Food Review: Amazonia Bistro
Amazonia Bistro
2016-02-26
Amazonia is an indoor children's playground where there are giant slides, mosh pits filled with balls, mini golf course etc to cater for the little ones to play and enjoy. In its premises there is also a bistro, which serves a mix of Western and local food. This is where parents can sit and have their meal while their kids.I went for their food tasting and here's what we tried:Apple Juice ($5): Very ordinary, and quite expensive for this glass.Caesar Avocado Salad ($13.80): A lot of ingredients here, including grilled juicy chicken breast, sliced avocado, hard boiled egg, cherry tomato and bacon bits. It was not bad overall, and tasted fresh.Chef's Nasi Goreng ($12.70): The plate that we were served was for doubled up in portion for tasting purposes. This came with a lot of ingredients too, such as a drumstick, fried egg, two sticks of Chicken satay, keropok and some achar. The drumstick was delicious with tender meat, while the satay was marinated and cooked very well!Sweet and Spicy Garlic Tiger Prawn ($15.20): Two prawns were served with steamed rice and cooked vegetables. Unfortunately I felt the prawns didn't taste that fresh. The meat was quite soft and mushy...Chocolate Fondant Cake ($7.50): As a dessert lover, I enjoyed this. It's like a lava cake because the slightly molten chocolate filling flowed out (though quite slowly) upon cutting the cake. The chocolate was rich, but the scoop of ice cream melted really fast.Overall, decent food here, though I wouldn't choose to dine here given the other food options within Great World City.…Read More

Food Review: Bao Today Dim Sum Buffet
Bao Today
2016-01-22
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-bao-today-dim-sum-high-tea.htmlTheir high tea buffet is done 'tapas style' and has no menu because the dishes served rotates on a regular basis. There are more than 40 varieties and it's served ala carte where the friendly service crew will bring out the food for you. This high tea buffet is only available at their branch in Rendezous Hotel. There is ample space and there are some booth seats too decorated in Oriental style. For non-buffet patrons, you may order from their normal ala carte menu at the counter, with the following menu above the cashier counter. Free flow Iced Peach Tea and Ice Lemon Tea is included for the buffet.Recommended dishes:Siew Mai: Plump with sufficient meatPork Chop: Tasty and flavourfulNyonya Style Steamed Fish: Very freshChives and Prawn Dumpling: Sufficient fillingsChar Siew Bao: Meaty and flavourful. Buns are fluffyZha Jiang Mian: Tasty, even with the noodles aloneMushroom Dumpling: Love the mushrooms inside. But skin a bit thickScallop Dumpling: Fresh prawns and scallop!Liushabao: BEST DISH. Salted egg yolk custard was flowy, not too sweet or buttery. Buns were light and had a tinge of pandanAverage dishes:Wanton in Spicy Chilli SauceHar GowYu Piao/Jellyfish thingyChee Cheong FunPork and Prawn DumplingRed Bean and Banana PancakeAll in all I enjoyed the food here, as most of them hit the mark for me. Some dishes may be replaced every now and then based on customer feedback and the demand for them. Of course, new ones will be added. There were actually a few more dishes that was available that day but we were too full to try them! The service crew were friendly and patient with us too, and gave us recommendations for strategic eating haha! What I like about this buffet is that you don't need to order in quantities of a basket, but down to a single piece! For example if you want to try more Siew Mai, you need not order a basket that has 3 or 4 in it, but can simply request for one if you're too full. And another great thing about this buffet is its wallet-friendly prices! Going on a weekday afternoon will not cost you more than $20 (after taxes), and the most expensive period on weekend nights is less than $27! Quality dim sum at affordable prices - what's not to love?…Read More

