Simple, warm place with friends @ Kkongdon
Kkongdon Barbeque
2013-10-18
I have try Korean BBQ before but Kkongdon was the first time. This Korean modern BBQ with their simple decor was not the usual buffet that was expected. You have to buy the set meal which cost $20++. However the side dish are free flow.I ordered a set with is a Combe of black pepper beef and pork. The beef was well marinated but a little too spicy for me but the pork was one of the good. What I like about this place was that the service crew was attentive to the Customer. They will from time to time serve water to us as they know  I was not used to the spicy beef. Other than the set ordered. We are also served with Korean rice cake and bean paste soup. The Korean rice cake was good and we even try it on grill.  As for the soup, spicy but tasty. Overall the place is good for a group outing as it is in a clubhouse. I would recommend it after spending times after activities and have a wholesome meal in this joint.…Read More

Fast filling lunch
Jamboree Bar & Cafe
2013-07-11
Jamboree Bar is nestled on the 2nd floor of Orchard Towers. Country music lovers would be pleased to hear old school country music from the likes of Johnny Cash and George Strait. I spent my lunch here as it is near my office one afternoon.I haven't tried many things on the menu, but the classic fish and chip. My co-worker order something else from the set lunch - club sandwich, chicken chop, although I secretly think most of them forced themselves to order only because our boss bring us to this place, LOL! Prices are on the high side, food is average. The Café is always clean and neatly organized. Customer service really depends on who is working. About the food, the cod fish n chips was soggy and the fries equally so. The layers between the breading and the fish would have been a little less mushy. You could get a better fish n chips at a hawker center. If one has a hankerin' for some pretty traditional fish 'n chips, i wont recommend here but on a plus side. It makes for a fast, filling lunch and 1 point up for deco.…Read More

peranakan at the edge of singapore
Gd O'Times
2013-07-01
A cosy place for a good authentic Peranakan family dinner. This is definitely value for money in term of price. I like the beef rendang and the Chap Chye. Try also the curry fish. Foods are not too spicy. The place can be crowded, so making reservation will help. It can be frustrating just trying to park your car unless you don't mind taking a taxi.Must-try dishes include:Mixed Veg in ClaypotChicken in Candle nutFried whole Fish with chilli pasteDuck soup with sour veggy.Must try the dessert too :BoBo ChaCharGula MelakaGreat place, great food, great company. Customer Service is good, even if they are short-handed, they try to serve with a smile.…Read More

A cup of coffee at the edge of singapore
Chock Full Of Beans
2013-07-01
There is both seating indoors and outdoors, and parking is ample next door. The only problem is the far flung location in the east of Singapore.it give us a feeling of escaping the crowd in a relaxed cafe atmosphere. My friends and I are a little enthusiastic about coffee. We tried their flat white, it had a flat bold bitter taste. The buttermilk waffles served with mangoes on top had a dry texture to it. It was kinda chewy, my friend didn't like it but I was ok with it.I ordered the Swiss breakfast that comes with sauté mushrooms served on rosti with 2 cheese sausages and scrambled eggs. The mushrooms had a slightly burned taste, rosti was bland but it went well with the sausages splashed with a little sour cream. The eggs were nice, moist and fluffy. I enjoyed this dish. Then again we didn't really specify. The ice chocolate was delicious.Atmosphere was pleasant and the staff were all pretty nice.…Read More

Decent western in yishun
Western Food - Yishun 81 Foodcourt
2013-06-25
Tucked in the midst of suburban Singapore in the Yishun district. The food is excellent & reasonably priced. The pepper steak is delicious and the serving size is very generous. The crispy chicken is also excellent but a little small for those with a big appetite. Service and ordering is fast, efficient and friendly. All in all, a good meal for a reasonable price. The food is not out-of-the-world amazing but definitely decent. Will be back.…Read More

standard dropping
Hougang Ming Ji Roasted Meat
2013-06-25
I used to frequent this hawker center stall. It was really good. After a long period of absence was hoping to experience the nostalgic taste of Ming Ji's duck rice. To my disappointment, the standard has dropped. The rice was hard and the meat was stiff. If this is thenew standard, I doubt it will be able to survive the keen competition at Whampoa Hawker Centre. Other popular stalls, eg. the Hoover, are still excellent. The duck here is actually not enjoyable. The meat was dry and hard and the unique, sweet vinegar chilli that used to be the perfect accompaniment for the duck was gone. It was actually quite shocking! 0.5/5 for me …Read More

