Ye Shang Hai Teochew Porridge - Kim Shan Leng Coffee Shop
2014-06-25
Friday = Party all night!*Cue Pitbull Music*If you didnt end up hugging a toilet bowl tonight, and feeling a little peckish, let me introduce this little unpretentious gem, which I discovered last night!Opened till 5am, dont be surprised to see a queue at night, as this stall has loads of fans for their delicious and extensive range of yummy ingredient. Despite feeling bloated, I couldnt resist the dishes that was placed in front of me!Special mention to the stirfry liver and potato which were so good, my chopsticks was drawn to it like a magnet, continuously picking at it!The pork liver at Ye Shang Hai is mixed with a savoury thick brown sauce which is perfect to mask the horrible liver smell! For the first time in my life, i saw myself eating more liver than I had ever eaten in my life!! It is that good! The potatoes are also well cooked to the point where it is soft, but not mushy, the perfect bite. Just mentioning it is making me salivate.…Read More

Muchachos – Burrito Bar
Muchachos
2014-06-25
If you are looking for something a little different from the typical Asian and Western food which is available, you can pop by Muchachos, a burrito bar which serves up casual simple Mexican wraps which are so big it call fill you up.Once you step into this little cozy hidden gem, you will be greeted by a black white and grey palate of colors and a lovely cable lights which hang from the ceilings. The menu is simple with different flavored Quesadilla, Burrito and Burrito Bowls. Don’t be surprise that a burrito will cause you at least SGD 12.45, because the portions here are so huge! One burrito was enough for both me and Mr Heng, as we later found out after we ordered. There is just a single counter top within the establish which has various toppings which you can choose to add into your burrito! I had every single item added onto my burrito, and even had a serving of guacamole. What is Mexican food without a bit of Guacamole? You can see from my hands how big the burrito is! I cant even circle it with one hand!Sorry I had to show you these half eaten pictures but we couldn’t find a knife to properly slice it.You can see how much ingredients have been packed into it and served up to us to ensure that no hungry customers walk out. I couldn’t even finish mine and had to pack it home!Tip to the ladies: Try sharing one with your girlfriends first! If you are looking for a day to wind down and chill out with your friends, you might want to consider knocking back a bottle of beer with their Wing Wednesday promotion where you can get 50 cents buffalo wings, with a minimum order of 6!***VERDICTWell worth a visit for their delicious burrito wraps, I cant think of another place which serve up something similar. Generous portions and a cosy environment located near Outram park MRT station, I cant think of a reason why you shouldn’t be popping over!…Read More

Immanuel French Kitchen
2014-06-25
When I mention about French Dining, the word “Expensive” seems to be the first to pop up in people’s mind. However, I have just recently visited this little gem located in Bukit Merah and I am so excited to share it with you guys!Chef Immanuel’s French Kitchen is set to become one of the latest casual french dining spots to join the growing number of atas kopitiam stalls that serves restaurant quality standards at affordable prices!I have visited this place twice in a week and tried quite a significant number of dishes (almost everything) and it is sooo good!DUCK RILLETTEServed with Gherkin and BreadSGD 7.90CHICKEN LIVER PATE WITH PORT WINEServed with breadSGD 7.50FROGFrogs legs sauteed with shallot garlic and parsleySGD 12.60FOIE GRASPan Fried Foie Gras served with Caramelized Apple, Herb Salad and Orange GastriqueSGD15.40BURGUNDY ESCARGOTBaked half a dozen snail with tomato fondue and garlic herbs butter served with breadSGD 11.90PORK BELLYPork Belly Braised in Kakuni Style Served with Duxelle Mushroom, Onsen Egg & Potato FormSGD15.40SOUS VIDE CHICKEN BREASTSous Vide Chicken Breast served with cheese rigatoni pasta Gratin, Mushroom Fricassee and Mustard SauceSGD12.60FRENCH DUCK LEG CONFITConfit of duck leg from France served with Mash Potatoes, Braised savoy cabbages and Au JusSGD14.90STEAK AND FRIESSteak served with Shallot and garlic confit and french friesSGD 18BEEF BOURGUIGNONBraised beef in red wine with bacon, mushroom and onion, served with crushed parsley potatoSGD 17***VERDICTOne of my favorite dining dinner. Definitely not what you would expect in a Kopitiam setting. The meat served up to use were all tender juicy soft and the flavors are well balanced without ever reaching out for additional condiments.I tried picking out a a favourite main, but I am spoiled for choices! However if you are in the mood for something different, the pork belly is one which you definitely have to try out. The spoonful of egg, mushroom, pork belly and potato foam is mind blowing good. Mash potato will never be good enough for me again.Portions are definitely generous enough for me to be stuffed after the meal, and even if the mains don’t fill me up, anyone of the side dishes or starters will definitely do the deed.Definite worth the trip up to Bukit Merah!…Read More