Food Review: d'Good Cafe
d'Good Cafe
2016-01-16
For the full review or more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2015/05/food-review-dgood-cafe.html or http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-dgood-cafe-revisit.htmlD'Good Cafe is located in Holland Village, just 2 minutes away from the MRT, and has been a popular cafe since its opening 3 years ago.Eggs Benedict ($13.50): A standard fare of two poached eggs nestled on brioche and bacon and drizzled with homemade Hollandaise sauce. It comes with a side salad too. The eggs were runny and overall this was alright.Ham and Cheese French Toast ($9): The french toast had a filling of honey-baked ham and cheese, some French berry jam and served with some fruits at the side. Overall the taste was not bad. The bread was quite soft too. But the portion was way too small and the bread too puny.Bacon Carbonara Pasta ($15): This was tasty, with pork bacon and linguine tossed in mixed herb cream sauce. It's creamy enough, but after a while it did get a bit jelat.Seafood Pasta ($17.50): Linguine with prawns, squid rings and mussels tossed in mixed herb tomato sauce. My friend thought there could be a bit more ingredients especially given the steeper price paid. But otherwise it was flavourful.Fresh Sea Prawn Aglio Olio ($16): Their prawns are fresh, and the Aglio Olio was fragrant and done al dente.Creamy Grand Marnier Fruit Deluxe Deutsch Skillet Pancake ($12): A few months ago, D'Good started serving Deutsch Skillet Pancakes, and this is a Christmas special flavour. The oven-baked pancakes is finished off with creamy Grand Marnier sauce and studded with fresh dragonfruit, kiwi, blueberries and strawberries. The pancakes tasted more custard-y and eggy, unlike the light and fluffy kind, which is a nice change from the usual offerings of other cafes. Some hits and misses, but worth a try once. Go during off-peak hours otherwise it'll be quite noisy and crowded.…Read More

Food Review: Yum Cha Takeaway
Yum Cha
2016-01-14
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/food-review-yum-cha-restaurant.htmlYum Cha Restaurant has launched their CNY menu, and it doubles up as a takeaway/delivery menu too! I was privileged to try their takeaway menu items last week, where the food was delivered to a condominium function room. Here's what we had!BBQ Suckling Pig: This was the centrepiece of the table. A huge suckling pig was layed out, all sliced and cut out into many even pieces. The meat was really, really tender and fragrant, while the skin was crispy. It was a little cold by the time we ate it but I guess it's because it's been left out for a while and we were busy snapping pictures. But considering that it's takeaway, this dish was pretty good!Braised Pig's Trotter with Fatt Choy: The meat was also very tender and it fell off the bone easily. The Fatt Choy (black moss) was yummy. The gravy was a little salty though.Roasted Crispy Chicken: I enjoyed this dish because the chicken meat was flavourful, tender and succulent.Fried Rice with Chinese Sausage in Lotus Leaf: The fried rice was not bad, though lacking in wok hei possibly because it's takeaway. The Chinese sausage, also known as lap chiong, gave the dish more flavour, though it could have been cut in bigger pieces.Salmon Yu Sheng: If you're worried about consuming salmon sashimi, rest assured as the fish is sourced from Norway and it's definitely AVA-approved. The Yu Sheng was quite nice, and one noteworthy thing perhaps, is that they make their own sourplum sauce.I think a lot of thought has been put into making sure that the takeaway food stays warm, presentable and tasty. They use this huge bag (below) where there's some warmer inside that keeps the food warm. This technology is called 'cook tek', and makes the food stay warm for 2 hours.Other dishes (both takeaway and dine-in) include Braised Abalone with Dried Oysters and Fatt Choy, Roasted Crispy Pork Belly and more. Their CNY menus and takeaway menus will be available from tomorrow, 15 January to 22 February 2016. And here's a promotion! A 20% early bird discount for takeaway Yu Sheng if you order before 7 February. For in-house dining promotions, receive a limited edition Yum Cha red packet with a minimum spending of $100, while stocks last.…Read More

