Spizza Mercato: New Addition to The Senso Family
2015-06-22
A spin-off from Spizza – the company’s group of Italian pizzerias, Spizza Mercato doesn’t just serve affordable Italian fare (such as freshly-made thin-crust pizzas and pastas), but also boasts a gourmet retail section and a dedicated takeaway counter to cater to the working crowd and commuters from City Hall MRT Station nearby. Takeaways can be pre-ordered via Spizza’s mobile application or website then self-collected.

“Mercato” refers to the bustling marketplaces found close to fountains in piazzas all over Italy. This name is aptly given, as Spizza Mercato is located in front of the water feature at the basement of Capitol Piazza, a newly established, increasingly popular destination in town. The first antipasto served up was the delectable Burratina ($22, below). The star of the dish: Italian Burratina cheese specially brought in from Italy, which was rich and milky as it melted in my mouth, perfectly complementing the savoury Parma ham.

At first glance, I was a little apprehensive about the dull-green colour of the Green Spinach “Triangoli” ($18, below). However, within the cute geometrically-shaped pasta pieces was smooth spinach filling that was both tasty and fragrant. Combined with mushrooms in porcini and cream sauce, it tasted surprisingly delicious.

For those with a sweet tooth: we recommend the Panna Cotta ($8, below, background), a homemade double cream flan, with a milky, creamy texture. Topped with raspberry sauce, the slight tanginess gave a good balance to the sweetness of the dessert. The Tiramisu ($9.50, below, foreground) is another must-try homemade classic, where the light layers of cream and cake go extremely well together.

The establishment also sells a wide variety of products in its gourmet retail section: ingredients used in Spizza Mercato’s dishes, pre-packaged sauces and soups, cooking utensils, Italy’s diverse wines (with around 80 bottles made using 10 different grape varieties), Illy coffee, as well as Terre Ducali Parma Ham and Baratti & Milano Chocolates, that lend any homecooked meal an Italian touch.
