Recently, OpenRice indulged in a luxury feast of fresh seafood and fancy cocktails aptly named the 7 desirable sins, whose taste is as pretty as it looks and sounds, a perfect complement to slipping away into a dreamy sunset evening by the beach.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, such a life does exist in Singapore, though it comes with a hefty price tag, and justifiably so, which we will get to in just a bit. This atmosphere of bliss is created by none other than 1 Rochester Group's COAST @ 1-TwentySix, a chic restaurant in East Coast Park.
COAST @ 1-TwentySix welcomed everyone with 7 playful cocktails, each one from a category of sin, meticulously prepared by their house mixologists, KiKi and Ivan Fernandez, both of whom are truly cocktail connoisseurs by their own right.
From left, you have Alexander's Well, a gin cocktail of greed, mulled, shaken and drained with poached pear and sprig rosemary, and its main alcoholic ingredients being Tanqueray Gin, freshly squeezed wine and St Germain elderflowers, which is as smooth as silk and have hints of cinnamon and spice.
Alexander's Well is followed by Antoinette's Vanity, so named after the controversial late queen of France, the only cocktail out of the 7 that was paired with cute little cupcakes, and wonderfully so. Based on the former Queen of France’s penchant for sweets, Antoinette's Vanity contains passion fruit vodka, pear, grapefruit, green tea, vanilla and comes with a freshly made cupcake, which complements the delicately sweet yet refreshing taste of the cocktail.
See the opaque orange-pink drink with the pineapple foam on the top? Now that's The Screaming Banshee, an award-winning cocktail that eludes an interesting spiciness from the chili padi.
The Dragon's Breath, is up next with all it pinky glory and its crown of grapefruit proudly seating on its head. It tastes like red bean ice cream which I suspect was a result of the coconut milk, vanilla and hazelnuts. I wonder why it is under the category of wrath. Pink isn't exactly wrathful, neither is its taste.
Turns out that this fiery-red cocktail is made from exotic fruits such as dragon fruit, blood orange and other seasonal fruits usually eaten as desserts. This fiery-red cocktail is a heady concoction of spiced rum, dragon fruit, Frangelico hazelnut, vanilla and coconut cream. Guaranteed to be a hit with the ladies for its vibrant hue and robust taste, it is akin to an exotic fruit milkshake.
Next to Dragon's Breath is The Younger Man, a brandy cocktail of envy, and envy it is, for if I could award the crown of uniqueness in presentation of a cocktail, The Younger Man would be it. It looks like it just hopped out of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a magical but deadly potion of sorts, especially with the red balls that is filled with poison, created by the deceivingly beautiful witch herself. For consumption, just pour the blue stuff into the orange stuff and mix it up before consuming (see, told you it is like a magic potion!)
Next up in the champagne glass is Slow Rush, an oxymoron of sorts. Made lovingly from Moet Brut, 42 below, fresh peach and peach schnapps. Though a tad bitter, this cocktail has a refreshing aftertaste all thanks to the peaches.
Finally followed by Adam and Eve (no prizes for guessing why it is named as so). See the burnt brown thing? That's a preserved apple and it definitely looks a lot like the forbidden fruit of sin consumed by Adam and Eve. Out of all the cocktails, I'd say this one tastes most like alcohol.
Out of the 7 Desirable Sins by COAST @ 1-TwentySix, I strongly recommend the Dragon's Breath, because, and don't judge me, it is pink! And like I said, it tastes like red bean ice cream, comprising of my favourite ingredients of spiced rum, vanilla, coconut milk, Frangelico Hazelnut blended with lots of ice! Imagine the calories though. Definitely a sinful drink yet like all quality alcohol, you don't get sick or drunk easily, but a pretty nice sensation that kicks off the transition from after-work evening to nighttime chill-out.
Don’t you love learning about the story of different drinks and dishes? It's always great to know that the stuff I'm consuming has been carefully thought-out by its creator. If you like this article, be sure to stay with us at OpenRice for more exciting food happenings in town.
