WORKING TITLE ARAB STREET SINGAPORE
(working title) | Burger Bar
2014-04-15
Up until recently, I always thought the entire historical district of Kampong Glam was a place devoid of anything interesting (food wise that is). Haji Lane was more like a sleepy lane before more unique boutique shops moved in while middle eastern cafeterias weren’t quite to my liking. But I’ve been reading many reviews about the cafes there lately. Only to realise that the entire community has a pretty vibrant cafe culture now that could rival any foodie enclaves.I found quite a handful of which a few I have went more than once just because I love the cafe vibe or simply just wanna something that caught my eye from the previous visits. One of which; Working Title, a cafe along Arab Street that I have bookmarked at the back my head.On first look, it doesn’t seem hippie at all. Cold hard tables with metallic chairs with rather intentionally run-down interior look? Did I mentioned it’s also rather dark too (even though it’s bright sunny outside). I don’t find it comfortable sitting in intentionally dimmed places. Let’s not about talk about photography in here.Tsk tsk tsk. Doesn’t entice you to drop by right? But I shall give you another reason to visit here. Take my advice- walk all the way in, pass the kitchen counter then through the door and viola! A really cozy open concept space fitted with sofa and comfy armchairs. It’s almost like alfresco dining just with the cool breeze from the AC blowing overhead.Menu was rather comprehensive encompassing anywhere from pizzas and finger snacks to main course and simplified brunch. The lasagna seems like a good choice or how about the good old classic deep fried fish and chips? There’s a lot to choose from but nothing in particular that I desire after glancing through each narrative descriptions. But come here on the weekdays say from 1pm to 3pm just for their set lunches. At $9.90 for a sandwich set or $14.90 for a main course that comes with a soup of the day and drink, this is as good as an excuse to use up your remaining cash at another cafe or order a dessert to share. While I reckon my lunch partner’s Smoked Salmon Sandwich with focaccia bread and chips serving was dull and plain compared to what I ordered- The One And Only Burger That We Used To Have. The name doesn’t invoke much within me.Probably because I’m not a vivid fan of bread and meat combination but I have to admit that this is a pretty a decent beef burger to make a meal out of. Although I think it would have better if the beef patty was a little more juicer. As for the truffle fries that came along? Let’s just say that when you have tried pretty good ones out there, chances are you won’t suffice for anything mediocre. So reminding yourself: It’s only a simple no-frill lunch.Their desserts are instantaneously recognisable to any experienced cafe hoppers. Pies from Windowsill, gourmet ice cream sandwiches from The Ice Cream & Cookie Co. as well as cakes from various and famous local cakeries. It might not pleases you to know cafes these days outsource their pastries and cakes. But hey! I would rather have something that has stood through the test of time (and reviews) than one that seems unworthy of my body’s daily calories intake or worst; unappealing and disastrously presented. Trust me, I’ve seen and taste a lot of bad desserts to make the statement above.Overall, I find Working Title a nice cafe to pop by if you’re in the vicinity. While the food here wasn’t exceptionally impressive, the prices and the backdoor ambience is always worthy another revisit from me. I probably wouldn’t mind a few finger snacks and craft beers the next time I’m here too.…Read More

