Where to Go for Affordable Omakase in Singapore
2014-06-02
Before we delve into where you can go for affordable Omakase in Singapore, here's why you should even go in the first place.
Omakase translates from Japanese to "I'll leave it up to you" in English, meaning you entrust the selection of dishes wholly to the chef. You'll never know what to expect, nor will you have the exact same dining experience twice when dining Omakase-style. The chef flaunts his innovative skills before you with the best seasonal produce cooked in a variety of ways; the meal akin to watching an artistic performance -- and that is the beauty of it. While Omakase is often associated with hefty price tags, especially in places like Aoki and Shinji where prices soar above the hundreds, we thank our lucky stars for these good and affordable alternatives. If you're less than willing to spend more than $100 on a 7-course meal or have been on Teppei's waiting list for a month and counting, it's time you check these out. Shinzo Japanese Cuisine

What to expect: In this intimate Japanese restaurant along Carpenter Street, friendly Hokkien banter is thrown back and forth between Chef Lawrence Chia and his regular customers, most of whom have been following him since his days in Hinoki. While we wouldn't say that the atmosphere is authentically Japanese, the food does come close. Signatures bouncing up your satisfaction levels include thinly sliced flounder lifted with truffle sauce - Hirame usuzukuri, and minced Japanese wagyu beef with sesame oil marinated somen, the latter truly bursting with umami. Price: Early Bird Special @ $68++ for 6 courses (6pm - 7.30pm) 17 Carpenter Street, #01-01, Singapore 059906. Tel.: 6438 2921. Sushi Kou

Opt for the $80 set for a more premium range of ingredients. It starts with an impressive sashimi moriawase with chunky slices of fatty tuna belly, as well as tender stingray in a rich sauce filling in the braised dish option. And if we may tempt you, the $100-Omakase set features an additional course of top-of-the-line grilled Kagoshima Wagyu Ribeye.
