Fu Jian Mian
Ming Kitchen Seafood
2013-08-31
This plate of Fu Jian Mian is not your typical white fried hokkien mee. This Fu Jian Mian at $4, is stirred fried yellow noodles (flat kind) with dark sauce, pork slices, vegetable, fish cake and prawns. Since I was craving for prawns, I specially ordered one with only vegetables and prawns. The dark sauce was slightly salty, but that’s usually the case when it comes to the gravy for noodles. Prawns were not overcooked and it has already been peeled for you. …Read More

Nice and bitter chocolate tart
PAUL
2013-08-31
I had wanted to visit Paul during one of the lunch hours but after looking at the menu, my friends decided that it was too expensive to dine there during meal times so we said to head back for desserts instead! We went after our movie and it was quite late already, around 9plus. However there were still some people queuing, but I saw that there were quite a lot of empty seats outside. So we took the seats outside. Because we came rather late, most of the signature cakes and pastries were sold out. We asked for some recommendations and we got Pomme-Cassis ($8.50) and a chocolate tart (Tartelette chocolat, $6.50). GST and service charge prevails but plain water is complimentary. The first bite down on Pomme-Cassis was just sour. It has caramelised apple slices in between the two layer of sponge cakes. I wasn't very impressed by it due to the first bite. Cakes are supposed to be sweet! Maybe this dessert requires more than just one bite to fully appreciate the taste. I wonder why it was recommended though. The chocolate tart was great! I enjoy my chocolate to be slightly more bitter and thus this suits my taste. Not recommended for people who dislike bitter chocolate though. The crust of this tart was awesome! I don't think it was baked hours prior to us eating it but the crustiness of the crust was maintained quite well. …Read More

Smoked duck pasta
49 Seats
2013-08-31
I walked past there at around 6pm and surprisingly there was no one at all. So my friend and I were the first customers. I didn't like it that the lights were so dimly lit (around that time) and it sort of affected my mood for dinner already. I shared the mushroom soup with my friend and it tasted not too bad! I love the garlic bread though, it's nicely toasted :) I ordered the creamy smoked duck spaghetti ($10.50) and as a person who does not like/eat creamy based pasta frequently, I must say this one at 49 seats is really not bad. I didn't feel sick of it after a few mouthfuls, which is a good sign that this is a good cream-based pasta. The only grip I had about this dish was that the amount of duck meat was too little and my pasta was too much. The interior of the café wasn't too bad, but as I mentioned earlier, there wasn't much lighting when I was there and I didn't like the metal chairs also. But we had friendly service from the staff! …Read More

Grilled dory
Han's Cafe
2013-08-31
I ordered the Grilled Fish Dory set at S$9.80 it comes along with 1 soup of the day and 1 drink and also Aglio Olio with Bacon at S$11.80.For the grilled fish, the fries was crispy and nice, but the coleslaw was pretty average. The dory fish wasn't too bad but a little too dry, probably grilled for too long. If you're cream-based soup lover, you will love this mushroom soup! It also comes with garlic bread. The ice lemon tea was refreshing and nice. The Aglio Olio was too oily, the olive oil taste was overwhelming and was a little too spicy. Definitely not worth the second try. However bacon was not too bad as it’s slightly crispy. Waiting time and seats: I went at about 12.30pm on a weekday, the working crowd that filled up the restaurant, finding tables for small groups(2-3people) isn’t an issue, but for larger group (4 and above) you might want to consider arriving earlier. Waiting time for order to be taken was quite fast (about 5mins) despite having queue with estimated 10 people in front. Waiting time for main course to be ready takes about 10mins. …Read More

Nice biscuit
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
2013-08-31
I ordered a Sunday’s deal, 3 piece tender chickens and biscuit with additional add-on of coke and Cajun Fries. Personally I didn’t like the chicken as it was rather bland, the crust wasn’t crunchy enough and was rather dry. The Cajun fries was normal but not comparable to McDonalds/A&W curly fries or long john silver fries. I think the only thing that was special and nicer was the biscuit, however I feel that the biscuit could have been better with fillings (e.g. strawberry, chocolate) in it as it was rather hard to eat the biscuit with the jam given. There's also daily deals at $3.90 with add-ons at $1.50, up to a maximum of 3. …Read More

One of the better and cheapest economic rice
Economical Rice - Food Court 2
2013-08-31
*Note that this stall is not closed yet! But it will probably not be operating during SP's upcoming school holidays*This is probably the cheapest mixed vegetable rice store within Singapore Polytechnic itself. I ordered 1 luncheon meat, 1 vegetable, 1 steam egg, fried fish with tomato gravy, rice and soup of the day (corn with carrot soup) at S$2.30. You are allow to scoop the soup of the day for free (they offer different soup everyday). Personally I loves their luncheon meat, steam egg and the soup of the day. The thickness of the luncheon meat was just right and it’s crispy outside. The steam egg was smooth and simple. I have never fail to finish up their soup of the day (they have corn soup, watercress soup, seaweed with egg and more), example for their corn with carrot soup, the taste was just right and the carrots were soft. As for their vegetable and fried fish, I would say it’s pretty normal. I've previously tried their curry chicken, and I would say it's not bad. For curry chicken and one other veg, it only costs $1.70, with rice. But do take note of the long queue during lunch hours. …Read More