Smoulder Mooncakes 2013
Smoulder
2013-08-26
The softcore bakers from Smoulder are well known among my dessert-loving friends for their exceptionally delicious lava cakes with creative flavours that you don’t get to see in the typical molten cakes. From my personal favourites like White Chocolate Lemon and White Chocolate Pistachio to stronger tasting Milk Chocolate Rum & Raisins and Milk Chocolate Mocha. Smoulder is definitely one dessert specialty shop set to challenge our mindset of eating all things sweet. In preparation of this year’s mid-autumn festival, Smoulder has launched their own mooncakes series with an eye catching statement: The Moon has never tasted better. It almost sounded like a challenge to other established competitors and given the fact that there are so many mooncake makers already, they better be prepared for the annual competition. Everyone is vying a share of the festive pie but not every eateries can handcraft out such pastries successfully. When I think of mooncakes especially snowskin ones, I don’t really reminisce about the past and I certainly don’t picture the moon in my head. All I care is when should I have them instead. I personally regard mooncakes as desserts. Great to have during afternoon tea or taken as an after-dinner dessert. Hence I always prefer lighter sweet tasting ones as compared to the stronger pungent savoury ones.Smoulder snowskin mooncakes came in four flavours: Dark Chocolate, Raspberry, Green Tea and Rum & Raisins. They are certainly all dessert-worthy pastries and it shouldn’t surprise you that these four flavours are also available in their lava cakes too. Apart from the commonly seen green tea ones, dark chocolate was superbly rich especially at the chocolate truffle core. But awesomeness has surely gotta come in the form of the petite pink mooncake. Most of my family and friends who sampled the raspberry flavour sang praises for being refreshingly fruity. For dessert lovers who adore sweet treats with an additional kick, I say Smoulder rendition of the rum and raisin would suffices without being excessively alcoholic. All their mooncakes have a lotus paste base with a chocolate core made with Belgium chocolate. I don’t find them artificially sweeten like some bakeries does so this is one place you can definitely grab a box for personal consumption or as a gift to someone close.…Read More

Tan’s Tu Tu Coconut Cakes
Tan's Tu Tu Coconut Cake
2013-06-29
Unlike today’s pasar malam, the night market in my days was much more vibrant with auctioning running with CDs playing Hokkien songs and the lights from all the stalls seemed to light up the night. It was so packed that it seemed like everyone from the neighborhood were there.Set aside the toys you could win by fishing floating “frogs/ducks”, the next most important aspect has got to be the food. It’s a must have this and a must have that. From oily tapioca cakes to a packet of chewy muah chee but a “I confirm must eat!” food has got to be petite flourly tutu kueh!Sad to say, finding someone who makes tutu kueh is no longer as pre-dominant these days. It’s almost like a dying trade like you can’t find old cobbers repairing your shoes on the streets that easily. Somehow, by a stroke of luck, I managed to stumble upon one hawker stall that solely makes them for a living. To see the steamers in front of the stall, was enough for me to relive my childhood but I just need to try one for myself to complete the nostalgic feeling.Upon buying, I was disappointed. Disappointed to see that my tutu kuehs weren’t steamed on the spot but picked from a stack hidden under some towels. Although it was still warm, I just prefer mine to be piping hot. I wouldn’t mind waiting for them to be steamed you know? The disappointment was gone as soon as I stuffed one of those puffy treats into my mouth. Especially savouring the grated coconuts. They were easily the best tutu kuehs I had in years but I can’t say much for their peanuts. One moment it was sweet and the bite was salty. I can’t say what happened to the process since I am no expert in roasting nuts.Eating these tutu kuehs were like relieving my memories as a child running around the night market, pestering my mum to buy me new toys, playing with my neighbors and always nipping a bit of tutu kueh all in the name of fun, laughter and joy.…Read More

