Introduction
Osaka Ohsho is the destination for handmade gyoza (meat dumplings) that have been skilfully pan-fried to be deliciously crisp on one side yet tantalisingly moist within. The filling is made with a combination of tender pork shoulder and leg cuts as well as cabbage, garlic and giner. Chuka cuisine in Japan typically showcases well-known braised and stir-fried Chinese dishes enjoyed with Japanese rice. Customers can tuck into a good range of 'Chuka' specialities served a la carte and as part of a set. continue reading

I happened to chance by this restaurant and saw a huge signboard advertising this as the no.1 gyoza specialist in Japan. I was attracted by the signboard and decide to have my lunch with my colleagues there. I ordered the Fuwatoro Chicken Tenshin Han and gyoza set, which comes with 6 pieces of gyoza. The dish looks like a very large egg dome as seen. The taste however, is really great. The egg is very fluffy and moist and airy and it is really flavourful. The rice hidden inside the egg is also tasty as the broth is quite rich and the rice had soaked up the flavours of the broth easily. The egg is really the star as it is just so tasty, unknowingly, I ate everything up in no time. It is actually very filling as there is a lot of rice, and I left some of the rice untouched because I still had the gyoza. To me, I felt the gyoza was just normal though. If I were to come back, it would definitely be for the fluffy egg rice! continue reading

Have heard about Osaka Ohsho several times because of its popularity in Osaka, Japan. The name itself translates to "The King of Gyoza in Osaka" and because of that, I've been waiting for a chance to try it ever since it opened its doors in Singapore. There are currently two outlets in Singapore, one at Raffles City and the other one which I've went at Bukit Panjang Plaza. I tend to try out new dining places at really off-peak hours around 3-4pm just to avoid the crowd, which explains the almost empty place. I do this because it actually helps me to test out the restaurant's true product and service performance and potential. The young male waiter who served my buddy and I was really friendly and pleasant, he was able to answer my questions because some items on the menu are based in Japanese romanji style, and I needed to know the ingredients. I got myself this Chicken Tenshin Han & Gyoza ($13.90), the chicken actually refers to the chicken bits in the omurice. But seriously this omurice tasted amazing! They are not certainly not stingy in their eggs as it's probably made out of several beaten eggs that created the fluffy soft and smooth omelette. The rice used was also of top quality and the overall dish was topped with thick gravy that boost the flavour of everything else. The gyoza that comes with it were by far the best I've tried in Singapore so far! Before this, I was on the lookout for the best gyoza around the country and I'm so glad I've found it! It's actually handmade with generous but optimal filling of cabbage, ginger, garlic and 3 different kinds of pork wrapped in their special wonton paper. The grilled gyoza have no hint of oiliness to it and tasted great with the black vinegar. The ala carte price for 6pc was also relatively cheap at $3.90 and 12pc at $7.80. The addictive nature may have you ordering more for takeaways so you may want to order the 12pc one at all times! My buddy ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Set ($14.90) which comes with 3pc gyoza. Gyoza aside, the teriyaki chicken was cooked nicely on hot sizzling plate. The soy sauce glaze tasted fine but there's nothing that special. But that's okay because they're known for their gyoza anyway. Have also ordered their Fried Ika Gesu ($7.90), which is basically fried squid legs, I guess my buddy's on the hunt for the best fried squid legs and he didn't think this was great for its price. Although it tasted fresh and probably deep fried with new chaned oil, it is still considered overpriced for that small portion. So anyway we got the bill and I think it's a pretty reasonable amount for a casual dining Japanese restaurant with lovely ambience and irresistible gyoza.Overall, I would definitely visit again to this gyoza specialist! There may be hits and misses to look out for and hopefully this review may help in your future experience here! continue reading

I was feeling really hungry one day and craving for gyoza, i decided to drop by Osaka Ohsho, the restaurant that claims to be the 'King of Gyoza in Osaka'. I ordered the fried rice set that comes with 6 gyoza. My first bite into the gyoza convinced me that they do live up to their name. The dumpling skin was very thin and is crispy on the pan-fried side and soft on the other. The filling was very juicy with the vegetables and meat finely diced, allowing the texture and flavour to be very uniform and well-balance. I simply love it!Using premium pearl rice, the fried rice was also fabulous! The plump rice grains was well fried with fragrant egg and their Japanese Char Siew meat. Added with spring onions, this was a homely and simple dish that no doubt brings comfort and warmth.I need more gyoza now! continue reading

Yet another Japanese dining outlet to invade Bukit Panjang Plaza - alongside Ichiban Boshi, Bishamon, Sushi Deli etc... However, the quality of food was really mediocre and to be honest, I would very much prefer Long John Silver's (the former tenant) to stay! Charshu Raman with Gyoza Set ($11.90++)The Raman was nowhere comparable to Bishamon's offerings! The soup base was rather blend and the charshu slices lacked the fragrance and texture essential of any decent Raman. The noodles were pretty unimpressionable as well. As for the Gyozas, which were supposedly a signature must-try and star dish of the outlet, it was utterly disappointing. Over-burnt, small, and lacking moisture in the meat fillings, I really do not see any special about it! The only saving grace was the special ponzu sauce dipping which added some zest to the otherwise plain tasting gyozas. Not an outlet I would patronise often unless there's some special promotions in store! continue reading

Hitched a ride from colleague back to Jurong & then I took a bus to Bukit Panjang. Not sure what to have for dinner, I decided to try it out at Osaka Ohsho, which is a new addition at Bukit Panjang replacing Long John SilverI ordered the Ramen + Gyoza Set $11.90. Bowl of Ramen doesn't have much of ingredients, only 2 slices of pork & half an egg, but Ramen is springy & the broth is sweet. Gyoza is a mixture of cabbage, ginger, garlic and of pork, grilled to a deliciously golden brown crisp on one side yet moist within. Unlike typical Chinese 锅贴, here they only have soy sauce for the dumpling. No sliced gingers. continue reading
