lah, a hot /warm item is of course best eaten when at its right temperature.

Another yummy item on the menu! The pork ribs was thick and juicy , finger-licking good! And it came with my new found love - garlic curry sauce and my all time favourite, potato wedges. I was a happy girl. ^_____^

Ordering and payment are made at the same time at the cashier counter. Free flow of plain water is available at a corner where all the cutleries are displayed.
Food serving time is within 15 minutes time and consider quite fast. Here are the foods that we ordered for our dinner.

Ala-carte Sweet Potato fries S$7.00. Generous portion served with crispy on the outside and soft in the inside.

Spaghetti Carbonara serves with cream sauce and crisp bacon S$12.00. The portioning is decent enough but the cream sauce is slightly diluted though. We thought that it would be nice to enhance the taste of cream sauce.
Teriyaki grilled salmon with creamy mashed potatoes and asparagus S$17.00 was pretty good. Chef did a good job with the grilled salmon. The salmon meat was soft and tender and blends well with the teriyaki sauce.

PoTeaTo provides a casual dinning place with average foods served and affordable pricing. However, I would suggest them to come up with more interesting dishes to attract customers in based on their potato theme concept. Nevertheless it is a nice place to relax and chill with friends as the place is not crowded with people.

But quite disappointed that they changed their menu (top right hand corner). There’s less variety and more expensive now. ):
Ordered their poteato dippers to try ($10). The description was crisp potatoes skin with salsa and cheese dips. So in my mind, i was like is it literally potatoes skins only?! That will be quite funny, $10 for just the skins. But yup, its actually like wedges but the ‘healthier; version as its really cut pieces from potatoes. Good for sharing as its really filling. Overdose of carbo. Not too oily though, crisp outer skin with soft inner potato flesh.
As there’s really limited choices, so the mains that we ordered were only Teriyaki Grilled Salmon ($17) & Cheesy Melt Beef Burger ($21). The Teriyaki Grilled Salmon is served with mashed potato and asparagus. Thick and rich teriyaki sauce that was a lil too overpowering and i find it a little salty. But overall, it has that jap flavour i feel. So on my very first trip there, i tried their tofu cheesecake and a cup of hot lemon tea. Trying tofu cheesecake for the first time, was refreshing, and i find the taste quite light. It’s like an alternative choice to the usual cheesecake. Its not as rich as the usual cheesecake. Got the combination of mashed up tofu mouthfeel with dense cheesecake feel. To sum up, probably after a change of menu and prices, will not want to go again.

Eating the Buffalo Wings ($10.20) was a hot and fiery experience! The wings are marinated in a hot sauce and you can feel the heat and spice with every bite, especially the skin, the meat inside is also spicy but to a lesser extent. My friend and I dont usually take very spicy stuff, and this level was too much for us, so we had to gulp iced water almost with every bite, but that said, we enjoyed it very much! It is hot and spicy, but it was very Shiok!! Because of the thick and rich sauce on the wings, eating the buffalo wings was a messy affair, we had to go wash our hands immediately after hahaha!

We also had the Classic Chicken Wings ($9.20). The moment it arrived on our table, we could smell the aroma of the chicken, and of course it was a great choice, very crispy, tender and delicious!

We were on a snack attack! Been long wanting to try the Sweet Potato Fries ($6.20), and we finally got the chance since we are in the mood for their small bites! It is indeed as good as we had heard on online reviews. The goodness of real sweet potato is evident with every bite, and it comes with a very taste-bud pleasing cheese sauce and a tangy tomato salsa sauce, though the sweet potato fries is good enough to eat on its own. It is worth mentioning that they are not salty like most fries are.

And, I finally got to try the Poteato Chips ($5.20). Just couldn't resist the thin and crispy hand sliced chips. I love it that they are so thin, it makes it all the more crispy and great to munch! I like my chips with the cheese sauce, it makes a perfect snack! The fries and chips comes with the same two sauces as the fries and a small serving of salad.

This is also the first time I am trying their spaghetti. I chose the Cream Sauce Spaghetti ($12). It is rich and creamy with lots of bacon bits, it is not exactly the best spaghetti around, but it is a decent and tasty one. Portion is just right. This is only available on the dinner menu.

Food and drinks are great at Poteato, at least they are to me. I particularly like the Iced Teas in Poteato, and their small bites snacks!