Gone were the good old days...
Open Door Policy
2013-06-29
Gone were the good old days when lunch was just walking down to the school canteen and buying back food up to class to enjoy or walking with a bunch of friends to the nearby Ang Mio Kio hawker centres for dinner. I really missed those good old times with my classmates when school life was about looking for the next place to eat as one big group. Not that I don’t organise outings after graduated from poly life. But to gather everyone out now when they are busy working and finding jobs is definitely a challenge now. Nevertheless, we still compromise with each other’s timing just for sake of savoury food. And what better place to meet that is central and still convenient for all to meet? You thinking what I thinking?I’m thinking how about Tiong Barhu or to be more precise, Open Door Policy.Started by the same people behind Tiong Barhu Bakery and 40 Hands Cafe, Open Door Policy functions more than just another brunch serving cafe that popularise the area but also a modern casual dining restaurant. It was an early weekend evening when my friends and I dropped by for dinner. To my surprise, the place was already running on full-house capacity. It sure speaks of their quality of food I thought to myself. The three of us were gestured to sit by the glass panel kitchen. It does helps facilitate your decision to order since you could just observe what are the dishes that appeals you more when the chefs are busy preparing the dishes for someone else. Occasionally, you get to see the kitchen staffs mistake and you'd wish you just have a huge piece of paper with a statement “I saw that!” and flash it to the chef as they nibble on the fries off your plate.I thought our food will served promptly but 30 minutes into our wine-sipping conversations, I realised that our food wasn’t even anywhere near our table. I got a nasty shock when one of the female servers told me that some of the dishes we ordered have a waiting time of 20 minutes on average.I could totally understand that some places like to prepare their dishes upon customer’s order but shouldn’t these restaurateurs take the courtesy to inform diners about the waiting time? Well, when I first made my orders, no one actually bothered to tell me and that particular female server expects me to know from my first visit and walks away without apologising? In any case, it sure left me with a bad impression of their service that’s for sure. Our food did came ultimately but unlike Abe’s Diner’s Seafood Gratin, this causal dining place sure wasn’t worth the wait. Their Roast Chicken with Chickpea Cassoulet and Wet Polenta ($26.00) which was just two slabs of petite chicken fillet nicely decorated with chickpeas and wild rocket leaves sitting on a huge dish plate. It does not help to know that it took them 30 minutes to roast them tough and dry instead of tender and moist. For that kind of price, I might as well head down to the nearby hawker centre and order one whole roasted chicken to go with a bowl of rice instead.Next up was their 48 hour Braised Beef Cheek with Mochi Potatoes, Carrot Puree and Pea Tendrils ($29.00) which I felt was really nothing special even after being braised for two days as they claimed. Surely the meat was tender and soft but that should be expected since it’s braised so long. Just a pity the accompanying sauce failed to bring out the wow factor in this dish.Among the three dishes we had, I only held in high regards of their Braised Duck Ragout with Pappardelle Pasta and Smoked Tomato Sauce ($25.00). I like the fact that the pasta is evenly coated with the smoked tomato sauce with bits of duck ragout with each mouthful but otherwise, I would expect a bigger portion for the price I’m paying.Their desserts on their other hand were their saving grace. This time, we were informed about the waiting time involved into making of the Chocolate and Pistachio Souffle with Creme Anglaise ($18.00). We weren’t disappointed when we saw a cup of creamy custard cream poured into the souffle right before our eyes.Light and fluffy and still tasted the subtle pistachio from within. I wouldn’t mind telling you this might just be one of the better souffles in downtown Singapore! The last dessert we had was the Apple Crumble with Vanilla Custard ($15.00) which was also well-received by the three of us. If only their main dishes could match their desserts then it would have been the perfect dining experience. I certainly wasn’t impressed by Open Door Policy with what they have to offer. The prices they charge are definitely much more than most places similar to what they serve. I wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon unless I am in search of somewhere with nice coffee to go with souffle. I wouldn’t even recommend this place for a simple light causal meal but maybe their much rave brunch food is more worth going for instead. But if you do see yourself coming down, do make a reservations just to secure table. Another plus point would be their alcoholic drinks going at $8 after 6pm if you had make a reservation. For me, I will always be looking elsewhere to meet my friends over meal and I think I have just found another in Tiong Bahru again. Just stay tune and watch this space!…Read More