SUFOOD – Vegetarian with a twist!
Sufood
2014-06-25
Got an invitation to visit one of the latest restuarant in Raffles City shopping centre called “SUFOOD” which is sounds like “Shu Fu”, the chinese word for Comfortable! Serving up Italian inspired vegetarian food at affordable prices, they offer a 7 course meal at only SGD 25++!THE SUFOOD APPETIZERMade up of 3 different bites, you would have to start from right to left, with the flavours increasing in intensity. Flavours are uniquely different and I love the Tomato Jelly which tangy sour!1. Japanese Yuca root which is drizzled with blueberry coulis2. Oriental white water snowflake greens3. Savoury Cherry tomato jellyROSEMARY BREADSTICKSYou can dip your breadsticks with the sweet mustard or blueberry dip. My savoury tastebuds vote for the Mustard sauce, while the blueberry version wasn’t too bad either!TROPICAL FRUIT SALADMUSHROOM SALADMushrooms together with broccoli and cherry tomatoes are mixed in a vinegar dressing to give you a tangy start to your meal. Definitely my top pick for salads! It is also the only cooked starter in the available selections.SUMMER SALADCLASSIC GARDEN SALADTried all 4 soups as well, and the Chinese soups definitely overshadowed the western offerings! Both the “Root Soup” and ”Cabbage & Sweet Potato Stew” got raving reviews from all of us. the Cream of Pumpkin soup as well as Mushroom & Pea Pottage turned out to be slightly watery and bland.CABBAGE AND SWEET POTATO STEWROOT SOUPCREAM OF PUMPKIN SOUP + MUSHROOM & PEA POTTAGEThe mains were crazy delicious and definitely the best part of the entire dining experience! I can’t decide which is my favourite cause they are all so delicious!BAKED POTATO AL FUNGHISteam King Oyster mushrooms which are drizzled with herb vinaigrette turn out so soft and juicy that I could stop myself from having more. After the food tasting, I even got the same mushrooms and pan grill them at home.STAR PIZZAAnother recommended item would be the “Star Pizza” which is pizza shaped into a star shape and filled with generous toppings of oyster mushrooms, cream cheese and mustard sauce! I especially love how they generously topped the entire pizza with salted seaweed that gave it another flavour boost! There was even a guinesss record for the most number of Star pizza made one the first day of its opening!MEDITERRANEAN VEGETABLE SKEWERSIf you are going for something a little light and healthy, the Mediterranean skewers are definitely not to be missed. Grilled and braised in homemade italian herb dressing, you can also enjoy the vegetables with a serving of fried rice too! Probably one of the most beautifully presented dish of the night!WILD MUSHROOM CHARCOAL TAGLIATELLEThe Wild Mushroom Charcoal Tagliatelle was recommended for the health benefits which charcoal brings. On its own, it is pretty tasteless, however give the noodles a little twirling to soak up the yummy sauce it is resting on. The King Oyster mushrooms are shaped in sauce a way we kept thinking we were eating squid! I am pretty surprise how much I enjoy dish despite the lack of meat in it!There are also baked rice dishes and vegetable pita pockets which are equally yummy as well. They are a tad common in comparison to the other dishes, but definitely worth a try too!OSMANTHUS FLOWER JELLYSESAME PANNA COTTAI love this dessert for its smooth texture. For those you are afraid of the strong sesame smell, not to worry as the entire dessert is very light in flavour.VANILLA ICE CREAM WITH HOT CHOCOLATEOne thing to note, EAT FAST! If not the chocolate will form a hard chocolate dome over the ice cream. This simple dessert is still lovely to enjoy.BANANA CHEESECAKETo end of the meal, you get a choice of tea and tropical fruit blends with the desserts. We managed to try other quite a number of items and the one which stood out to me was the Yuzu Chamomile Tea and the Passion Fruit Calamansi Tea. Sour and yet leaving a coying aftertaste after every sip, it has easily to love this 2 drinks after a full meal!***VERDICTAfter tasting so many dishes at this restaurant, I highly recommend this as a stopover for your family dinners or even as a healthier alternative for gatherings with friends! Well thought out dishes which are rich in flavour and uses natural ingredients, it is a good stepping stone for people looking to start on a vegetarian diet. It was the first time I left a food tasting feeling un-sinful about the amount of food which I had consumed.I definitely did enjoy my experience there and thank you so much to the PR team for having me down to have the first taste of the lovely menu!…Read More

