Xin Cuisine's Mooncake
Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant
2013-08-21
Was invited to the moon cakes food tasting by OpenRice at Xin Cuisine, Holiday Inn Atrium. A great hospitality to the guests from Holiday Inn as not only they provided the star of the night - moon cakes for the guests to try, there's also some really good bite size food available. Tried their signature roast duck, scallops, chicken roll and roasted pork. My favorite is definitely the roast duck as the meat is roast perfectly and the meat is so tender and soft. High possibility that I will be back for the sake of this roast duck dish. The roasted pork belly is done nicely too. Though I am not a fan of that but still, I think it is one of the best I had tried. One of the highlights of this food tasting is definitely the wines! We got the privileged to sample some really good red and white wine together with the moon cakes. I would say that my favorite is the Riondo Prosecco with its fruity and bubbly texture, pairing it nicely together with either the snow skin moon cakes or traditional moon cakes. Honestly this is the first time I tried the moon cakes from Xin Cuisine and it was good! Even better than the one I used to get from some other hotel. I love their custard egg yolk traditional moon cake. It is sweet and not too thick thus you don't feel very jelat after that. As for the snow skin moon cake, my favorite are the black sesame paste with peanut and chocolate and also the peranakan durian. Overall a enjoyable night with good desserts and wine and company!…Read More

Angie the choice with yam-flavoured cakes
Angie The Choice
2013-07-11
I love yam-flavored cakes and it's so rare to find in Singapore... So when I get to know that Angie the Choice has got this flavor on their shelves, I decided to get order that cake for my sibling's birthday. she was pretty happy with how beautiful the cake is and when we cut and tasted the cake, it taste really good! The yam paste in the cake is not very sweet and is recommended to elders at home who is has a strict diet but still wants to taste a bit of some sweet food. This will definitely be in my list if I were to get another cake for other occasions the next time.…Read More

Starbucks
Starbucks
2013-07-11
My favorite ice blended frappe among all other beverages sold in Starbucks, the Green Tea Ice Blended Frappe. I like the richness of Matcha (green tea) flavor in it which makes the whole drink very thick with the flavor. Blended with ice cubes and milk (Full cream milk the best!), the greenish cup of goodness is so hard to resist. This drink is suitable during hot and humid weather, not too sweet and definitely will cool you down without feeling more thirsty! …Read More

YUMMYLICIOUS FOOD!
Jamboree Bar & Cafe
2013-07-09
Introduced by my lovely colleagues, I decided to lunch here as I've heard about the really cheap and awesome food served here at Jamboree Bar. It is call bar with a reason cos the beer here is really indeed very dirt cheap. Cost only $4.90 from 11am - 6pm, not even $5! Happy hour wise is even more cheap than outside, it only costs $6! A place to consider to chill out after work!I had the Fish & Chips Set which comes with soup and drinks and guess what? It only costs $16! Note that the price is NETT, so you don't have to worry about 7% GST and 10% Service Charge even though the service is not up to standard. The fish and chips is beer battered and guess what? The beer taste is so fragrant and make the whole dish sweet! It is also very crispy yet soft inside and the combination is so yummy yummy! The soup wise is nice too! Add more pepper and salt for more flavors! Too bad it can't be refilled not I will definitely have many many many bowls of it! …Read More

Wintermelon milk tea... yucks.
BlackBall
2013-07-09
So I ordered this drink, Wintermelon Milk Tea from this outlet because I was thirsty. I was looking forward and expecting it to be something very milky yet refreshing (since wintermelon tea and milk tea are my favorite) but when I finally got my drink, the color looks like muddy water. I got a funny feeling about it and poke in my straw to have the first taste. It tastes nothing like a milky taste and instead what I am tasting is a super diluted winter melon tea with only 10% of milk in it (which explains the color). The large cup was filled to brim with the muddy water and I guess I can only finish like 1/15 of it and threw the whole thing away. I heard from my partner later that the person inside who was making the drink doesn't know how to make it! This was supposed to be one of the hot selling item and yet... I'll rather just spend $1 at Bugis Village to buy the diluted watermelon juice and it will still taste as good. …Read More

Yami is yummeh!
Yami Yogurt
2013-07-05
Yami Yogurt was introduced to me by a close friend of mine and since then, I got hooked to their delicious soft yogurt which taste like ice cream but is much more healthier than that. My favorite is their peach flavor, never fails to have that whenever I am craving for it. The peach flavor is not powering to cover the nature taste of the yogurt, though you can still taste the refreshing peachy flavor every spoonful. There are also numerous toppings of the yogurt for you to choose from, from dried nuts to fresh fruits. My favorite toppings is either the almonds nuts of mixed nuts. The toppings are surprisingly fresh too! No signs of "air" in them cos they are still as crunchy. Well, adding on an extra crunch to the soft yogurt is just so... attractive. …Read More

