This place is quite small and can only seat a few customers. However, it is prettily decorated in baby blue and pink with peranakan-like motifs. I've noticed this place for a while and thus wanted to give it a try. Me and my dining companion ordered the executive set lunch A ($14.50++) each, and topped up $2++ for a drink too.The place looked understaffed when we arrived at around 12.15 pm. There was only one chef inside who also had to take orders. We waited a while before a second staff who just came in (she looked as if she's just starting her shift) took our order. We wanted to order their special stew and was disappointed to be informed that they have ran out of the item. Isn't it a bit early? Anyway, we then tried to order the babi pongteh and was told it was not available too, for the day! In the end, we settled for the satay bohong and the nyonya tau yu bak instead. My companion had limited choices since he does not take much spicy food.- Satay Bohong with sayor lodeh and mango kerabu saladI think the use of satay is misleading, as the marinade for the pork slices did not taste satay-like at all. It was a midly spicy marinade which was not too bad in taste. The vegetables in the sayor lodeh were too tough, especially the cabbage which was not cooked long enough. The mango kerabu salad was also very sour. I tried my best to eat off most of it, but my dining companion could not take more than one bite of it.- Nyonya Tau Yu Bak with nyonya chap chye and mango kerabu saladMy companion's set came wrongly with sayor lodeh initially, but was changed to the correct chap chye when I pointed it out to the staff. The nyonya tau yu bak and the chap chye tasted ordinary and were more like chinese dishes than nyonya dishes. - Pulot Hitam with dried longans (our dessert)The pulot hitam fared better. However, I feel that dried longans do not need to be added into this dessert, as they were too sweet. The lemon grass drinks were also dilute and not very nice too.Overall, I'm kinda disappointed with the food offered here. Perhaps ordering from their ala carte dishes will be a better choice? continue reading

Baba Wins' is a small, unassuming restaurant that is hidden at a small corner in the shopping mall, The Star Vista. I was pleasantly surprised by its good food and sincere service. Here is what we ordered: Chinchalok Omelette - $8: Seriously, if you ask me to eat chinchalok alone, I'd rather die than eat it because I find the taste pretty weird. I was very skeptical on how this dish will turn out as previously I already had a phobia of the chinchalok smell and taste. However, this dish turn out pretty well and I quite like it as the egg is very soft, there isn't strong taste of the chinchalok but yet you know it is chinchalok la.Assam Fish w Lady's Finger - $10.50: This is the dish I actually have cravings for. I wanted to eat something sour and spicy lol. But I was a little disappointed with the fish that they used. Maybe if they'd use batang fish, this dish will taste differently or maybe this is the original Peranakan dish. The assam soup is really appetizing to go with rice.Kang Kong - $8: The chef is pretty nice to come and explain that the red chilli is actually for decorations and is not spicy at all (because previously I asked if the sambal kangkong will be very spicy) Additional items on the receipt include Rice - $2 and Lemongrass Drink - $3. I appreciate the very sincere service staff comprising of only the waitress and chef. The chef came out of the kitchen to serve us the food while the waitress was taking order from other table before returning to the kitchen to cook. The place is rather small that sits less than 30 pax at the same time. The dishes on the menu is limited but I guess you only need a few good ones to get returning customers. The price is also reasonable. Will I come again? Yes, and I intend to bring my parents too!For full review and more photos, please visit http://princessmic80.blogspot.sg/2013/07/of-taste-of-peranakan-cuisine-baba-wins.html continue reading