Dining with Yummy Tonkatsu
Saboten
2014-06-06
Saboten might be a familiar name to you if you are a fan of Tonkatsu. Known to been one of the go-to places for their golden brown breaded pork and chicken cutlets, you will have a definitely leave the place with a smile on your face. If you are not a fan of Tonkatsu, you will be please to know that they have recently launched their brand new dining concept in their IMM outlet, which consist of shabu shabu and teppanyaki offerings.Once seated, we were given a bowl of thinly sliced cabbage with dressing to munch on while waiting for our orders. Super DA BOMB! I love how fresh and crisp the taste is!The chawamushi also one not to be missed out! Soft and melt in your mouth delicious!I managed to try out a couple of sets with my friends and they all turn out pretty delicious, except for pork which had a porky smell which I didn't like. The sets are really generous and you will definitely be stuffed once you have finished everything! If you like fish, don’t miss out on the cod fish set! Just one look at the cod fish and you will know why I am salivating all over my keyboard as I finish up this entry. Some of the items which I had to highlight where the mentai prawns and scallops which are slurpiliciously good. We even ordered extras to feast on it.As always, their Tonkatsu is deliciously heavenly when dipped in the grounded sesame and Tonkatsu sauce mix.VERDICTThis place is definitely worth a visit, if you are a seafood and tonkatsu lover! I can't wait to sink my teeth into another piece of yummy Tonkatsu!…Read More

Lau Wang Claypot Delights
2014-04-16
I was recently introduced to Lau Wang Claypot through Openrice’s food tasting session and I was surprised to find that this food stall has a history of close to 30 years of producing yummy clay pot dishes! The store has been taken over by a young towkay with the traditional receipes all passed down to him. In order to make sure that he is keeping up with times, he has made very slight changes to the receipes to cater the the ever changing consumer preference and yet keep to the traditional taste.Located in Serangoon, it is a 5-10 minutes walk from the MRT station and it is hidden away from the main road, making this place hardly noticeable. However this is a place which I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good pot of Claypot Sesame Chicken. My favourite stall had closed down quite a while back and I finally found a replacement for it!Lucky me managed to try out a fair bit of the menu as we had a really big group that day!A chilli lover myself, this one hits the spot! Not to spicy to numb your tastebuds, yet enough to let you savor the heat on your tongue as you drench your bowl of rice with the sauce!I can’t decide which one I like better, the spicy or the non spicy version, but I am sure that on days where I am craving for a simple savory dish, this will definitely be on my food list.SGD 4.50 / SGD 6.50 This isn’t my favourite as the soup isn’t as “herbal-ly” as I would have like it to be, There is definitely ample amount of herbs throw into the mix to make the soup, however as each clay pot is made fresh on the spot, there isn’t enough time for the herbs to infuse its full flavor into the soup, leaving a pretty weak herbal taste.1 Frog SGD 8 / 2 Frogs SGD 15I am never a fan ofliver and kidney, however those who tried the dish have commented that it is overall a pretty yummy dish, however the pig’s kidney didn’t seem to have been properly handled as there was quite a smell to it. Such a pity.SGD 4.50 / SGD 6.50Soft and flavoursome, this is a dish which I would recommend as well! Well cooked freshly sliced fish, with slightly spicy sauce base, I found myself reaching out for this dish several times during the meal. Definitely worth a try.SGD 4.50 / SGD 6.50SAMBAL SOTONG WITH LADYFINGERSWith a generous amount of seafood thrown into the mix, like squid and prawns, this will be one which seafood lovers would go for. The price is definitely reasonable for such a generous serving.SGD 6.00The Kangkong is definitely well cooked, where it was presented to us crunchy, instead of limped from overcooking! I definitely appreciate the effort placed into dish.SGD 4.00***VERDICTWith their well cooked dishes, generous portions and fresh ingredients, it is definitely worthwhile to make a trip down to Lau Wang Claypot Delights. My one complaint about all the dishes is that they come off pretty oily. The owner apologise to all of us that day and told us that he will definitely look into reducing the amount of oil used in the cooking. I am pretty sure that a friendly reminder for a lesser oil when placing your order will be taken note of.The location can be a little troublesome to find. However with google maps, I am sure you will have no problems getting there since it is near to an MRT station.…Read More