Food Review: Eight Treasures Vegetarian Restaurant
Eight Treasures Vegetarian
2016-01-13
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-eight-treasures-vegetarian.htmlLast week I had my first vegetarian dining experience, with an 8-course meal to boot! Eight Treasures Vegetarian Restaurant is a family business that sells purely vegetarian food, and they've been running for 9 years now at a three-storey shophouse in Chinatown. As part of the OpenRice tasting, we were treated to their Chinese New Year 8-course set menu for 8-10pax, which cost $368+.Sharks' Fin with White Fungus and Wolfberries: First up was this soup, which was a good take on the actual sharks' fin soup, and much much more eco-friendly! The sharks' fin is the white strands in the above picture, and is made of konnyaku jelly, which withstands heat better than agar. The white fungus has a QQ texture and there were enoki mushrooms inside.Fruit Salad Veg. Chicken: The chicken is made of potato while the skin is actually beancurd skin. To cater to the vegans, the mayonnaise is made without using eggs.Thai Style Veg. Cod Fish: The fish is served looking like a cod fish. It is made of wheat and soybean, and the texture is made to feel like you're chewing on fish meat! The Thai sauce is also made in house, and it was just nice to give you a little kick of the spiciness.Veg. Abalone Mushroom and Tou Pau with Seasonal Greens: The presentation was quite nice, with the broccoli at the outer rim and abalone slices layering on top of the mushrooms. Once again the abalone is made of konnyaku, and the mushrooms were really juicy and had that earthiness taste.Cereal Veg. Prawn: This is my favourite dish out of the many good ones! The prawns are also made of konnyaku, and the texture was ON POINT! If I was blindfolded and unaware that this is vegetarian, I'd have thought I was eating the real prawns. The batter wasn't too greasy, but I'd have preferred it a bit thinner.Fragrant Yam Ring: It was a good dish overall. There were mock chicken meat in it and it was very tasty too!Braised Yee Fu Noodles: A common dish served at wedding dinners, I like this dish because it was delicious, with the noodles having the wok hei and stir-fried with lots of veggies!Honey Sauce Veg. Pork: Zenna, the boss's daughter who was hosting us, very generously let us try this signature dish even though it's not part of the CNY set menu. Firstly, the appearance of the dish can already win you over. It looks just like the actual pork belly, and you can see the distinct layers! Secondly, the taste was equally good too! The konnyaku jelly used to make the 'meat' was soft, yet retaining some bite to mimick the actual pork meat. Highly recommended!Rainbow Yu Sheng Veg.: This was supposed to be the first dish but we decided to leave it till the end. This was pretty much the same as the normal ones you can find out there, just that the 'salmon' is also made of konnyaku jelly! It looks just like salmon sashimi (though it's cut more rectangularly) and tastes as slimy and chewy too! Now you don't have to worry about whether the fish is fit for consumption, given the recent spate of freshwater fish incidents.Fruity Mango Pudding: I thought this mango pudding was a bit sweet. Other than that it's an appropriate dessert - something light and refreshing after so many dishes. (verall, Eight Treasures Vegetarian Restaurant is the place to try tasty vegetarian dishes that will impress even the non-vegetarians! It changed my impression of vegetarian food. They use a lot of soy beans, konnyaku jelly in their food which are healthier too, and don't use egg, onions or garlic. For those of you who are interested to visit them during the upcoming CNY period, they are open every day and reservations are strongly encouraged!Thank you Zenna for being a wonderful and friendly host and OpenRice for the tasting!…Read More

Food Review: Bread Yard
Bread Yard
2016-01-09
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-bread-yard.htmlBread Yard is a simple cafe selling sandwiches and all-day brunch dishes. It used to be located in the SUTD temporary campus in Dover Road which I've visited before, but has since shifted to Fusionopolis. The interior is quite small, in fact fewer seats and more cramped than their previous space.Candied Bacon and Grilled Cheese Pancakes ($9): Two thick stacks of fluffy pancakes served with grilled cheese sticking to the sides of the pancakes, a fried egg and candied bacon on top. The cheese was ooey and gooey and a real delight to chew on! The strips of candied bacon were a delicious too, although being salty as usual but it had some sweetness to it too. You can also tell from the photos that the pancakes were really fluffy. It was a great combination of sweet and savoury. The food has maintained their standard as in the previous location and I'm so glad they've continued to offer quality food at affordable prices. They are just a minute away from one-north MRT exit B so kudos to the convenience!…Read More