Fruit juice!
William's Rojak
2013-07-05
Other than Rojak, the fruit juice here is fresh and gao (thick). The aunties are friendly and always take your orders eagerly yet friendly, trying to avoid a long queue form. I also realized that the fruit juice prices is slightly cheaper than other fruit stalls in the same area. I like their orange and apple juice ($2) as they make it fresh in front of you and proving you they didn't add any sugar syrup prior to the juice. My fruit juice tasted really good and refreshing! Other than that you can also order a "Fruit mixture" juice and the auntie and dump any fruits which she got hold of into the blender and blend it for you. It cost $2 too. Hard to come by any fruit juice in Orchard which sells at $2 nowadays!…Read More

SUBWAY EAT FRESH!
Subway
2013-07-03
I was soooo happy when Subway open it's branch at Tiong Bahru Plaza, which means healthy sandwich is just within walkable distance! The subway is quite big, compare to other branches (with only the standing counter) and can sit up to maybe like 20-30 customers. The one and only sandwich I will order is definitely the oven roasted chicken bread, with honey oat bread. Their bread is made freshly everyday so I will not doubt the freshness of it. I am thankful that the sandwich artists are mostly friendly and listen well to your order (of veggies and sauce etc). However I have to remind them to give me more tomatoes not... they will just give like 3 pieces of it to your sandwich. I like how fresh and crunchy the vegetables as they make your sandwich more... crunchier with different kind of texture (bread, vegs, meat and finally bread again). I love to drench my sandwich with 2 types of sauce, mostly honey mustard and sweet onion. I hate to put onion in to my sandwich as it makes my mouth stink, so no onions for me. …Read More

DURIAN PANCAKES
Durian History
2013-07-03
Located just next to the crazy long queue money changer at Chinatown's People Park Complex, this has got to be the best durian pancake you ever get for just... $1.50 - $2. They even have the option of having the normal size one or, if you are feeling very 'durian-ish' that day, you can even upsize the durian pancake to the JUMBO size (which really is, very gigantic). I had the durian jumbo pancake one of cos, since their specialty is the local favorite, DURIAN. If you doesn't want your mouth to stink after savoring the pancake (or don't make it even more stinky from your original stinky mouth...) you can opt for the other exotic flavors available there. Go see for yourself and decide what you want!Anyway back to the pancake. The pancake skin is very extremely crispy! I don't know the super friendly lady boss do it but it just taste sooooo crispy till you can hear the "crack crack" sound when you bite into it. Not those very thick pancake skin you buy from outside, cos you will just taste the flour taste and not the star of the food, DURIAN. They are very particular about the quality of their durian used and will changed every now and then once there's negative feedback from their customers. At last a shop which listen to the feedback from the customers!Well for the durian used, I love it. It is not very sweet like other places (sugar added!) but tasted very natural and original. The durian smell is strong but yet it smell so good (and taste too!)Not a fan of pancake? Nevermind. They have durian tapioca (what!) too which taste as good. There's even all sorts of durian snacks available to satisfy your craving for durianssss!…Read More

Chicken Rice
Tiong Bahru Boneless Hainanese Chicken Rice
2013-07-03
This had got to be my number one chicken rice in Singapore. Don't ask me why if you think it's not nice but I guess it's the taste bud problem. I just simply think this is the best chicken rice. Specially visited this place to cure my cravings and of cos it's a half chicken affair. I love the rice so I will normally ordered to plates and finish them off.The white chicken is very extremely smooth and very juicy. I don't know how they make it in to so nice and the chicken flavors are being locked inside the tender meat. I like their way of serving the soup to their customers. It's a self service thing which you can refill your soup bowl as many times as you like and they will not show you nasty look (because they are busy you see... which shows how crowded it is)At the end of the day, if you think your mouth stinks because of the garlic chili (or some other factors which makes your mouth have a bad smell...) they do provide mentos to their customers which I think is very thoughtful to get rid of your foul mouth smell!…Read More

