The presentation is so-so not expecting much since it's rather common and the pic on the menu ain't too impressive. But boy... was I blown away.. I must admit.. I haven eaten great japanese grill todate so am not excited over this dish. The moment you place 1 of these little jewels in your mouth.. THe charred flavour just overwhelms the whole oral cavity!!! And the chicken is soooo tender and JUICY!!!! - NOT FATS! I wouldn't have expected the meat to be this tender and juicy given the amount of smoky goodness it has.
Wow.. a must try!

After my first visit to Ootoya @ Orchard Central a couple of years, I decided to try Ootoya @ Changi City Point, when my colleague and I headed for lunch the other day. Ootoya Japanese restaurant is known to serve authentic home-cooked Japanese food, and that sets it apart from the usual "don", "ramen", "sashimi" or "BBQ" Japanese restaurants we often frequent. We had the Set Lunch, hence came with a Chawanmushi each - I loved the flavorful chawanmushi that came with 3 tiny oysters inside instead

We had the Set Lunch, hence came with a Chawanmushi each - I loved the flavorful chawanmushi that came with 3 tiny oysters inside instead of the usual chicken or crabstick! Even my colleague mentioned that the chawanmushi should have been steamed in a quality stock.

I had the Zousui (SGD17.50) - wild grain porridge cooked with oysters, shiitake mushrooms, carrots, lady-fingers, leeks etc, all cooked in soy milk! I added the side bowl of seaweed into it. A delicious dish with nutritious ingredients and bursting with flavors. I could get used to eating this everyday.

At Changi City Point, I decided to try out another Japanese food craving option apart from Ajisen Ramen. Ootoya is a quiet place and usually don't have much of a queue as compared to the other restaurants. Service : The staff are very friendly helpful. We ordered the Udon and Grilled Chicken Don. Overall, I felt the udon was a little plain and the grilled chicken (although tender) but it's simply "japanese chicken rice". Will try other dishes on my next visit.

Spent about $20 for this meal.

Ootoya is an established chain in Japan and has a few outlets in Singapore. The service here could have been much better; we had to constantly ask the waitresses to fill up water. But that could be attributed to the busy period where they looked understaffed. The chawanmushi was mediocre unfortunately. It was too soft and had not much taste in it. It is better to order only one set and utilise the free refill of rice for others.

I was looking for something to eat in Changi City Point and Ootoya was the one of the restaurants without a queue so I settled for it. I chose the grilled chicken rice bowl - comes with a few pieces of grilled chicken in bbq sauce which was very tasty, and some lettuce. Chicken was well seasoned and the skin crispy and flavouful, however, portion was too little. The whole set costs $14.50 and comes with chawanmushi, which was average.

This grill beef set at $24 is totally worth it. Rice covered with slight charred beef chunks, meat was juicy and tender at each bite! Comes with chawanmushi and REFILLABLE miso soup. It's not those miserable miso soup with seaweed and a few tiny cubes of tofu. As you can at the picture, the soup is full of generous ingredients, chicken meat and assorted vegetables! We had asked for 2 refills! Consider a MUST ORDER at this restaurant.