Food Review: The Pizza Collective
The Pizza Collective
2016-01-09
For the full review, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-pizza-collective.htmlHave you ever wanted to build your own pizza? Here at The Pizza Collective, it is precisely what you do! But wait, the best part? There are UNLIMITED TOPPINGS you can pile onto your pizza! All for the same price - $12 nett.*Disclamer: I lost a lot of photos that I took during this visit and could only find these few... So sorry we just have to make do with these... :( :(First, you choose the dough base - original or herb. Second, you choose the cheese - mozarella, ricotta or brie (can't remember if it's brie). This part onwards it's unlimited already, so if you'd like to have all 3, that's fine! Third, the veggies. There were capsicum, mushroom, zucchini, cucumber, cheery tomatoes etc. Fourth, the meat - ham, roasted pork belly (wow), teriyaki chicken and one or two more. The variety may not be thaaat great, but hey, for unlimited toppings, I think it's good enough! Last but not least, pick a sauce! The chefs will build the pizza for you as you pick and choose the ingredients and go down the line. Then you'll receive a number tag and wait for your pizza to be ready.Build-your-own-pizza ($12): My pizza was herb base, with lots of mozarella and some ricotta, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, ham and BBQ sauce. The size of the pizza is about 7" to 8", and there is only one size. It was so good! The ingredients were fresh the pizza dough was the flat kind, though not crispy. Each pizza is cut into 8 slices, but I got quite full towards the last two haha. There are other set meals like those that come with a cold drink ($14), hot drink ($13) etc. They do have a few fixed flavours and creations of their pizza, ranging from the savoury to the sweet! So you'll definitely have a wide variety of pizza flavours to choose from. (:…Read More

Food Review: Five By Five
Five By Five
2016-01-07
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-five-by-five.htmlFive By Five is a relatively new cafe opened by the same guys behind November 8 (now defunct), but at a space just below the latter's unit. The interior design is every Instagrammer's dream - white tiles, marble table tops, light-coloured wooden chairs, and unpolished cement floors. Plus the abundant natural lighting completes the checklist of beautiful photos! For the drinks, I can't remember what they were, although the green ones are obviously matcha, because my dining partners ordered it.5by5 Breakfast ($15.50): The usual big breakfast plate, with eggs (sunny or scrambled, of which we chose the latter), chorizo sausage, bacon, honey ham, mushroom and tomato, served on toast and greens by the side. The eggs were very runny and silky, while the bacon and sausages were a bit salty as usual. Mushrooms and tomatoes were fresh and juicy!Miso Roasted Pork ($16.50): Slow roasted pork belly with Japanese Miso seasoning, served with orzo rice pasta with greens by the side. The pork belly was tender and well marinated. The orzo, which was a kind of short-cut pasta, reminded me of the rice in Briyani haha. Overall this dish was not bad.Waffles with 3 scoops of ice cream ($17.80): I felt the waffles could be a little lighter and crispier. But I enjoyed the Durian and Ferrero Rocher ice cream (last flavour was Thai Milk Tea). Also, I think it's pricier than it could have been. There's nothing wrong with this cafe, but there's also nothing outstanding of it either. Food was alright, the ice cream and waffles weren't that mindblowing either. But I guess if you're in the area and bored of the usual Upper Thomson offerings, you can try out this place!Food was alright, worth going if in Thomson area.…Read More

Food Review: Kokomama Marketplace
Kokomama
2016-01-07
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-kokomama-marketplace.htmlKokomama is a casual eatery on the first floor of SOTA. The prices on the posters were affordable and the food looked not bad, so we went in to try.Volcano Chicken Rice Bowl ($7.90): Their rice bowl series allow you to choose a side serving of sauce - chilli crab, mushroom or curry. My friend chose the first one. She said the chicken was quite tender and the sauce was nice. But it wasn't a very outstanding dish.Tuna Mayo Panini ($7.90): My friend said this was comparable to Subway. Hahaha.Ham and Mushroom Baked Rice ($9.90): Under the student meal, you get it at a discounted price ($7.90) plus a drink, of which I chose ice lemon tea. The rice was flavourful and there were sufficient portions of ingredients given! It was also cheesy enough for me.This place really stands out on its affordable food. Taste wise some were good, some ordinary. But they really serve a wide variety of food: baked rice, curry rice, Japanese rice bowls, ramen, pasta, sandwiches, Bingsu and even homemade artisan breads! Plus they are very accessible.…Read More