Slappy Cakes
2014-02-27
Drove up to the Grandstand to try out one of the DIY pancake palours in Singapore! Slappycakes take over a 2 storey outlet offering DIY pancakes and simple mains.Originating from the US and with international branches in Phillipines, Japan, etc, I was definitely excited to try out what they had to offerWe ordered a smattering of side dishes to go along with the wholemeal and chocolate batter that we picked. There was bacon, cheese, mushrooms and blue cheese (not in the picture)We had fun playing around with the pancakes but we found the mixture to be super watery, that resulted in mushy pancakes. The bacon looks overfried, while the mushrooms came with a metallic smell as if it was just freshly taken out from a can. Pretty unpleasant in my opinionWe also order the Eggs Royale which were ok, but nothing particularly fantastic. VERDICTThe food at Slappycakes were pretty underwhelming and I didnt expect the pancakes to be of that quality. The service in that restaurant is reasonably ok, but dont expect happy looking staff cause everyone just look like they are ploughing through their work day.Would I be back again? Probably not. I guess one time as a novelty is more than enough.…Read More

Simple Yummy and Cheap!
Central Hong Kong Cafe
2014-02-26
Stepped into Vivo's Central Cafe for a quicky lunch after spotting its quirky vintage exterior. Serving up simple cheap Hong Kong food fare, we enjoyed our visit as each item ordered delighted our tastebuds.Wanton Mee was soft and springy with ample seasoning and wantons provided. They didnt scrimp on the food despite the low prices so that is a huge plus point.Crispy duck rice wasnt too bad 2 eggs atop a bed of rice and a sprinkling of other ingredients.Well flavoured, this was a simple bowl of maggi notes with spiced pork cube and vegetables. Confort food which we kept teasing our colleague to pass us money to help her cook Maggi MeeNot a favourite Dan Fan Mian, this version was more soupy than peanut version which I like. The soup is soft and springy which makes it easily for slurpng it down. I wouldnt called this dan dan mian, instead Minced Meat Noodle soup will be more apt!Soft and packed with ample pork floss, this is a yummy starter before the meal. The thing I love most in this trip, is the Ying Yang which came in an old school design cup! Keep grabbing shots of it still my colleague want to whack me. Taste wise it is ok, but it would be better if it could be thicker.***VERDICTWith their cheap prices and yummy simple food, this is place where I foresee myself heading back to at least twice this year. Definitely worth a visit when you are down and about at Vivocity!…Read More

CALI, Park Avenue Rochester
2014-02-26
Bueno Vista has little cafes popping up everywhere and Cali Cafe was my choice for lunch after spotting them on my Entertainer App List.Grabbing a few of my colleagues, we ordered quite a few mains to try out. Sadly the meal didn't impress some of my colleagues where they found the tastes to be bland and one of them even said it was like eating junk food..For starters, the Waldorf Salad was a saving grace which everyone wish they had order instead of the pumpkin soup which wasnt well seasoned and artifically sweet. The salad was fresh and chunky with a good dash of salad sauce thrown into the mix.Pumpkin soup as mentioned earlier, was a let down.Fish & Chips were served cold, and the portions didn't fill up one of my male colleague who also commented that the fish wasnt fresh at all.12 hr Slow Cook Beef was my choice. The mash potato was ok, but the beef turn out way too salty. Perhaps it was meant to be eaten with the mash potato to mute its saltiness. I also wish more vegetables was added onto the dish. All Day Breakfast Set was huge in portion and my colleague who order this felt that it was pretty good, so we all kind of got a little envious of him. With 7 items on his plate, this can definitely fill you up!This was a dish which my colleagues enjoyed and they all gave their thumbs up to this sinful dish which has cheese and ham as it stuffing in the middlw. A little overfried if you had to pick on this dish.VERDICTI am caught in a 50/50 situation. I am not sure if it is worth me heading back since there are so many other good cafes around for me to spend my money at. The food isnt mindblowing good, but they arent bad either. I would still recommend people to try it out, if you would like to go someplace new.READ MORE REVIEWS @ ROUNDTUMTUMS.COM…Read More

