After McDonald's Japanese offering with the Ebi Burger, we now have KFC catering to Korean food lovers with their new seasonal Spicy Korean Craze burger and chicken. Naturally, being a fan of all things Korean, I couldn't resist giving this a try. We went on a weekday for dinner and the place was pretty crowded, but we managed to grab a seat so we could enjoy our dinner at the fast food outlet instead of taking away our food. We got the Spicy Korean Box which came with the Spicy Korean Burger, one Spicy Korean Crunch, a cup of Lemonade and Mashed Potato. You can also add $1.00 to "upsize" the Mashed Potato to their Spicy Korean Shaker Fries. As we have not tried their newly revamped French Fries before, we took the chance to upsize our meal as well.
Spicy Korean Box: Spicy Korean Burger + Spicy Korean Crunch + Korean Shaker Fries + Lemonade (Upsized $9.80)
Mentioned "Spicy Korean" food and admittedly, the first thing I think of is Kimchi. I was kind of expecting the food to be either really very spicy or had a hint of kimchi to it. However, the Spicy Korean Burger was basically Zinger burger but with the additional "Korean" sauce, which wasn't all that spicy despite the name. It was more sweet than spicy, perhaps due to the presence of the mayonnaise. We both thought that the burger needed more sauce on it for the extra flavour. The zinger chicken though, was crispy and crunchy and yet still tender on the inside.
This fared much better than the burger. The crispy chicken was glazed with yet another sweet and spicy Korean sauce and then sprinkled with sesame seed. It was noticeably sweeter and spicier than the burger. Despite the glaze of the sauce, the chicken still maintained its crunchiness. Yummy!
The new fries were slightly more thicker and crunchier than their previous offering, which I supposed was an improvement, although I preferred their previous fries to dip and eat with my mashed potato. The seasoning for the shaker fries was not spicy at all, like we expected, but had a slight tinge of sourness to it, which I thought was a little like kimchi. We agreed that this was quite okay although I found that I personally preferred the fries better plain.
The lemonade was a good choice of drink to include with the meal as it was very refreshing and helped to cool our tongues after all that spices!
Not many people (at least among my friends) seemed to know that KFC is also offering Chocolate Cake for the reasonable price $2.00. I myself only found out when browsing their website, so I just had to get this cake to try. This cake totally fell short of expectations. The website showed a cake with a lava core, but the one I got did not have any Chocolate inside. Not sure if the cake was supposed to be just a plain cake contrary to what was advertised on the website, or if the staff way overheated it resulting in the lack of lava core. It was also kind of small (though kind of expected given the price) and was more like a chocolate muffin instead. Sorely disappointing considering that this packed over 300 calories for such a small size!
Overall, I'd recommend sticking to what KFC are famous for - their fried chicken. If you are interested in being part of KFC's "Spicy Korean Craze", then the Spicy Chicken Crunch seemed to be a safer bet for its taste, at least it was for our case. The entire set, at nearly $10.00 (not including cake), was rather steep in our opinion for a fast food set, especially since the entire meal seemed to be based off existing food on the menu like the zinger burger.