over exposed nasi lemak
Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak
2013-06-07
I'm going to write this review without excessive philosophizing, ranting or use of the "I" word. There will be no lengthy back story. I wouldn't be saying anything new anyway, since Selera Rasa has been on TV, blogged about and reviewed. Little wonder why, since this is arguably Singapore's best nasi lemak.Imagine a simple 3 ingredient high. The rich fragrance of basmati rice simmered and steamed in coconut milk and pandan leaves, the abrupt spicy heat of a sweet chili pepper coulis, and the savory comfort of a curry-fried chicken wing. There are other condiments, a fried egg, cucumber slices and ikan bills, the ubiquitous accompaniment to any self-respecting nasi lemak, but your brain is past caring about these other players on the plate and your eyes struggle to focus on what it is exactly that you've put in your mouth that still has you reeling. It's the triumvirate of chili, rice and curried chicken wing....trust me.I'd like to think I know a thing or two about nasi lemak, having had it just about every Saturday for tea since I was knee high to a cicak. So I think I speak with some personal authority on the matter of whether Selera Rasa is a worthy nasi lemak hall-of-famer. I think it is. I also think that Selera Rasa is a victim of it's own fame. All the media coverage creates unrealistic expectations in diners who flock here only to be disappointed when angels don't appear and next week's 4D numbers fail to materialize in the basmati. Don't expect too much, come with an open mind and set your senses free to explore and you will come away satisfied, if not pleasant surprised. It really is just honest to goodness solid quotidian fare. Look beyond the bull-@$!# that's been piled on these guys by the media and see it for the single specialty master hawker stall that it is and you'll see what all the fuss is about. It's just a local stall that serves good honest nasi lemak. No gimmicks. No fancy service. Just think of all the superlatives that pepper reviews of the latest French restaurant, Italian joint or Spanish tapas place; why don't those same superlatives apply here? Based on flavor alone, I see no reasonable explanation why not...unless it's the bull-@#$% these places are throwing in your eyes.Get real, get local, hug your local hawker today and tell him or her that you deserve better.…Read More

normal duck rice that going to close
Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House
2013-05-30
I am convinced that the line has doubled, or tripled, since the article came out in the papers about this establishment closing in June. Okay, I don't know this for a fact myself, but my parents love this place (we're Teochew) and they come here now and then, apparently at off-peak hours to avoid crowds. We were here on Sat 2pm+ but there were still tons of people!Be warned, there are two separate lines, 1 for takeout and 1 for sitting in (go in and find yourself a seat!) We didn't realize there were two lines until a nice lady told us so.Food came pretty promptly. Oh, lime juice was kind of sweet, had to ask for extra ice.Lovely tender duck (actually, I think I've had just as tender duck at Western places, but that was confit and certainly not for less than $10). Mom avers that this is the most tender duck you can find anywhere! It was pretty good, but I actually didn't find it amazing.. Nice comfort food I guess. Yummy soft rice too :)Sambal kangkong was delicious!! I love the hae bee (shrimp paste) and chilli. Also came with this somewhat cornstarchy tofu dish, which I found to be meh. I like soft tofu, but there was a bit too much cornstarch in the sauce.Apparently this is standard fare for 3 people, and cost $28 or so . Cheap delicious meal! Pity they're closing..…Read More

normal chicken rice
Hainanese Delicacy
2013-05-30
When I decided to write this review, I realised with a start that I have been patronising this stall since I was 12! It was one of the places my friends and I would end up having our meals after school before proceeding to while away our youth in the shopping complexes in town, doing nothing in particular. This is probably not going to be the tastiest chicken rice but that's exactly what I like about it. The chicken is always tender and doused with a good scoopful of light broth and the rice is always fragrant. You won't get that guilty feeling you often do after a plate of chicken rice elsewhere. The chilli also hits the right spot with a good level of spiciness and taste. Also, don't forget to give the duck soup with salted vegetables a go.I will probably come by at off-peak hours because it tends to get crowded but it also is an experience in itself to drop by at the stall's busiest period. You will probably find yourself huddled around the same table as a couple of strangers, gobbling down your meal - there is definitely a certain charm to that.…Read More

Dim Sum
2013-05-21
Love this stall! I love that it's a small little corner store - and though they don't sell full meals like the other stalls - they do provide some really yummy options - but their stuff sells fast!!! They have burgers, sandwiches, Taiwanese Pork Sausage, other little eats like - fish balls, chicken nuggets, and Dim Sum options like Siew Mai and all the different Paus. What I Love: The aunties here are really sweet and friendly. Apart from the service - which is great - they sell great, great, great porridge! There's chicken and pork - and it's really traditional porridge. They also have great dessert porridges - Tau Suan, Pulot Hitam and Bubur Terigu - my fave, fave, fave, fave, fave! It's nice that they have all these classic Singaporean options. I love their Chee Cheong Fun and Yam Pau - kinda like my midday snacks. What I Don't Love: Their food sells fast!! And I don't always get my porridge - which makes Stevie boy really kinda grumpy at times! ;D…Read More