Kiseki Buffet - Lack of variety, mundane taste
Kiseki Japanese Buffet Restaurant
2013-06-29
I love birthday celebrations, whether it is my birthday or my friend’s because it is the perfect excuse to go out and have good food without having guilt for killing my own wallet. Making full use of my good friend’s birthday, she dragged me down to Orchard Central for a Japanese buffet. We didn’t make a reservation at all and it was a huge mistake. The restaurant was fully packed with people even though we went on a weekday lunch hour. Having to queue 45 mins before we could enter the restaurant, we were famished and with a quick glance, I was a bit disappointed. The restaurant didn’t seem to have as much varieties as I expected. The one thing I looked forward to was sashimi and to my pleasant surprise, they actually have about 3 different kind of salmon sashimi apart from the raw ones. Their Salmon marinated in sauce left quite an impression on me as it tasted really fragrant and it did not lose the sweetness of the salmon itself. All the salmon sashimi were fresh and were snap away by hungry diners as soon as they are refilled. Moving on to their cooked dishes, one of it was their Salmon Hotpot. The broth was too salty and we couldn’t taste the salmon flavour in it. Worst part of it was that we couldn’t even reach our hand near the pot due to the fire underneath it as it was too big and covered the rims of the hotpot with its flames. Only when it died down then we reach for the soup which I think is not only irritating but dangerous. The Chawanmushi on the other hand was smooth and silky and tasted as great as it looks. The grill meat section have 3 selections; Pork, chicken and Vegetables. The grilled pork was the best and it was cooked just right thus it was juicy and tender while the grilled chicken was dry and slightly tough. Another huge favourite among diners and myself too was the cold fresh prawns which was fat, really sweet and very addictive, the bbq prawns were a let-down as the meat was overcooked and tasted bitter. As for the Tempuras, they tasted good but very plain and normal too, not worth a try as they are soggy after being put out for some time. There is wasabi ice cream served in Kiseiki which is very spicy thus wasabi lovers will love the dish, for non-wasabi eaters like me, we can go for the others which are the black sesame which is not only sweet and fragrant, you can taste the small specks of sesame mixed into the ice cream paste. The Mochi and Waffles on the other hand were not worth a try as they tasted almost like what we could buy from outside supermarket. The desserts overall are a disappointment due to lack of varieties and mundane taste. …Read More

Cheap and good quality sashimi
Sushi Express
2013-06-29
Sushi Express is located conveniently at CityLink Mall near Marina Square and during lunch and dinner time, it is fully packed with people and often, you had to queue up to 15 mins to enter. However, this is one of my favourites if not, my first choice when it comes to satisfying my salmon sashimi craving. Due to its high traffic amount, the food is always fresh, especially their sashimi. Costing only $1.50 a plate, one can fill their stomachs with endless amount of sashimi and other varieties of sushi. The thing about it is, you can get salmon sashimi, salmon sushi, salmon belly etc. all at the same price. It is economically friendly yet able to satisfy the cravings of salmon lovers. The salmon sashimi tastes sweet and you could see trays of salmon being prepared right in front of you. All the sushi are freshly prepared by the chefs at the different section and they tasted pretty tasty. Among all the sushi I tasted, the only one I hated was the sea urchin one which was nasty, tasted like rotten food from garbage. There are also non-sushi dishes served like fresh scallop which are huge in size and tasted fresh and sweet. There is also salmon miso soup which i do not recommend. It is salty and very oily; we could see a layer of oil floating on top of the soup base, totally not worth it. The desserts served are usually pudding that tasted like supermarket pudding thus not worth the $1.50. Anyone who wants to enjoy cheap and good quality sashimi is recommended to visit this place. …Read More

Hot Tomato
Hot Tomato Cafe & Grill
2013-06-29
This Somerset outlet made a strong impression on me with their food quality, ambience and service. I have tried other outlets but this is always the one I go back to. I usually gets the Mixed Grill “N” Aglio Olio ($11.90) which includes pork chop, teriyaki chicken, sausages and of course spaghetti. The pork chop serving is generous and grilled to perfection while it remains tender and juicy. The teriyaki chicken on the other hand is not their forte and taste quite plain and needs the sauce on the side to give it a better and stronger flavour. The sauce on the side compliments not only the meat but the sausages on the plate and personally I find the sausages too peppery thus with the sauce, it actually tones down the pepper taste and add some sweetness to it. The aglio olio spaghetti is what makes me return to their restaurant. Some aglio olio spaghetti is really spicy and oily but Hot Tomato does it otherwise. Their spaghetti has a certain spice flavour to it without being too spicy and oily for my liking.…Read More