Food Review: The Benjamins
Benjamin Browns Bistro & Bakery
2016-01-04
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-benjamins.htmlThe Benjamins, formerly known as Benjamin Browns, is a cafe in Forum the Shopping Mall. A few months ago they shot to fame with their Over-The-Top (OTT) milkshakes, which are milkshakes with many ingredients and snacks piled on top such that it's nearly overflowing.Nutella Banana Milkshake($16++): One of their bestsellers, this milkshake has Khong Guan-like biscuits layered with banana slices, cream, Tim Tam inside, a wedge of chocolate cake, and Nutella smeared on the rim to hold the pretzels there. The milkshake was rich, decadent and definitely a chocolate lover's dream. However, as you can see from the picture, it was hard to drink and start eating the ingredients!Strawberry Cheesecake Milkshake ($16++): This milkshake was also milky and creamy, but I couldn't taste any sort of cheesecake flavour in the drink. So I guess the 'cheesecake' comes from the wedge of cheesecake on top, together with the Khong Guan biscuits, cream, strawberry, Tim Tams and wafer sticks.Crabmeat Arriabiata Linguine ($23++): Unfortunately this dish failed to impress. There was little crabmeat, and because of that, it made the dish seem like an ordinary plate of Spaghetti Bolognese...Fish and Chips ($23++): It was such a small and skinny serving of fish. And it came with a scant portion of salad, some fries, and sour cream. I didn't manage to try this from my friend, but even if it was really delicious, I'd rather order something else that's more worth my penny.300g Sizzling Beef Chunks ($25++): It comes with roasted baby potatoes and melted cheese on tomato. The beef chunks were really juicy and flavourful! They were chewy yet had a nice bite too. Very tasty, and this is what I call value for money. The Benjamin burger with bacon, eggs, cheese and mushroom ($25++): The beef patty was shaped in a ball, not the flat kind that's about the same circumference as the burger bun. As a whole it was quite tasty, the beef well cooked. But it wasn't very outstanding either.Overall, for the milkshakes, I think they taste ordinary. It's definitely the presentation that creates the wow factor. And actually, $16++ for a cup of this is very expensive! Food wise it was disappointing. For the prices that you pay, you'd expect a certain quality and portion of the food, but it certainly fell short.…Read More

Nassim Hill Bakery Bistro Bar
2016-01-02
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2015/12/food-review-nassim-hill-bakery-bistro.htmlNassim Hill Bakery is a cafe by day and bar by night, though they do serve proper food at all times. It's located at the back of Tanglin Post Office and right outside the drop off point for cars. You can find their menu at their website http://nassimhill.com.sgSteak and Eggs ($23+): A 150g grilled ribeye steak topped with two sunny-side up eggs, served with their homemade entrecote sauce. The steak was juicy and very flavourful and not too uncooked for my liking.Mac and Cheese ($18+): This is macaroni baked with creamy bechamel sauce and four cheeses. Even though it was just plain Mac and Cheese, no other ingredients, it was superbbb. The cheese was so tasty and rich, probably because four types of cheese are used here. The portion was just nice, deliberately smaller so you don't feel jelat halfway.DIY Steak Sandwich ($22+): The grilled US Angus ribeye steak with balsamic onions are placed beside the toasted ciabatta cut smaller for easier consumption, and it's up to you how you wanna pair both together and eat it. The was good as usual, same as the Steak and Eggs! The ciabatta was crispy and somehow the kind that you won't get full very easily.Cheddar Cheese Bacon Waffles ($19+): Cheddar cheese and bacon bits are baked into their signature waffles, and served with a side of bacon and chive sour cream. The waffles were really crispy. The cheese inside wasn't the gooey kind, but I could still taste it together with the bacon bits. The bacon on the side was nicely grilled too.Nassim Hill Bakery is a good place to go for delicious food, and they have quite a wide variety of drinks too. Their Happy Hour promotion of 1-for-1 draught beers lasts the whole day from 9am to 9pm.…Read More

