We went to try their ala cart lunch buffet at Hougang branch. As they do not accept reservations, we decided to reach the restaurant at around 11.30am hoping to avoid the crowd & queue. Our family love their singature Samsui ginger chicken. The meat is so tender & moist, when paired with their homemade ginger sauce, the taste is just heavenly. However, I found that this time their ginger bits were very coarse compared to what we had previously. Black pepper salmon is our favourite dish. The salmon were fried till crispy, cooked with onions & black pepper. Olive rice is very yummy on its own. Side dishes like fried chicken & prawns are very crispy & yummy. Sotong is very chewy & soft. Steamed minced meat with chestnut is pretty good as the chestnut bits add texture to the whole dish =) Both my hubby & I love their Chai Po egg, fried till crispy at the sides & the saltiness of the Chai po is just right. However, we found that the restaurant standard had dropped. Probably because the buffet is cheap, so people were not complaining much? The restaurant is short handed & we need to wait for sometime for the staff to take orders & serve food. We waited for our olive rice for a long time but it was served to other table customers who arrived even later than us. Most dishes served were not hot. Also, not sure why their salted eggs looked a bit weird (not fresh?), is dry & blackish in colour. Our next table customers even told the server to change the salted eggs. There were supposed to have some roast meat inside the claypot tofu, however, we could only find tofu in the claypot this round.   On the whole, the food still taste good. continue reading

One of the must order dishes when you visit Soup Restaurant is their Samsui Ginger Chicken ($16.90+ for small portion). We tried to ask if we could select the type of chicken meat served (e.g. no breast meat) but the waitress kindly explained that a portion is almost equivalent to half a chicken so every dish comes with a fixed proportion of chicken meat from various parts. The chicken is absolutely tender and the fats wedged between the meat and skin literally melts in your mouth. This is one instance where I do not remove the chicken skin and enjoy the dish in its entirety, forgetting the calories and fats for a little bit. Another plus point- the chicken meat is boneless, so less messy eating. The ginger sauce provided is also excellent- it comes in chopped ginger pieces drenched in oil, which makes the sauce so fragrant and matches so well with the chicken pieces. The dish also comes with fresh crunchy lettuce pieces- I personally like to roll the chicken and ginger sauce in lettuce and eat it like a sandwich! continue reading

The Soup Restaurant is really nice place to eat Chinese food. Mrupupup really enjoyed their signature dish - samsui ginger chicken (attached photo), really nice! Mrupupup ordered the 3 persons set although there were four people (which was enough for us). The Soup Restaurant is located at the 2nd floor of Hougang Mall. Soup Restaurant has many outlets in Singapore. The dinner set included samsui ginger chicken, olive rice, beancurd in a claypot, lotus root with pork ribs soup, minced meat with egg yolk steamed and stir fried potato leaves. The samsui chicken comes with fresh lettuce for a good healthy meal. The service at Soup Restaurant was good and fast. Yummzz! continue reading

The Soup Restaurant is one of my top choices as the place to get good ol' comforting Chinese dishes. I'm sure many others feel the same way too as it was rather crowded on a late Tuesday evening. Once we sat down, we ordered our chrysanthemum tea and usual favourites:This is a must order for me whenever I dine at Soup Restaurant. Boneless chicken, crunchy cold lettuce and the star of the dish, the ginger sauce, all together makes this dish such a great start to the meal. Pity I can't have thigh meat for all the pieces of chicken!I love how the tofu skin is thin and crisp while the insides remain soft and silky. Best eaten with the generous topping of coriander and spring onions and crunchy salty bits which till today, I still can't quite make out what they are. The gravy was a tad bit salty but mellowed out nicely with the tofu and of course, a bowl of white rice. We choose the spicy version and were not disappointed. It came piping hot which is always appreciated. Quite a generous portion too, would have easily fed three persons. Definitely another enjoyable meal at Soup Restaurant.(: continue reading