Bar chor mee
Ann Mushroom Noodles
2013-07-03
I had the bar chor mee at ann mushroom noodles stall located at pasir panjang. The friendly uncle behind the cooking counter hang a smile on his face all the time while doing his cooking. I had the mee pok dry version to dine in and the portion he given is big filled with many ingredients. I like the "al dante-ness" of the mee pok. The ingredients is fresh too.Other than bar chor mee, I heard that their fishball is fresh and "bouncy" too. I shall try that in near future when I visited there again.…Read More

soya bean drink
Ah Luck Bean Curd
2013-06-14
Who wouldn't want an ice cold soya bean drink on a hot sunny and humid day? If you happened to be around Tanglin Halt Market or anywhere in Commonwealth (just a 5 minutes walk from the train station) and you are feeling really thirsty, do drop by the market! I think Ah luck bean curd is the only stall selling authentic soya bean drink and chin chow drink all the way from morning to night (the extremely friendly stallowner told me that they open till 3am?!) I got myself a cup of soya bean drink and one sip at it, you can taste how flavorful it is and is definitely very authentic and have this "gu zao wei". The stall owner also tell me she's the second generation selling this and running the stall. What a hidden gem!…Read More

laksa laksa
Katong Laksa
2013-06-12
Thick coconut gravy. Smooth thick beehoon. Spicy balachan chili. Fresh ingredients. A perfect bowl of Laksa. Since there's a legacy on the laksa sold here along east coast road, joo chiat, it is time to check that out. There's 2 shop selling the same laksa, so... I decided to choose the one with further down the street. What was serve to me really pleased me a lot. The bowl is filled up with all my favorites I've listed and the smell of it is.... heavenly. Add more chili if you think the original bowl is not up to your spicy level. The gravy thickness is just nice, not too thick if not it will hard to drink. As usual, i drink all the gravy down at the end. It is good! …Read More

SHABU SHABU SHABU
Suki-Ya
2013-06-12
Who doesn't love a healthy Japanese style shabu shabu with free flow of meats? I do, of course. As a big fan of steamboat, Suki-ya is by far one of my favorite place to satisfy my craving especially during those evil rainy days and you desperately need something to hot to warm your grumpy stomach. I first discover Suki-ya at a corner of Marina Square, but too bad it has closed down due to renovation. But thank God they are expanding their business and there's a branch which is quite near to me, at Bugis+!So it is a serious affair between myself and Suki-ya. I walked in feeling very happy and immediately order 2 of my usual soup - the clear soup and kimchi soup. Though the kimchi soup does not taste spicy at all, I would still prefer it than their sukiyaki soup (not a fan of sweet soup). After that is the battle of picking my favorite sides and vegetables for the shabu shabu. Of course, Golden Mushrooms are something I will die for to have them put inside my pot of boiling soup. Followed by the Cheesy Cheesy Meatballs which the cheese will literally burst inside your mouth and burn your tongue if you are brave enough to pop the whole thing into your mouth. Finally, the meat. There's 3 meat to choose from - chicken, pork and beef. These meats are thinly sliced so that it will be cooked once you shabu it for like... 10 secs? But to play safe, it is good to cook the chicken and pork thoroughly to prevent you from having diarrhea for nothing. The ingredients are fresh and very worth the money. One can easily sit there and just eat the meat throughout without feeling guilty.…Read More

Scary crows
Wendy's
2013-06-12
It was a hot a humid day and I was feeling really hungry. The more humid the weather is, I will think about all the unhealthy food. Getting sick of the "M" fast food so I decided to walk over to Wendy's as it is within 5 minutes walking distance from the place I work. It was crowded as usual during lunch hour, with no available seats indoor all due to inconsiderate people leaving their whatsoever belongings on the table to "chop" it (Y they no use hand phones instead?!) and also chitty box people who sit there and chit chat till end of the world and no giving up their seats to poor hungry patrons like me. So, I have to take the outdoor seats where the nightmare is.As for the food, I ordered one of the most unhealthy food in the menu - DAVE'S HOT AND JUICY 1/2 POUND BURGER DOUBLE COMBO. The name itself is scary enough to scare all those slim girls but of cos, not me. Comes with 1/2 pound of beef patty, Fries and Drinks. The burger is very juicy and difficult to eat (cos of the size) and I have to take out one meat patty before continue to munch of my burger. I like the fries as it is very different from the "M" fast food. There's even potato skin on it to make it more "real" like hand cut fries. Nothing special about the drink as it is just the normal coke. Now for the nightmare. As you know orchard is well known for the.... birds flying around during evening hour. But I never know that the place is infested with CROWS. Scary crows to snatch your food with you! Once the diners finished their food and if there's any leftover... THE CROWS WILL ATTACK THE FOOD SHAMELESSLY. I have to be careful not to be their next prey once they finished off the first table, and instead of enjoying my burger happily, I have to eat real fast and escape from the scene. I hope that the management can do something the crows issue cos it is really very unhygienic and traumatic. …Read More
