Italian Delights at Trattoria Gallo D'Oro
2012-04-17
There’s a new eatery in town, foodies! Trattoria Gallo D’Oro boasts a cosy, intimate setting for you to dig into wholesome Italian food. Nestled right in the heart of the old Central Mall along Magazine Road, the casual Italian eatery features Chef Carlo’s delectable hometown dishes from Bergamo.
Kick things off with the must-try Burratina di bufala con pomodorini ($18) – fresh buffalo Burratina cheese with juicy sliced tomatoes, basil and ‘first pressed’ organic extra virgin olive oil. Firm on the outside and creamy on the inside, the cheese is light and has a very mellow taste. Plus it goes great with the complimentary serving of ciabatta bread!
Carnivores will enjoy the appetiser, Tagliere de affettati misti Emiliani ($22) as well. The generous portions of tasty, authentic Emilia Romagna cold cuts are guaranteed to satisfy the meat-eater in you. One food note: the Burratina di bufala con pomodorini adds a unique twist to the meats!
Sardine fritte ($25) is served as a main course, but you may also want to consider it as an appetiser. Deep fried to crunchy perfection, the sardines are an alternative to common appetisers so this one’s for you if you’re craving for something different.
The pastas are a real hit at Trattoria Gallo D’Oro, but a personal recommendation would be the Casonsei alla Bergamasca ($20) – stuffed veal ravioli served with golden butter, crispy bacon and sage. The combination of the savoury bacon and the earthy sage adds a nice finishing touch to the delicacy of the ravioli.
On the other hand if you’d like something simple yet satisfying, choose Foiade del Gallo D’Oro ($20). The homemade pappardelle pasta with spinach and sausage makes for great comfort food.
And what’s a meal without dessert? There’s something for everyone on the menu, like vanilla ice cream with espresso (Affogato al Caffe – $10), strawberry panna cotta cream pudding (Panna cotta con fragole – $10), Italian cheeses served with honey (Carrello di formaggi Italiani – $20)… but for the Chef’s Recommendation, try Torta della Nonna con gelato ($10). The recipe for this custard cake with vanilla gelato actually belonged to Chef Carlo’s grandmother, and the addition of lemon adds a sharp zest to this sweet, buttery treat.