Food Review: The Dessert Project
Dessert Project
2015-12-30
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2015/12/food-review-dessert-project.htmlThe Dessert Project is an ice cream parlour located in an unassuming HDB void deck in Tiong Bahru. It's not at the hipster/gentrified enclave where Tiong Bahru Bakery is, but towards Havelock Road/Bukit Ho Swee that side. They are surprisingly surviving despite being in a mature neighbourhood!Nutella Toast ($14.90): I forgot the exact name of the dish, but it comes with vanilla ice cream, Ferrero Rocher ice cream, whipped cream, and drizzled liberally with Nutella sauce. We ordered an additional scoop of Pistachio ice cream. The ice cream flavours were pretty rich, especially the Ferrero Rocher and Pistachio. The toast was very crispy, light, fluffy and buttery! It was very fragrant and it didn't feel gelat at all.I definitely think the thick toasts here deserves more than a try. But share it with at least one person! The shop owners are friendly and readily give recommendations. Can tell they take pride in their interesting ice cream flavours and everything else that they do. (:…Read More

Food Review: Group Therapy Coffee
Group Therapy
2015-12-28
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.sg/2015/12/food-review-group-therapy-coffee_83.htmlGroup Therapy Coffee is one of the pioneer third-wave coffee cafes to sprout up in Singapore. One or two years ago, they opened another branch in Katong V, and a sister cafe called Regoup x Scoop Therapy. I went to the first one at Duxton, and it is located on the second storey of a shophouse.Organic Granola and Muesli ($12): This was crunchy and good and I love the balance of the sweet berries and the yogurt! Don't think this is Greek yogurt but I'd like it better if it is.Poached Eggs ($17): Essentially an Eggs Benedict, this was two poached eggs atop a bed of smoked salmon, gruyere and thick toast. The eggs were wonderfully runny and the smoked salmon was fresh and quite generous.Bacon and Mushroom Aglio Olio ($16): It was very flavourful and they were also generous with the ingredients! The serving was big so it'll definitely fill up those hungry folks out there! But as with any Aglio Olio, this was rather oily too.Linguine Bolognese ($16.50): This was another huge plate of pasta. It came with minced beef, onions, carrots, tomatoes herbs and parmesan cheese atop the heap of linguine below. My friend said it was good, but not extraordinary.Steak and Cheese Pie ($16): The lean beef cubes were sufficiently tender, combined with the melted cheddar cheese... Mmm so good! Plus the shortcrust pastry was not too thick so you don't get full just on carbs. The serving may look small but my guy friend found it just nice. Oh and it comes served with a side salad and some chips.Overall Group Therapy Coffee does its food well. Although it's not that cheap since most dishes are above the $15 mark, the portion and quality of food justifies the price. They have free Wifi too so if you come during off-peak hours, you'll have a conducive environment and nice ambience to do some work!…Read More

