Tucked away near a church on Queen Street, I never would have found Mary's Kafe if not for a recommendation from a friend who worked in the area. Mary's is only open for lunch on weekdays, and specializes in home-style Eurasian cuisine. The cafe space is clean and cozy with air-con, maybe a dozen tables, and smiling ladies behind the counter. The cafe space is clean and cozy with air-con, maybe a dozen tables, and smiling ladies behind the counter. For $7 you get your choice of main course plus veggie, rice, dessert, and a drink. I chose the chicken curry which was good but not the best I've ever had (too much oil, not enough spice), but I really enjoyed the little piece of cake that came for dessert. I have no idea what it was, but it had a nice texture (coconut?).
I also ordered a plate of kueh pie tee since I had never tried this Peranakan specialty before. I really liked them - crunchy, sour, sweet - lots of flavor in one little cup.
Mary's is only open on weekdays for lunch, so if you're near the Singapore Art Museum check it out