This small quiet Japanese cake shop is situated at the corner of Duxton Hill. I was on the hunt for the perfect birthday cake for my fussy eater mum and one of my good friends told me to give it a try and promised I wouldn’t regret. With high hopes, I made my way down alone to the café to do a taste test and did some research on their popular selections. After making myself comfortable in the café, I proceeded to order 2 slices of cake to try out.Berries Berries was one of the more popular flavours according to my research plus it was a Chef’s Signature. Undoubtedly, it was the best berries cake I ever had. Not only was the cake fluffy and soft, the cream was equally tasty and the flavours from the fresh berries exploded in my mouth. The cake was not too sweet and the natural sweetness came from the berries and cream itself. I personally do not like my cakes to be thickly coated with artificial whip cream on the outer layer but the fresh cream used in the cake was minimal and did not make me feel sick after a while from eating too much cream.Napoleon was a special recommendation from a friend of mine and the puffy pastry left me with a good impression. The layers of crispy puff were complimented with the sweetness of the strawberries. It is pretty interesting to me as it was my first time having such a cake and I didn’t expect it to taste this good. The crispy puff was the chef’s specialty and it reminded me of a perfectly baked croissant, fragrant, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. However, it can get really messy while having the cake as the crisps just gets everywhere. In the end, I ordered the full size version of Berries Berries as my mum’s birthday cake and my whole family loved it and even branded it as the “best cake they ever had”. If only the location was much more convenient for me and I will be stopping by frequently. …Read More

BAKERZIN

This dessert place is pretty common with many outlets in Singapore and many dessert fans. Craving for some quality dessert, I head down with a partner in crime to try out all their chocolate desserts on their menu. Okay, maybe not all but almost all. The first one on the table was Coupé Black Forest Verrine (S$12.50) which was simply their homemade ice cream with brownies and cherries. The brownies were a tad too hard and bitter for me and I find the ice cream delicious but the dish failed to wow me in general. It wasn’t worth the price I pay and I could create the dish myself at home. Next came the Chocolate Soufflé (S$11.50) accompanied by a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. The soufflé was soft and rich in chocolate taste, it would be a great dish but one thing was horribly wrong with that particular dish on that day. The soufflé was over baked thus leaving us with a bitter aftertaste, such a shame for the key component of the dish to be overdone. With that, the dish was also a terrible let down. Lastly came the Warm Chocolate Cake (S$11.50) that was raved as one of the best lava cakes in Singapore. My high hopes were dashed when my spoon took a punch into the cake. In my humble opinion, I feel that a good lava cake must have the chocolate flowing out of it just like lava. However, that’s not the case for Bakerzin’s and the cake was more like a strong chocolate cake that have warm chocolate paste in the middle. It had all the qualities of a good chocolate cake; fluffy, rich, slight bitterness, mild sweetness but it does not have the main quality of a lava cake unfortunately. Though Bakerzin’s chocolate desserts failed to excite my taste buds, there are so many other desserts on their menu that I have yet to try and I will definitely be back soon. …Read More

NYDC

NYDC is a familiar name to many Singaporeans as it has several outlets in Singapore including Bugis Junction, Tampines 1 etc. NYDC stands for New York Dessert Café and I have been eyeing on the cakes they display for quite some time. Unable to resist the temptation, I decided to give my partner and I a little treat to their cakes during one of the evenings. The cake I really wanted to try first was their New York Cheesecake, and to my delight, it was soft and cheesy. The cake has a very creamy texture and the taste of cheese was literally dancing in my mouth. The biscuit like base was sweet but compliments the cheesecake very well. It was one of the best New York Cheesecakes I ever had and is definitely worth a shot for anyone’s time. Boo Boo cake sounds very child-like and just like its name, it is a cake that even children will love. It is a classic chocolate cake that will capture the hearts of many with its rich chocolaty taste and fluffy cake mixture. The cake is coated with a layer of dark chocolate which tasted sweet with a slight hint of bitterness. No wonder it is one of the must try in the café. Lastly, the server recommended us to get the Cookie Monster cake on the menu, commenting that it is one of the hot favourites too. We were very surprised when we took the first bite into the cake because it was really cold, like ice cream cold. Slowly, we realise Cookie Monster is made up of an oreo cookie base together with double chocolate chip and mocha almond fudge ice cream on top. It is an almost perfect match as the ice cream was filled generously with chunks of cookies that melted in our mouths with every bite. The Oreo base was crispy and added another layer of texture and flavour to the smooth ice cream. Even as I am typing, my mouth is watery and I can’t wait to go back and taste the cakes of NYDC again. …Read More