Chock Full Of Beans
2014-02-26
My birthday brought me to Chock Full of Beans for a quiet lunch with one of my favourite food kakis. My 2nd visit to this place, I am back to try out their main dishes after having a good impression of their coffee and drinks. Our order of Mocha and Cappuccino is served with cute little cartoons drawn into it! I love how colour is incorporated into the latte art. Definitely put a smile on our face :)The truffle mushroom spaghetti wasn't too bad, with ample amount of mushrooms mixed with truffle oil and pasta. The pasta was al-dente so I was pleased with it. The overall taste is a little underwhelming as the flavours are pretty much from the truffle oil, and there wasn't anything special about the taste.VERDICTI wish I had a better review for the food but I was left a little disappointed. I have heard rave reviews about their brunch menu, so I guess that would be the reason why I am back at Chock Full Of Beans.…Read More

Handcrafted Desserts
Ciel Pâtisserie
2014-02-26
It seems like more and more cafes are choosing to set up below void decks to avoid the high cost of rental in premium districts.Ciel Patisserie is a small little cafe that is located at Lorong Ah Soo. A first of its kind in the area, the store is located in between provisions store and a clinic, place which most doesn't even consider ideal for a cafe. Yet it a still sees a steady stream of customer in the area and one visit to the cafe I could see why. With a limited amount of cakes made per day, you would definitely need to book ya cakes if you would like to make a evening trip as they are usually sold out by 5pm.The cakes here are definitely beautifully crafted and I was so tempted to order every single one of them cause they just look so good! Too bad there was only 2 of us and limited stomach space.A round shape dessert, it isn't particularly beautiful to photograph but the taste is exquisite. If you are one that go for heavy flavors, this will be the ideal choice for you. The velvety thick chocolate mousse together with the crunchy praline base complement each other perfectly well. SGD 5.50Well baked and not overly sweet, this tart is a refreshing alternative to the DOME. The size is a little small for the price, with a shallow base. But for the taste I am willing to shelve out the moolah.SGD 4.80Instant coffee from illy, it wasn't too bad a coffee to enjoy.Service is generally good except for a grumpy staff (who was a little unfriendly) told me that if I was to see the entire selection, then I should be here early in the morning when they open. A sarcastic reply to what I deem as a innocent question of "Do you replenish your cakes when they run out? Cause i would like to check out the entire selection?"VERDICTSeating area is a bit limited in this area, so big groups of more than 6 might find it hard to get settings. Otherwise, this cafe is a pretty good place to chill out with friends over chatter and cakes. …Read More

Smitten Coffee and Tea Bar
2014-02-26
If you are looking for a quiet spot for good coffee this weekend, Smitten might be a good spot for you to drop by. With outdoor and indoor seating, I heard that they do fill up pretty fast over the weekends. Prices are pretty similar to industry players where we (4 of us) paid SGD 5 for a 6oz cup of espresso with milk.I like that it isn't too thin. Definitely a robust cup of coffee, a whiff to the coffee will definitely bring a small to your face. Ordered their affogato and it is pretty much a sweetened up caffeine shot which I enjoyed immersely. The espress shot is super "gao" (thick in hokkien) with the vanilla ice cream offsetting this otherwise bitter shot. Matcha Cake was a little expensive by still a treat for those who like their green tea to be a little sweet. I personally prefer the savor the natural bitter taste of Green Tea, so this cake didnt do it for me.***VERDICTDefinitely worth a return visit, the next time round I would like to pop by to try out their Sandwiches and savoury bites which doesn't exceed SGD 10. Definitely attractive in terms of pricing.Have fun savoring a cup of coffee @ Smitten!…Read More

