Food Review: Dig In to Local Delights at White Rose Café
2013-06-25
When it comes to food, nothing really beats the local dishes we grew up loving. Just to name a few, we have the Fish Head Curry and Laksa. But over the years, as we’ve grown older, these familiar favourites seemed to have taken a backseat as we got introduced to a myriad of cuisines from around the world. That’s why it was such a breath of fresh air to see restaurants make an effort to re-introduce these to the newer generation.
White Rose Cafe promotes local fare with its Treasured Flavours of Singapore menu
One such restaurant is York Hotel’s White Rose Café. For the past 27 years, it has been holding the widely successful Penang Hawker Fare promotion thrice every year. During this period, the restaurant offers diners a chance to indulge in nothing else but Singaporean delights. This year, its culinary team has taken it up a notch by coming up with the Treasured Flavours of Singapore menu which features more than 20 true blue Singaporean dishes. The main highlights are the culinary creations which are inspired from the now defunct Soon Heng Restaurant. For those who are not familiar with this restaurant, this was a popular family destination which offered home-style local fare. The man who is responsible for bringing back this little piece of history is Executive Chef Charlie Tham, who actually started his career at the now defunct restaurant. Completing his dream team is Chef Jordan Liang who also came from Soon Heng.
Fish Head Curry
As for the food, the duo’s first must-try item is the Fish Head Curry ($28/Half; $42/Whole) which consists of steamed fish drenched in tamarind-based curry sauce; then it’s cooked together with tomatoes, lady fingers, sliced onions, and chilli. To balance the spiciness, it’s best consumed with a glass of Calamansi Plum Drink ($5)
Clockwise from left: Sambal King Prawn, Crab Masala, and Chicken Masala
At White Rose Café, there are more spicy foods to choose from: the Crab Masala ($32), Sambal King Prawn ($8/pc), and Chicken Masala ($12). Each bite from any of these dishes gives that spicy kick which just lingers on your taste buds. So, you may need another glass of that Calamansi drink.
Black Ink Sotong
Other notable mentions are the Black Ink Sotong ($12), Deep-fried Curry Chicken Wings ($8), Chap Chye ($8), and Sambal Kang Kong ($8). The chefs at White Rose Café understand that not a lot of people can take too much spice in their dishes. And so, they encourage customers to let them know the spiciness level that they can take. The dishes from the Treasured Flavours of Singapore menu are available for dine-in and takeaway. For customers who want to indulge in these offerings, they are required to call 6830 1156 one day in advance for their orders.
