Earlier in April this year, OpenRice conducted a survey to find out what your favourite hawker delights were.
We found that 12% of you love your satay, 13% enjoy slurping up the goodness of laksa, 14% are fans of chilli crab (and messy eating!), 17% of you find comfort in hokkien mee, and a whopping 44% can’t get enough of the local classic – chicken rice!
We also found out that there are certain chicken rice stalls that continue to receive your love, even after all these years. Here are five of Singapore’s best chicken rice stalls, according to you.
1. Seng Heng Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice @ Bukit Timah Market & Food CentreThere always seems to be a long, snaking queue at Seng Heng, which has been around for almost 20 years now. No prizes for guessing why though! The chicken rice here is as sinful as it gets: oily, tender meat with fragrant rice and awesome chilli sauce. Go early if you’d like to try the chicken rice here, everything’s usually sold out by late afternoon.
2. Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice @ Balestier RoadThe name “Loy Kee” is synonymous with chicken rice. Everyone seems to know it, and everyone’s taste buds seem to be acquainted with Loy Kee’s chicken rice. One thing many agree on is that fact that Loy Kee’s chicken rice isn’t overly-oily and its roasted chicken is the stall’s main highlight.
3. Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice @ Alexandra Village Food CentreOne can spot this unique-looking stall from a mile away at Alexandra Village Food Centre. With a bright red sign and chicken heads hanging by hooks behind the stall’s window, Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice has been highly rated by media and locals alike. Savour the salty-sweet gravy the chicken’s swimming in – you’ll definitely love it!
4. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Maxwell Food CentreTian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is super famous. You only have the choice of steamed chicken here, and it is sooooo goooood. The dish isn't too oily, and the chicken meat is smooth. Know what's the secret? Well, apparently the chickens are fed grains like corn when alive, thus making the meat tastier than usual!
5. Heng Ji Chicken Rice @ Chinatown Complex Food CentreThe chicken rice at Heng Ji is such a hit with hawker food lovers. But aside from its fantastic chicken, the other star is actually the chilli sauce. Unlike most stalls which serve a garlic-y type, this stall’s unique because of its slightly sweet, dark red chilli sauce. Keep in mind that it only opens from 3pm till 9pm at night so if you intend to have it for lunch, be ready for a late lunch treat!