Food Review: Nunsongyee 눈송이
Nunsongyee
2015-12-27
For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2015/12/food-review-nunsongyee.htmlThe Bingsu craze has taken over Singapore by storm a few months back. But now, there are still Bingsu shops popping up, and I wonder how they are gonna fight the competition... Nunsongyee has been doing well though, as it has opened three branches within its first 10 months here.I went on 3 separate occasions, each time ordering something new. The below are all that I've tried so far.Injeolmi Bingsu ($12.90): This is kind of like their original flavour of Bingsu - chopped almonds with soy powder and rice cakes. The soy flavour was quite strong.Strawberry Bingsu ($15.90): You can't go wrong with strawberries, can you? This was satisfying - the strawberries sweet and the shaved milk soft and fluffy.Cheesecake Bingsu ($15.90): This is one of my favourite of the lot! It's served with real cheesecake cubes and finely crushed digestive biscuits. It's really like eating a cheesecake, because you've got the crumb base and the cheesecake itself, plus the additional shaved milk! The best part is that in the middle of the bowl they layer more digestive biscuits too, so fret not about finishing the toppings!Black Sesame Bingsu ($18.90): Recommended as one of their signatures, this Bingsu is served with a big scoop of red bean paste instead of the usual ice cream, plus almond flakes, black sesame powder and more rice cakes. I don't like black sesame so this naturally wasn't my favourite...Oreo Bingsu ($12.90): Once again, the finely-crushed Oreo bits are not only found at the top, but in between the soft, fluffy shaved ice too. Below is actually more milk (wondering if it's condensed) because it gets a bit sweeter at the bottom. So, once you've dug a path downwards, try to mix it with the top layer so it doesn't get too bland at the start.Choco Banana Bingsu ($13.90): It comes with two sticks of Pepero and a squeeze of caramel sauce and sliced almonds atop the ice cream. The interesting thing is that at the bottom, instead of the suspected condensed milk, there is something that tastes somewhat like Milo? It could be that the chocolate powder mixed with the milk below hence giving such a flavour haha.I love the Bingsus here as they are very soft and really melts in your mouth. It's nothing like the coarse ice from ice kachang and they are indeed fine like snow! Although there is condensed milk served at the side, I don't think it's necessary to pour it in because I'm comfortable with the sweetness level. Prices are a little on the high side (especially the $18.90 ones) so I recommend the ones at a lower price range, which are equally yummy and satisfying! Service was good as the Korean shop owners and assistants were friendly!…Read More

Food Review: OMB (Oh My Bacon!)
OMB
2015-12-25
For the full review or more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2015/12/food-review-omb-oh-my-bacon.htmlOMB stands for 'Oh My Bacon', and no prizes for guessing what they specialise in! Yeap, almost all their dishes have bacon incorporated, from the usual pasta, breakfast plate to more unconventional ones like bacon ice cream (say what?) and desserts. The interior is playfully decorated with bacon figures and cartoons, plus the mismatched furniture brings out the lively and quirky style in this cafe.Bacon Bomb ($28): This consists of pork, beef, bacon and cheese all rolled into one, and served with mashed potatoes and a few leaves below. It's one giant roll so it's good for two persons to share. However, it was a little hard to share because once we sliced it open, everything seemed to fall apart! Taste wise I felt like there was a lot going on. There was the bacon, beef etc, and they didn't go that well together. Or maybe it's cos I'm not really a meat person so I can't appreciate the flavours all at once...? Otherwise it's a perfect dish for carnivores out there! The Cure ($21): It's more like the usual Big Breakfast plates that most cafes offer, but this one here has a bit more ingredients: sausage, bacon, potatoes, mushrooms, eggs (scrambled or sunnyside) and waffles or pancakes. It also comes with a small cup of maple syrup and butter. I love the waffles as it was crispy and not doughy. All the other ingredients were alright, nothing spectacular. Nothing stood out much for me here.Beef and Bacon Cheeseburger ($17): This was a beef patty with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles served in toasted sesame buns, with a side of paprika fries. My dining partner said it tasted ordinary, only slightly better than the run-of-the-mill fastfood burgers.Bacon Love, Truly ($15): This is essentially a BLT. You can choose between classic, candied or spicy bacon, and it is served in pita bread smothered with bacon jam. We went with candied bacon for this sandwich and it was sweet just right. I was hoping they could spice up this sandwich a bit more, because otherwise it's like a Subway sandwich?Waffles with Bacon Ice Cream ($14): As mentioned earlier the waffles were of a good texture, light and crispy and not doughy. The bacon ice cream tasted a bit salty (must be from the bacon haha) but it was injected with bacon bits here and there, which tasted like bak kwa! Haha but this is indeed a unique flavour.Jekyll and Hyde (6 for $12): These are bacon strips dipped in white and dark chocolate. It really was a good combination of sweet and salty! I preferred the dark chocolate as it was slightly less sweet. A good dessert to end the meal!Overall I think OMB is creative with its bacon-inspired food. It doesn't have GST or service charge too. But it has to work harder to improve the taste and quality of the food, otherwise it'll just be quite ordinary.…Read More