The cafe have different menus for brunch, lunch, tea and dinner. Will be back again for the lunch and dinner menu, and the potato chips too!!!

We ordered Breakkie Platter ($17), the hash brown was definitely better than Mac and the sauteed vegetables were also very tasty. However the scrambled eggs were a little bit bland and the sausages have a very strong porky pig smell.
We also ordered All American ($16). This is da bomb! The bacon was cooked till crispy and fragrant and the mushroom was flavourful. On top of that, potatoes were really yummy and the sunny side up was cooked to perfection (in my context is runny yolk and cooked whites). So I recommend this for brunch selection. If you are a small eater, you might like to consider 2 to share as well.
Last but not least, we ordered a pot of tea to share. Love the beautiful tea pot set and I feel it actually made the brunch experience a better one!
Overall the food here has its miss and hit. However for the service tendered, I would say it is really worth going back again. Hopefully they will expand soon so as to have more seatings available. By the way, there is no service charge or GST here.

Last but not least, the Fish and Chips! This was quite filling as the serving was quite big.

The exterior of the shop just beckons people to enter with its brick walls. Inside the same design follows with concrete and slate patterns. Another cool cafe to check out if you love food and design!

Fisherman's Pie - $15

Again, another pretty presentation with a bed of mash potato rose, sweet potato chips and salad. I added strawberries for the extra sweetness! =)

Beneath the mash potato, there was generous portion of seafood like squid, prawn and seafood. But I must say, the seafood didn't tasted so fresh, so that was abit disappointing.

The bill came up to close to $50 for 2 pax, still affordable and we enjoyed our dinner! *Blissful*

Eggless Chocolate Cake ($7.80) is our logical pick - after all it is the fattest, tallest cake slice out of all the available selections. PoTeaTo can really do better in their dessert variety. I was pleasantly surprised by the fullness of the chocolate taste upon the first mouthful, and immediately I wanted another and another bite of it! The top chocolate layering tastes like just pure, thick chocolate which my girlfriends liked a lot. I prefer the middle sections because it is less jelat but still retains the full-bodied chocolate taste. It is lighter than normal cakes, I think. But a little dry. You have to pair it with some tea or your throat will be parched after a while from eating this.

I was sharing this slice with three other girlfriends, lucky for that because even if I had a big appetite for desserts, I could not possibly finish this on my own. It will get really jelat after a while, so remember to share it with someone else.

H did not want to share the chocolate cake with us and so she ordered a Green Tea Cheesecake. I don't remember the price exactly, but it's slightly cheaper than $7.80 (should be around $7) but still pretty expensive given half the height it stood at compared to the chocolate cake.

Verdict of pinching a mouthful from her: I like this better than the chocolate cake, because the green tea flavour really hits the spot. It is fragrant and complements the cheesecake well. But it is priced too steeply by my standards.

We stayed in PoTeaTo for a little while before the dinner menu kicks in at 6pm. I decided on Spaghetti and Meatballs ($15) - it is me being unadventurous again because the other items on the menu just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Actually I don't really want to describe this too much because it is quite a disappointment. It tastes almost like my first attempt at cooking tomato spaghetti. I am not a good cook. You can probably guess what it tastes like. It is not inedible, but it is definitely not $15-standard. The meatballs were alright, but you can totally get better ones at Ikea.

PoTeaTo is somewhere that I will only go once for the experience but nothing in here to compel me to enter for a second round. There's a whole lot of improvement they can do in here. To their credit, their service is really down-to-earth and sincere, and this is a good place to chill at if you're in the area and well, it's mostly empty so you don't have to wait outside unlike 40 Hands.

Postscript: Their desserts are worth having, but the main courses... you can give it a skip.

I'm not a tea connoisseur so this review is based very much just on the taste from a layman's perspective. This was quite a light brew, it has a rich flowery fragrance and it was somewhat calming. Perhaps it was supposed to have just a light flavour to it, it tasted almost like chrysanthemum tea that has been freshly brewed, a tad on the bland side. A refreshing taste though, with a slight addition of the orange peel fragrance.

Persian Apple & Ginger ($7.80)

This was a much stronger brew compared to Thousand Nights. We all preferred this with a slightly stronger fragrance and the ginger taste that complemented the sweet apple fragrance very well.