Paris Baguette Cafe
Paris Baguette
2013-06-26
Royal Pudding had been really popular on social network such as Instagram and finally it was time to fulfil my tongue’s curiosity. Hence, on a hot afternoon, I headed down to Paris Baguette café situated as Wisma Orchard. The entire café was really crowded even though it was a weekday afternoon and there were barely any empty seats. Paris Baguette café offers a wide variety of pastries including bread, sandwiches, wraps etc. There were also huge selections of cakes for sweet lovers to choose from including their famous Royal Pudding. Struggling with choices, my partner and I finally settled with Strawberry Fell in Love. The name was tempting but the taste was a let-down. The cake was far too sweet and we both agreed that it was nothing but a block of sugar and we could hardly taste the strawberries. However, the small piece of Rose Macaroon which was part of the decoration was surprisingly delicious and fragrant. Oh My Baby Crepe was the other pastry we decided to give a try and unfortunately, it did not taste as good as its name sounds too. The crepe was very bland with slight touch of sweetness from the cream and strawberries in between the layers of crepe. It tasted alright but nothing fantastic and did not capture our hearts. After a few mouthful, the crepe gets really dry and soon we were sick of it to continue. In terms of drinks, I went with the Lemon Ade that was the perfect drink to tackle the hot afternoon. The fizzy drink had a strong taste of lemon that was not overpowering and the sourness was just right; not too sour, not tasteless either. My partner on the other hand ordered a drink consists of a mixture of kiwi and orange that was way too sour to our liking. We ended our tea with the Original Royal Pudding and Caramel Royal Pudding. I preferred the original flavour as it tasted not as sweet as the caramel version but both versions were very tasty and was definitely worth our trip down. The cold pudding was creamy and smooth and melted in our mouths as though we gave our mouths a cooling spa. In conclusion, the one thing worth my return visit to Paris Baguette Café was their pudding only but their bread products are really popular among customers too thus on my next visit, I will probably give them a try. …Read More

Canele's macarons
Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie
2013-06-25
Canele has always been my favourite place to grab those sweet little treats which we call macarons. Forget about the expensive Ladurée. If I can find the best at Canele at a more affordable price, I'm sticking with them instead. Nicely packed in a box of 8, I just couldn't resist grabbing 2 to eat before I took any photos. These were bought by my cousin and she got all my favourite flavours right! The rose was the best among so many others I tried. Chocolate and Salted Caramel works wonders too. What I really like about Canale's rendition of the French treats is they dont taste artificially and certainly not just overtly sugary sweet. If there's a canele shop right under my block, you can almost be sure I will always grab a few on days when I just feel like having something sweet at home. …Read More

Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie: My No. 1 favorite

When I came to know about the restaurant named after a duck-billed animal back sometime ago, it was still a small little shop tucked amidst Clifford Centre of Raffles Place. Hidden from view and easy to forgo since it occupy the corner of one floor.Pastas aren’t always at the top of my mind when it comes to what to dine. So I have to confess that I didn’t held the Italian- Mediterranean restaurant in high regard at that point in time.Truffle Fries ($6.90).But despite my lack of interest in them, my friends were always raving about their one of a kind pastas. The variety that you don’t find even in most Italian restaurants. So when I got news about of their grand opening at Bugis Junction, I knew it was a good opportunity to wrestle a partner and try their pastas for myself.A quick glance at their menu and I have to say it’s pretty extensive. From your greens and side dishes for sharing down to their pastas and risottos, everything seem tempting to have especially when there’s visual cues to infer upon.Since it was only for two, I decided to start off our dinner with something simple. Something douse in white truffle oil and topped with generous shavings of truffle. And that’s how I love their rendition of the French classics.Setting aside truffles, another one of my favourite ingredients is prosciuttos or Parma ham. Happiness was when I saw Prosciutto & Truffles ($18.50). A dish of homemade well sauteed garlic-cream pastas garnished with thinly sliced Italian ham and truffles. As good as it was, my partner and I found the pasta dish to be overpowering. Would be better if the taste was more balanced. If you aren’t a fan of flour, you might considering opting for their mains which I thought was equally good. Take for instant, their crispy and melt in the mouth Press Pork Belly ($19.90) then drizzled in a generous serving of braised apples, garden vegetables and a honey & clove apple glaze. A wonderful complement I must say.True to their Mediterranean cuisine, everything is fresh and of a certain quality. So if you’re in the mood for fresh homemade pasta under $20, Platypus Kitchen is one choice to consider!…Read More

