Yen Yakiniku – Dedicated Service and Sinful Food
Yen Yakiniku
2015-07-06
Ann Siang Hill has gone through a revamp, with new joints stepping in and up! So when my dearest Agnes Lin (ex-boss, ex-colleague and friend) hunted me down for a dinner catch up with two other pals with her craving for Japanese food - I jumped to try Yen Yakiniku out!Key Takeaways:- Yakiniku means "grilled meat"- Quality food and great service which gives a wonderful and holistic dining experience (foodgasms included) - always comes at a pretty price.- Sake on a work night is never a good idea (If you are coming from Maxwell Market, it's past Scarlet Hotel and on the left at Ann Siang Hill.)Most places with this concept serves you the meat, grill and leave you to your own devices. But not here at Yen Yakiniku. That's the Owner and they've got 2 others on ground to manage this place. Each chef have the capacity to provide a dedicated service to 4-6people, inclusive or taking orders, providing recommendations and pairings, cooking, serving and interacting with you.And so, we got our own Chef looking after us the whole night.Does this mean they were in our conversations? Nope and here's why according to the Chef: the width of their cooking space plus the high table gives both parties (Chef and us) ample personal space yet just enough distance to have a conversation when needed. Though the night, it was apparent that our personal space wasn't breached. (You definitely need this space when catching up with bratty friends!)Let's look at the meat options we had first (since it's Yakiniku)! First up: Ox Tongue. First time trying Ox Tongue (I've not even tried Ox Tail Soup) and it was all I could do not to run out the door, screaming blasphemies. It was a "must-try" and fine, we went for it. Over at Yen Yakiniku, they use the better quality of meat which is from the deeper end of the tongue and not the tip.And boy-oh-boy, was it delicious! We were given a separate bowl where we had to squeeze some lime juice and told to dip these into the lime for the extra pow-wow. It was cooked to perfection (medium-well), with the chives, sesame seeds and homemade sauce. Look at that:Secondly, we got ourselves the Tenderloins. Chef said medium well and who are we to object. Heck, we even got a second round of these! And then we had another 2 more round of beef, Wagyu Oyster Blades and Beef Short Ribs. Both were cooked to the recommended levels by the Chef. With all that meat going on, we had to have some vegetables and glad we did (plus a O-Nigiri)! Over here, their vegetables are marinated with basic ingredients and also cook appropriately. For example their Asparagus together with seasonings inside was foil wrapped and cooked in an oven. And then we have the lovely Eringi Mushrooms which were "sauteed" on one side (only) over the grill. It was definitely silky smooth and enjoyable to the moon and back! By the way, was changed (the grill) at different stages of the night. The O-Nigiri was packed with salmon bites and rice. A nice carb addition (which was not needed at all) that we wanted to try out. Like their most of the other dishes, it was cooked over the Grill and served to us warm! While Henry and myself decided on the second round of Tenderloin, Agnes went for the Hokkaido Scallops. And according to her rave on instagram "Ended my dinner with a big fat HOKKAIDO SCALLOP. Last word to describe "heaven!""What's a night out with friends and no alcohol? Although we each had a drink to nurse into the night (Agnes with her Red Wine, Me with my White and Henry with the Plum Wine), it felt off without some Sake to go around to add to our dinner experience. Mostly cause Henry was compelling us to.And to end the night, we had Black Sesame Ice Cream! Surprisingly, it was on the house for us (we were also given a complimentary round of Kimchi at the start of the night)! Black Sesame Ice Cream, $18.Other reasons why I really did like this place:- 100% about service including their interior and restroom!- We didn't walk out smelling like smoke or meat.