Warm soup to start off our dinner, it was such a comfort for our stomachs. Loved this homemade blend of potato soup, where it was so flavourful and rich. In fact, you can even see small chunks of potatoes inside. The texture from the photos might look abit grainy but it was really very smooth and you could taste the fresh flavour of potato in every mouthful. The garlic baguette went well with a dip in the potato soup, though it would be been better if it was freshly toasted. It was slightly hard instead of crispy, hence giving a dull crunch when you bite into it. Nonetheless, this is strongly recommended for all potato fans!

If you love all kinds of mushrooms, this would perhaps taste heavenly to you. It was a little too strong for us, but I liked how it used real mushrooms in the making in order to produce such a flavourful soup. Definitely not a Campbell kind, you could taste how the flavour of the black mushrooms burst in your mouth with every spoonful, as if you're eating a full mouthful of fresh mushrooms. I'm not a fan of mushrooms, unless you count golden mushroom so try it for yourself!

I sure missed tartar sauce when I was in UK! Apparently only the more atas places serve fish and chips with tartar sauce, so I've learnt to appreciate it even if it was from MacDonald's. Anyway, I was captivated by the chips portion right upon serving. Perhaps one of the first places that serve sweet potato fries in fish and chips, it was a really good complement in our opinion.

The dory fish inside was very fresh, soft and tender but I found the batter a bit too thick, so it got pretty jelat after a while. The fries were really awesome! The potato fries reminded me of Long John fries, with more flavour to it. It had the fragrance of butter and and salted with the seasoning added onto it. The sweet potato fries were great too, not the kind you'll find at Taimei, it tasted rather homemade, with each fry packed with sweet potato mash that wasn't too soft and had a slight natural sweetness to it. I'm in love with the chips, and will probably come back to order their chips as a side in future!

Quite surprised to see three variations of sausages served instead of the usual. Of course, being the potato lover, the mash was the first I digged in to. What greeted my taste buds was a very homely touch, where you can taste some bits of potatoes cubes inside. The sauce was also a good complement with just a little salted taste to it and was very smooth to go with the mash.

I liked how there were three different sausages to have a taste of all different flavours at one go. Out of the three, I loved the cheese sausage (the one on the left) the most! Rich creamy cheese oozing out of the fleshy tender sausage, every mouthful was just so satisfying. Don't know the exact names for the rest, the one on the right was too salty for my liking, and the skin surrounding it was a little too thick. A great dish nonetheless, something that gives you variety within a plate.

Perhaps due to the effort taken in preparing this dish, we were told that it'll take about 25 minutes before we were served. Well worth the wait, I would say! Tenderly roasted chicken with slightly crispy skin and absolutely soft flesh inside. I would say it was very well roasted, as I'd usually expect a rather dry version of the chicken after roasting, but this was really juicy and tender. You can taste the marinated herbs that added to the wholesome taste of it, giving it a slightly interesting flavour, so it doesn't get too jelat.

Best of all, it came not with mashed potato but mashed sweet potato that gave the slight sweetness to complement the savory dish. I liked the fresh sweet potatoes used in the mixture, where you can taste the fibres and also some small bits of sweet potato. The selection of sweet potato was really good, it got me hooked for sure.

It tastes as devilishly sinful and rich as it looks. A thick layer of fudge on top with solid chocolate cake layers. It isn't the smooth kind you'll usually see due to the lack of eggs in this. I loved eggless chocolate cakes in India, as there were alot of vegetarians, and well, this was a pretty good match. It wasn't too sweet, and chocolate lovers would enjoy the richness of this slice. It got abit too jelat for us, would have been better if it was served with vanilla icecream or layers of fruit compote to give a slight refreshing twist to it. But that's just my preference, it's still one of their top sellers there.

I thought this was a must-try, replacing the usual coffee with earl grey tea, hence the name as well. I like how it was presented with the logo of their cafe sprinkled on top, somewhat like latte art. I would have preferred the cream cheese to be lighter, but it was of the right sweetness and went well with the earl grey sponge layers. Alot of the earl grey settled down at the bottom so a mouthful of the cream cheese with the sponge cake found right at the base was absolutely shiok with all the juices running amok in your mouth! The taste of earl grey could have been stronger, it tasted slightly like coffee still. A good attempt nonetheless, and something pretty special!

It might not be the best food around, but it's definitely had alot of homemade effort in it. I like the homely taste and touch to it and every single service staff was really great! They were very attentive and friendly, making sure you're well taken care of at any time. Extremely hospitable and cosy place that I'll definitely return again!
