Little does one expect that the brain behind an engineering role at Apple would also be the same one that spearheaded a completely unrelated venture that capitalizes on the other half of the brain, one that has brought you the homegrown fast food joint with 100% pure premium beef patties and fresh hotdogs,SuperDog, which has 4 outlets to date. This well utilized brain belongs to Edmund Koh, who has now embarked on another mission with Dessert Ministry: to cultivate a dessert culture here in Singapore, which we surprisingly lack compared to our China, Hong Kong, Taiwanese and Japanese counterparts, especially when we pride ourselves on being a food paradise.
What better way to realize his vision for building a dessert culture in Singapore than to hire a consultant from Guangzhou, to churn out desserts worthy of the increasingly picky taste-buds of Singaporeans? For those of you who have been refraining yourselves from desserts because you're on a diet, you have no more excuses my friend, because, as Edmund assures us, their desserts have low fat content. Careful thought has been put into more than 80 recipes of hot and cold desserts and drinks, from the names to presentation so as to appeal to the wide range of people patronizing their first outlet that opened in October 2010 at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard. There is something for everyone so let's take a peak. One of their signature desserts includes Daifuku ($3.50 for 2), which means "Good Luck" in Japanese. Four hours of sweat and soul is put into making this deceivingly simple looking dish, in order to churn out a smooth and thin skin texture from the high-grade Japanese flour which is then stuffed with with various fresh fruits like strawberries, mango, match and even D24 durian (Priced differently at $4.50 for 2 pcs) in high-grade Japanese flour. The Daifuku can also be purchased in a box of six as a gift for your dessert-loving friends and relatives.
For Mango lovers, the Mango Supreme ($8.80) will be your best bet. It is served with home-made premium mango ice-cream on a mango pudding base and an exotic mix of lemon jelly, honeydew, watermelon and pomelo in a sea of mango puree! Guilt-free indulgence!
There were also warm desserts that we at OpenRice.com personally adored, such as the bowl of Black Sesame Cream ($5.30), which is made from carefully selected black sesame, roasted and grind to perfection, and served with pan fried black sesame sticky rice balls coated with sugar and crushed peanuts. The Steam Egg White custard with Azuki Beans is also something to add to your list to try the next time you're down, because apart from being a healthier cousin of steamed egg custard with the use of only egg whites, it also melts in your mouth balancing the palate out with a layer of red bean paste underneath the steamed egg white.
On top of being a healthier choice, the drinks selection is also interesting and varied with different mixtures of fruits. They have the Red Date and Longan Tea ($5.50) which helps relieve stress for busy executives and also provides nourishment for sore throats which many of us are prone to if we're not careful in this perching heat and dryness of Singapore! They also have drinks that aid digestion, provides calcium, vitamins and antioxidants that your body needs!