Western Food - Kim San Leng
2013-05-21
Love, love, love this stall!! The food options are great - and the service rockssssss! The Aunty's always kinda cheeky, smiles and jokes with me. I love talking nonsense with her - and she's sweet. Their food options are great! Their Fish & Chips is yummmy, Chicken Cutlet Rice, Chicken Chop and Lamb Steak are great options too. All dishes comes with either rice, coleslaw, fries or baked beans (sometimes a combination of 3 of 4 or all 4 of the sides). What I Love: Chicken Cutlet Rice!!!!!! This dish is my guilty pleasure. After a long day of studying and feeling really stressed - I order this to pig out. You get yellow, fragrant rice, Chicken Cutlet (which is chopped into small pieces), coleslaw and another side. My fave part is the Sweet Pepper Sauce they dribble over the Chicken Cutlet pieces - I usually ask for more on the rice - and it's yummmmmyyyyyyy. I don't know how many calories it is (I'm assuming quite a bit) - but it tastes darn so good. What I Don't Love: Nothing, nothing, nothing!!!…Read More

Malay Food - Chang Cheng Food Court
2013-05-21
My fave store in this whole Food Court! Not only is the food amazing, the options are huge, portions are huge and the service is pretty great. I love the Aunties here - they are so sweet, homely and remind me of my own Grandmother - who always loves stuffing me with food like a goose. Not only are there local Malay food - but they sell desserts too - from traditional Indonesian to Western tarts, pies and curry puffs - they really have quite the edge. What I Love: Getting rice and all the yummy veggies and meat. Ayam Masak Merah is so good, with Sambal Goreng, Lemak curry, and you can get add Paru, Sotong Sambal, or Ketchup Fish, eggs, bean sprouts, beans, tempeh, etc., and the list just goes on and on and on...... I've tried almost all their options - and it's just all so good. Not particularly healthy - but just oh so good. Have tried their Mee Siam, Mee Rebus and Lontong too. Yummmmmm! For a time, they had Tahu Goreng and I ate that EVERY DAY. And they stopped doing it and I literally was crushed. Oh well. I decided to bury my sorrows by stuffing myself with sambal goreng - and the world is all right again! What I Don't Love: Nothing!!!!!…Read More

Fish Soup - Ban Mian
2013-05-21
This is one of my fave stalls in this Food Court - their Ban Mian options are total yummyness and every thing's so fresh here! They make their own noodles - dumplings, and I love that I can see them making all the food stuff and it's totally fresh.Apart from Ban Mian - they have dumplings, fried and non-fried (steamed) and both options are REALLY yummy. Love the fried options but since it's deep fried - I don't eat it all the time - if I could I'll have it every freakin' day!!!What I Love: Their Ban Mian is great! I've been having their Fish Ban Mian and their Dumpling Soup for a couple of years now. Their Fried Dumplings are a MUST try! Prefer them to the steamed dumplings. The flavor is great - you can taste the pork and veggies and it all just blends and really works in your mouth. They have a really comprehensive noodle options - so its great to try a different dish everyday. What I Don't Love: Lines can get long here - so watch out for those! But they are long for a reason!! ;)…Read More

Fruits & Juice - Coffee Express 2000
2013-05-21
This stall has great healthy options for foodie. It offers fruits, fresh fruit juices, jello, fruit cups, Bubble Tea, and you can buy canned carbonated and off the cup, via the dispenser. The stall is generally operated well under a few staff and they are friendly, cordial and pretty professional. What I Love: They are pretty sweet and nice - service wise and I've always had good service there. I love their fresh fruit juices - especially the mango ones - they are yummy, fresh, pulpy and affordable. I usually get a fruit cup, $1.50 - mixed fruits and single fruit ones are available. I try to choose the one without papayas - since I'm not into them. Urgh. They have quite a few fruit options, always, always, always very fresh! What I Don't Love: Absolutely nothing! It's good to have your daily intake of fruits and veggies - so I'm all for it! ;)…Read More

Hot/Cold Beverage - Varinice
2013-05-21
I've been buying drinks from this store for a couple of years now and I love this store. It's great to have Kaya Toast in the morning, the whole set with eggs, yummy Teh-O, Kopi or Kopi-O and there's Water Chestnut, Soya Bean Drink and Ribena. Quintessential Singaporean drinks, stuff I've had since I was a toddler. What I Love: Their beverage options are great - they are fresh and canned ones, plus you can get tea, coffee and toast. They even sell Panadol, Dried sour fruit, candy, chocolates, and other small trinkets. What I Love the most is the service. The aunties are always so friendly, they do a really good job, and they are patient and work really long hours. They deal with hundreds and hundreds of students all day - but they always greet me with a smile. Amazing teas and local produce. Best part is their prices - they are cheap and so affordable! Woo-hoo! …Read More
