O'ma Spoon: From Rice Cakes to Cheesecakes

If too many pictures of Bingsu and thick toasts have been popping up on your Instagram feed lately, you know what to do! Join in the craze with O’ma Spoon, who has recently opened their second outlet in the “capital” of our island, the accessible 313@Somerset along Orchard Road.
o'ma spoon strawberry choco thick toast
Owned by Korean Chris Chun, this dessert café aims to import the booming Bingsu culture from its founder’s homeland. And import they do – their Signature Oven-Baked Honey Bread is baked in Korea, and then painstakingly flown in to meet stringent taste requirements. One of the more popular variations of this item is the Choco Strawberry Honey Butter Bread($14.90). The 2-inch thick toast has a spread of Nutella topped with strawberries, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream on the side. While its components are common, it combines well with the sweetened honey-baked toast to make a sum bigger than its parts.
o'ma spoon injeolmi toast
If you don’t feel like sawing through so much bread, hop over to their Oven-Baked Toast series. While the Injeolmi Toast ($8.90) may not be as photogenic as its colourful cousin, it certainly doesn’t fall behind on the satisfaction spectrum. Sandwiched between slices of toast are Injeolmi rice cakes, providing an unexpectedly chewy mouthfeel.
o'ma spoon mango cheesecake bingsu
Another hot item is their Mango Cheesecake Bingsu ($18.90), which has a shaved milk ice base topped with mangoes, cranberries, New York style cheesecake, vanilla ice cream and almond flakes. The mangos, although impressive in quantity, have not quite reached their optimum ripeness. Nonetheless, the dessert was enjoyable on the whole, especially when the creamier texture of the cheesecake was involved (which we wouldn’t mind a bigger piece of!).

Naturally, we had to try the traditionally flavoured Injeolmi Bingsu ($12.90) as well. Its exterior of toasted Injeolmi powder blends well with the milk ice, creating a harmonious melt of both sweet and savoury. An abundance of injeolmi rice cakes (similar to our local muah chee), cashew nuts, and almond flakes complete the commendable dessert. But before you rush down to O’ma Spoon, take a moment to participate in their on-going rhyme contest on Instagram - they’re giving away a pair of tickets to Big Bang’s concert on 18 July to complete your Korean experience!