- Empty on a weekday night, there was one other group of three peeps aside from our group. They have a crowd on Fridays and Saturdays, and only opened for dinner service. Our bill that night rang up to: $454.30We were poised while in the restaurant, said our thanks and waltzed out. The second we were out, we gasped at our little bleeding hearts (or wallets) but as we headed over to Indochine for another round of drinks, we agreed that every penny spent was worth it.My most expensive dinner to date, and it wasn't even a date!!(For more images and details: https://rekasg.wordpress.com/2015/07/05/yen-yakiniku)…查看更多

Brunch with Singapore's Best City Skyline
Procacci
2015-06-13
Why should you go for brunch at Procacci, Customs House (facing Marina Bay Sands)? Two words: The ViewCan you not see how happy I look?Happiness happens when you having brunch with fellow foodies before the stellar view of the latest City Skyline we've got in Singapore. It's a wonder how beautiful it was with a clear and sunny skies to give the surroundings a "glorious glow". Key takeaways:1) For a view like this, it's worth the effort to travel to Customs House2) Brunch can taste great even without meat or salmon3) May have found my ROM location (*mild panic*)Where is Procacci?Located before Singapore's winsome skyline, Procacci can be found at Customs House. I was not joking about the view!Who is Procacci?Procacci is an Italian brand brought in to Singapore by Caerus Holdings (who also owns Lady M). This only one in Asia as the other 2 Procacci are in Vienna and it's origin - Florence. Procacci owns Marchesi Antinori Wineyard = authentic Italian Wine and their own beer - Peroni. What did we eat?Brunch! They've just rolled out their Brunch menu in May, which is available from 11am till 2.30pm and I was there to sample 7 out of 10 dishes that is available. But not alone, together with 6 OpenRice members! We started off with 2 vegetarian plates (out of 5) - Uova Stapazzate con Funghi ($20) and Frittate al Tartufo ($22), plus the Pollo Grigliato ($20).We ate it all, and later requested for the group's favourite: Fritattate al Tartufo. What is it? A beautiful egg frittata on cibatta toast (which I simply loved) and the very-amazingly-smelling truffle cream. Wah-LAH! Can you smell it too (and can you see the reflection of the gorgeous skies on the glass top table)?Uvoa Stapazatte con Funghi is a hearty dish filled with scrambled eggs (yay!), saute mushroom, rustica toast and saute broccoli. Personally, I prefer the cibatta toast (served on other dishes) to the rustica. The eggs, mushrrom and broccoli came together for a complete vegetarian meal! Pollo Grigliato contained the grilled chicken breast, fried egg, crispy bacon and cibatta toast (yay!). I see eggs, I see bacon and I am happy.Next up:Fumo Salmone ($20), Salsiccia Italiano ($26) and Procacci Delizia ($30). What's going here? Yum yum yum SALMON!! Fuma Salmone is a smoked salmon dish with fried eggs, ricotta cheese and ciabatta toast. Salmon, cheese and cibatta toast (yay!) - awww, yummy! This was the 2nd favourite dish from us all.The Salsiccia Italiano a plate filled with grilled spicy Italian sausages, fried egg, rustica toast and arrabiata sauce. And that was one lovely sauce that brought the whole dish to a level up! This plate does (however) pale in comparison to the other 2 dishes (for me).Big breakfast Italian style? Procacci's got the Procacci Delizia - fully packed with mortadella, parma ham, taleggio cheese (WOW!), scrambled eggs, rustic toast. This dish is the most expensive on the current menu and with such a generous portion - you can definitely share it with someone. The Prosecco Surprise!Procacci surprised us with a glass of Prosecco each! We were surprised by the loud pop sound midway eating and the sweet sweet taste of the chilled wine. I love my white wine, Moscato and Prosecco (with cheese) and...I'm all set!Upon request, we had Uovo Benedetto ($22) which come with poached egg, caviar, crispy bacon and hollandaise sauce. There's something about poached eggs that everyone loves to slice open and watch the yolk spread out! The hollandaise sauce was just nice (quantity) and not overwhelming. Eggs poached to pretty-good-level and the bacon added the crisp to this plate.Drinks option: On regular basis (now included) you can enjoy free flow beverages inclusive of Prosecco, Peroni beer, soft drinks and juices for $35. If you to non-alcoholic it out on a Saturday, simply get the $15 free flow of soft drinks and juices for just $15. Procacci also offers other beverages such as tea and coffee on their menu. Now for some behind-the-scenes photos. (of OpenRice members taking photos of food and fooling around!Overall, I'd go again to enjoy the view with a good company of friends! Especially so for this month with their free-flow Prosecco going on at just $25 per person promotion. Violet Herbs - Fine Dining on a Budget
Violet Herbs
2015-05-26
A session at Violet Herbs for food tasting was definitely a highlight for that week! Overall, the flavours tried and tasted were new (atleast to my buds, my taste buds) and they stuck true to Herbs as per their name.Key takeaways:1) Good food comes with a price, but doesn't have to be overpriced.2) Passion always shows in your work - like this experienced couple delivering such interesting concoctions infused with herbs.3) Eggs poached for 1-hour are just WOW - lovely in colour, taste and richness.Located "diagonally" opposite Orchid Hotel and along along Tras Street (first after the grass patch) – so it’s easy to get to from Tanjong Pagar MRT Stations. This French feat Modern European (a course meal diner with ala carte options) was opened in Dec 2014 by local couple, Dani and Chef Edward (previously at The American Club Singapore, Fish Market & Bistro and Restaurant Ember) with more than 22 years of combined experience in F&B, Singapore. Because it was a tasting session, we were treated to 6 dishes of sample size and a surprise Amuse Bouche of Beef to start the ball rolling. The name itself amused me - my great inexperience showing as I drew blank and had to ask what was that?! The Amuse Bouche, according to Wikipedia, is a single, bite-sized hors d'œuvre