Where latte art meets real life art
Shots Café
2013-06-25
When I first visited Ann Siang Hill, I was overwhelmed to see all the fancy high-end tapas bars and interior impressive cafes all perched up the hill. At the moment in my life, I was exploring the place alone and the weather was exceptionally humid and warm. I needed somewhere to rest my aching feet and quench my thirst.Greeted by a cool blast of wind upon entering the cafe call Shots, I knew nothing what to expect from this place. Maybe a nice cup of iced tea followed by a cuppa of hot coffee? For all I care is just to take a rest and enjoy the air-con place!Being the only coffee house in the vicinity, I would say this is one cafe you must visit if you’re on your cafe-hopping spree. There is without a doubt I could see myself coming down regularly if I ever need a strong cup of coffee to enrich my conversations with friends over tea. But the thing about being a food blogger is you’re always on the lookout for the next cafe to try out.It was about a year since my first visit before I managed to drop by the place again. To my surprise, I find the former location of the cafe taken over by a bar. Now their current location, just a minute’s walk from the intersection of Ann Siang Hill and Club Street. It’s a totally new concept at the cafe now with artwork of various themes all neatly hanged along the walls. One could grab a nice cuppa and sit there for hours reading books and finishing your work or chitchat with friends what’s for dinner after tea. Irregardless of what you do within the four walls of the coffee house, you can be assured of the quality of Shot’s coffee to go with their gelato or cakes if you so fancy.Forget about that expensive and unworthy Antoinette. Just make your way down to Shots Cafe and politely request for a personalised latte art instead. I think it’ll be an understatement to just say this is just another cafe on Ann Siang Hill. Wouldn’t you agree? After all, this is the place where latte art meets real life art.…Read More

Galicier Confectionery, Tiong Bahru
Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry
2013-06-25
While I have no blood relations with any Peranakans, I do have a profound love for Nonya kuehs. It reminds me of an elderly neighbour who always bakes them in the late afternoons and that coconut rich aroma emitted from her kitchen would be more than enough to distract me from catching a Zappos or an Articulo as I scramble next door to take a quick bite of those wonderfully homemade kuehs. Ahh... Those were the days when I was young and childish...Sad to say she has move out of my neighbourhood many years ago and since then I have been buying kuehs from Bengawan Solo. They were great but not really fantastic. I guess handmade ones are always better than machine made ones. But it doesn’t matter already. I am just glad I found somewhere better and somewhere nice. The name’s Galicier Confectionery and the place’s hidden amidst the old estates of Tiong Bahru. A shop that sells nothing but cakes kuehs and whatever old school. It’s like a dream come true! How I wish I just live above the confectionery and that would make afternoon tea with kuehs so easily accessible everyday! If you have to ask, I would say every kueh is worthy of the confectionery’s name but my personal favourite has got to be their Kueh Dadar. It’s very different from your typical ones. Take a bite if you have a chance and you will find nothing but white grated coconuts instead of overly sweeten gula melaka ones. Coupled with their thin pandan wraps would easily make Galicier’s kueh dadars as one of the best ones in Singapore.Concealing a molten gula melaka core and then evenly coated with pure white grated coconut, their Ondeh Ondehs are a joy to enjoy! Even though it’s been quite sometime since I had Galicier one’s, I can still imagine the explosive sweet core bursting into my mouth. It’s a piece of heaven that’s for sure! Their Tapioca Cakes on the other hand, tasted just like their ondeh ondehs just without that awesome molten gula melaka core…But if I were you, I would just pick a few more ondeh ondehs instead but that’s me for you. I am pretty excessive that’s for sure! It’s really hard to find old school shops that still churns out good old school kuehs these days so you bet that I’m glad to find Galicier. I heard that they have another outlet somewhere around Serangoon but I think I will just stick to Tiong Bahru one whenever I feel like relieving the past again.…Read More
