Box n Sticks - A hidden gem at Aliwal Street
Box N Sticks
2011-10-12
I absolutely love Japanese food and Box n Sticks is definitely one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. A hidden gem at Aliwal Street, they don't charge GST nor service charge and it’s opened till 1230am during weekends! It's the perfect hangout place for late night snacks and sake :) Unagi Tempura - I've never heard of Unagi Tempura before, this is certainly unique (at least for me). The batter is really crispy and the unagi is extremely juicy.Tori Karaage - The huge chunks of chicken are deep fried till crispy. It can get a little dry after a few bites though.Kushi Moriwase - A platter with specially grilled items like shishamo, mushrooms, bacon, etc. The sweet sauce compliments the entire dish. Hotate Mentai Yaki - You definitely wouldn't want to miss this. Perfectly grilled and the scallops are big, fat and juicy, bursting with flavor. We ended the meal with their delightful desserts - Tiramisu, goma & yuzu ice cream. The goma ice cream was to die for.I'm definitely going back for more :)…Read More

PORN'S

Heard about this restaurant everywhere, in food blogs, Facebook, etc. Prior to our arrival, I've heard some bad comments about Porn's (i.e. food and service). But still, I gave them the benefit of doubt. When my friend told me that the staff refused to change the timing of our reservation from 615pm to 630pm, I have no idea what was the fuss about. Probably they are fully booked for dinner, we understood. But the fact that the staff gave my friend attitude when they arrived at the restaurant is unacceptable (what I heard from my friend). But I believe there is always both sides of the story.Food - Nothing fantastic. I think the food came quite late and apparently, my friend waited for 40 minutes for her seafood fried rice. We waited quite a while for our pineapple fried rice too. When it was presented to us, everything seems ok. I was sharing it with my boyfriend but was appalled when I saw the amount of rice we were given. I don't expect to pay $10.90 for such sub-standard food. This sets me thinking, are we actually paying for the food or for the empty pineapple shell?! Nothing interesting for the rest of the food. But I love the tom yum soup though.Service - Service was ok except that serving of food is too slow. Need to increase their manpower. But I am not exactly happy with the service of a particular petite looking Chinese girl. She doesn't seemed quite happy when we wanted to order more food. She had this angry and irritated looking face. Not worth going a second time.…Read More