BlackBall
2014-02-25
While on the lookout for something sweet, I decided to drop by Blackball's newest outlet which is located in Habourfront. With limited seating area of not more than 20, I decided to pack a bowl back home to be shared with Mr Heng, my forever food partner.Packed with ingredients, it is definitely a bowl which you should be sharing with friends! A mixture of taro balls, red beans, pumpkin and sweet potato balls atop slow grass jelly. You are giving a choice to have it as it is, or to add milk into the dessert to give it a milky creamy taste.I personally like mine with a bit of milk even though it is a little sinfulThe entire dessert is a little too sweet for me, so I guess the next time back I would ask for a "less sweet" option. The taro balls do come by a little too starchy, to the point where it doesnt really taste of yam. Quite a pity since yam chunks would have been awesome!***VERDICTThis is a ok place to head down for desserts if you have a sweet tooth! For me, I think I shall just stick to my favorite traditional dessert stalls in hawker centers. …Read More

A Fiery Meal
Tian Yi Dian Mala Xiang Guo - Koufu
2014-02-25
Mala Xiang Guo is one of the lastest food trend in town and it is little wonder to find one popping up near my office. A couple of my colleagues raved about this spicy dish and urge me to try it out, with a little reminder that I should go for the lessy spicy option when asked.Located in Anchorpoint's Koufu, you will be presented by a selection of meat, veggie and mushrooms. Price of the meal is decided by weight of the items that you have selected.SGD 1/ 100g of VegatablesSGD 2/ 100g of MushroomsSGD 2.80/ 100g of VegatablesSGD 3.80/ 100g of SeafoodI wasnt feeling too hungry so I had a mix of mushroom and vegetables which cost me SGD 4.80. I choose to have it less spicy and I am sure glad I did!It was comfortably spicy where you dont have keep chugging cups of water down to squench the fire on your tongue. It is fragrant and the peanuts and sesame sees added to the make definitely made it smell better. One of the tricks to having a cheaper bowl of food is to choose items which are much more light weight, e.g. Mushrooms or Kangkong which are pretty light items.***VERDICTDefinitely worth a trip down to try out this stall, especially if you are a spice lover. I like that idea of being able to choose my ingredients, which allows me to pile my bowl up with a whole lot of dietary fibre. ***…Read More

A trip down to punggol
Bacon and Booze
2014-02-25
Popped over at Bacon & Booze on a Saturday afternoon after finding them on the Entertainer App. Armed With a coupon for a 1 for 1 Main, we decided to grab the Crispy Fish Burger and the Chicken Cutlet. While waiting, we nursed a cup of cappucino which didnt turn out too bad despite its simple appearance. A quick glance around the place and we saw that it is very simply furnished with a loads of handmade decorations hung up the wall.Burger Combo: Battered fish topped with nacho cheese & bacon bits, stacked up on a healthy salad. Served with fries.Definitely a well battered fish which was fried till golden brown and served hot and cripsy when we bite into it. The salad gave the savoury dish a slight sweetness, giving it a balance of sweet and salty. Despite having bacon in their stall name, I certainly wasnt expecting the dried hard and overfried chewy bacon that was served with the dish. Fries were also pale yellow instead of golden brown, which a couple of minutes in the deep fryer could have solved.SGD 15Fried to perfection, chicken thigh in lovely golden brown breadcrumbs. Choice of teriyaki sauce or sambal chilli. Served with fries & side salad.A great dish, the chicken culet was served up as promised. The teriyaki sauce that came with the dish was pretty good as well. The only gripe was that is was a little too oily, and the matt plate which the dish was served on didnt do the appearance any favours.SGD 15VERDICTGiven the location, Bacon and Booze will probably be a spot which I would head to when I am looking for a place hangout with friends over beer, or if I am looking for a western food option at Pungol end. The food isnt mind blowing good for me to want to head down again, though the beer list does look promising for beer lovers.Definitely worth a try, but dont expect too much from this place :)…Read More