and different from appetizers in that they are not ordered from a menu by patrons, but, when served, are done so free and according to the chef's selection alone. So, thank you Chef for serving up this aromatic dish. The beef was tender, easy on the palate and served with Madeira sauce and fried saffron strips. It was served with Saffron Bread which smelt so good and chewy in its thickness. First time trying a full-on Saffron Bread and it was delish!Next up – Mango Scallops served on Parsnip Puree topped with Mango Gel, a thin Potato Chip, Mango Salsa and Micro Herbs. I liked the Mango Salsa and the Gel is interesting (easily assumed as fish roe instead but it’s not).Parsnip Velouté. Parsnip… huh?! Velouté referes to thick soup. AH!!! And so, this dish was a nice thick, creamy soup that was smooth with fresh Sri Lankan crab meat and drizzled with herb oil, fresh herbs, chocolate soil (crumble) and edible flower petals. A very rich comforting dish with subtle flavours! Truffle Foie Gras, Braised Kurobuta Pork Belly and Marinated Red Miso Cod were the lined up mains for us to sample. And between the first 2 mains we were given a Yuzu Sorbet to help clear our palates. Pretty smart move as both the dished have very distinct flavours that stick to your senses. I enjoyed savouring the Truffle Foie Gras amongst the 3 mains. Accompanied with poached egg, poached for 1 hour egg which gave the yolk a strong, thick yellow/orange tint and the white was silky smooth. At the slice of the yolk, it blended well into the cepes reduction and summer black truffles. Summer Black Truffles which costs a pretty dime from what we heard! Check out that egg yolk below. The Braised Kurobuta Pork Belly has a high fat marbling and melts away in your mouth (atleast in mine!). Served with homemade herb fries, spicy blood orange sauce, asparagus and micro herbs – I was just glad we were sharing this richness. As I’m a confused fan of Seafood - the Marinated Red Miso Cod it was tender and not too sweet to me (only ‘cause I don’t particularly know how to enjoy fish) and of course… fishy. So you may want to check out the others' opinions on this dish.Bring on the dessert - Frozen Nougat for a bittersweet and cooling ending. Served with raspberry sauce, mixed fruits/berries, chocolate soil, crumbles and lychee sorbet – it was a refresh end to our beautiful tasting night at Violet Herbs. I wanted seconds of this!Final Verdict: I would go there again whenever I’m looking for interesting flavours aside from our day-to-day #nomnomnoms. (Also, to show-off my newly acquired knowledge.)Thank you #OpenRice & Violet Herbs for this session!…查看更多

Breakfast at Boat Quay, why not?
Harry's Boat Quay
2015-05-18
If you're in search of a place on the outskirts on town or at the CBD zone, Harry's Breakfast is an option not to be missed! At an alfresco along the Singapore River is Harry's, serving their recently launched breakfast from 8am till 10.30am daily. Personally, it was nostalgic to be at Boat Quay and peaceful in the mornings (especially on that Saturday we were there). And so, there we were! More than ready to dig into their 6 out of 8 dishes from their Modern European Comfort food for Breakfast - and boy, were we in for a treat on a Saturday morning!First came the Croissant Croque Monsieur! A buttery and soft alternative with the croissant - (apparently) was a new twist deviating from its traditional ways by Harry's. Filled with Ham and Cheese plus topped with béchamel sauce for a subtle sweetness, this dish was definately a favourite for me. It was chewy and almost melted in my mouth can?! There's also a Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs Croissant for those who'd prefer something aside to ham. Then came Assorted Muffins, 4 flavours were presented to us: Banana and Peanut Butter, Raisins and Walnuts, Granny Smith (Green Apple), and Raspberry with Cheese. Seems like they have them baked fresh daily and there're special flavours of the day which you can check with the staff. But I was happy with the selection presented to us! At $2.90 + Freshly Baked + Yummy Flavours = SOLD I learnt something new about how the cut of this bread slices is called Soliders when the Soft Boiled Eggs & Marmite Soldiers was brought to us. Served with soft boiled eggs in a separately ceramic bowl with cover - this is best eaten once served and definatley is scrumptious alternative for our regular half-boiled eggs! Also the Soliders were cheesy... I like Dig into the Chicken Pot Pie immediately once it's infront of you! The Chicken Pot Pie with its crisp exterior and creamy chicken interior is definately a one-plate wonder. The creamy chicken was surprisingly comforting on a fine Saturday morning. There's also Mushroom and Potatoes Velouté with Vegetables (option for Vegetarians).Lastly, the Fries up were served - Ham, Bacon and Mushroom Fry Up and the Vegetable Fry Up (option for Vegetarians). 2 sunny side ups with an assortment of ingredients and 2 slices of toasted sourdough bread (which we made into a heart-shape because it's what you do. Perhaps it was all the meat from previous dishes or perhaps one just needs their vegetable intake for the day, I seemed to prefer the Vegetable Fry Up with fine beans, mushrooms, peas and cherry (to-make-you-merry) tomatoes. Broke the egg yolks on the bread for a softer experience Harry's also has Harry's Champion Breakfast which has all-the-works with sausages, bacon, mushrooms, baked beans, eggs and toast - which we didn't get to try out. But look at all those that we did, there was definately no space left in the tummy zone! Another thing to note is... you can always add on "a little something for a heartier breakfast", ranging from meat options, Smoked Salmon, different types of toast or beans and mushrooms.Kudos to Harry's for launching Brunch - a very delicious one and tapping on their calming alfresco atmosphere. It's nice to have an uninterupted view at Boat Quay in the daytime (considering it's always been a place to hangout at night) with the lovely company of OpenRice members who enjoyed food and fun/funny conversations with So, yes. Yes, go and have your brunch there one of these days before it gets filled in, daily.…查看更多