Great toast
Killiney Kopitiam
2013-08-31
After my language lesson nearby, my friends suggested eating here for dinner. Surprisingly, there's not much people at around 6.30pm and it was great because we want to avoid the crowd. I supposed its location is not very near to the mrt station, which is why there's not much people despite it being dinner time. Head to the counter to order your food and it will be sent to you shortly!I ordered the toast ($2, $1 for 1 toast) to share with my friend. I supposed by 1 toast, they mean one slice of the thick bread. It may look little but it's actually quite filling. At first I thought I've eaten French toast because there's quite a strong smell and taste of egg in the bread, but it's actually the kaya! One of the better toasts I've eaten so far. The bread is toasted to "not-too-dry" which is exactly what I like!! It leaves behind some softness of the bread after some toasting. Do give the toast a try! It left quite a deep impression on me. Ordered the curry chicken with prata ($6.50) as well. The curry chicken was a little spicy for me (I don't take much spicy food). It has 3 chicken parts, and 2 halves of a potato. I think the portion was quite big, probably because I had the toast before this. I suggest sharing with your friend if you're having this not as a meal. The potato was slightly hard, the meat was probably cooked for too long. The curry was not bad, but it lacked freshness. I still think the toast was the best! …Read More

Chicken cutlet
Taiwan Delight - Koufu
2013-08-31
I ordered XXL chicken set A at price of $3, and it came along with 1 mini Taiwan sausage, vegetable in dark braised sauce, 1 braised hard boil egg, 1 chicken culet and rice. I am not a fan of Taiwan sausage therefore the aunty replaced it with another egg. The XXL chicken culet is even better than some I've eaten outside. It is freshly fried, crispy with some seasoning powder and chilli powder sprinkled on it. For $3, it's quite worth it as there's so many things in one set to try! There's also other similar set meals available as well. …Read More

Ban mian
Ban Mian - Koufu
2013-08-31
The ban mian ($3, dry one costs $3.50) that this stall sells is not too bad! The noodles are very chewy and springy! Even though I took quite long to finish up my meal as I wasn't hungry, but the noodles did not thicken/expand much! There's generous amount of pork, vegetables and egg in it as well. The dry one is the same, without the soup, but with black sauce instead. Do add some shallots and ikan bilis for more flavour!…Read More

Vegetarian!
Vegetarian Food - Food Court 2
2013-08-31
I ordered bee hoon with zai er, potato wedges, fried egg for $2.30. The zai er was crispy, nice and was in small square pieces, definitely one of the better zai er among the vegetarian stores (as most stores zai er appear in large rectangle shape and it’s not crispy as they store them in containers). The potato wedges was pretty normal. Beside bee hoon they also do offer yam rice, rice, fried maggie noodles. Do give their curry a go too, it's not too bad for a vegetarian stall. …Read More

Chocolate tart
MU Parlour
2013-08-28
Nearly missed this little café while walking around Holland after dinner. It has a little sign to indicate that it's on the second level, easy to miss it though. I've heard from my friends that it's well known for burgers but didn't try it because I already had dinner! My friends and I were just there to have some desserts. It was so hard to choose which tart/cake to buy because all of them looks so good! So we asked for some recommendations and the staff there recommended chocolate & salted caramel tart ($8) and also the carrot cake ($6). There was also a buy 1 get 1 free for 3 of the tarts but we thought it will be too much for us so we did not get, but I think it's quite a steal! The chocolate tart blew me off totally. It has a really good combination of bitter and sweet from the chocolate. Personally I prefer my chocolate bitter with a tinge of sweetness and this one was just right for me! I just couldn't get enough of it! The crust was well done too. I didn't find the carrot cake as exemplary as the chocolate tart like how my friends raved about it. I think it's because I had the tart which has a stronger taste and that covered the milder taste of the carrot cake. But the carrot cake was quite moist, not the dry kind. Seats are not in abundance at MU Parlor but definitely a good place to chill out with your friends over desserts. We got a table overlooking the streets of Holland Village. Plain water is complimentary but self service. There's large communal table as well, I think it can seat up to 10 pax. Funnily, MU Parlor does not charge GST but service charge instead. We spent $15.40 in total, inclusive of GST. …Read More

Steamboat
Coca Restaurant
2013-08-28
After staying at RWS for one night, my friends and I decided to have our lunch at Coca, which seems to be newly opened! And for $18.90++ (student price, valid for weekdays only), I think it's quite worth it, since it's a buffet! We didn't have to queue very long even though we reached around 1pm, we got seats immediately. There wasn't much variety on the lunch menu that we can choose from, so a lot of food were repetitive for us. Fish Ravioli is quite nice though, good to try. For the meats, not sure if it's the meat or we did not cook long enough, it tasted very soft and jelly, so we stopped ordering that after one round. Prawns are quite fresh as well, we ordered quite a lot of that and saw other tables ordering that too. Taste-wise, the food was okay. Soup base was just normal as well. I like that the table was quite big to place all of the plates of food that we ordered. Service was not very efficient as we had to wait very long to get attention from the staff just to refill our water. Sometimes we even had to remind them that we need our water to be refilled! But our order came quite fast though. We also had to call for our bill twice also. One of the staff was quite rude during payment as she insisted that we should have told them beforehand that we were students and that she had already keyed in the amount to the register. Anyway the payment took around 10mins, it was very slow!…Read More

Cookie monster in a cupcake
Loui's NY Pizza Parlour
2013-08-27
Loui's Pizza Parlour is always a place I'll go to for my meals whenever I'm in USS. It has good and affordable meals that caters for the young and old as well. Although it's still quite pricey but in a tourism attraction like USS, I say it's affordable because the food can really make one full! It was public holiday so USS was extremely crowded. But Loui's Pizza has many seats to cater to the crowd and we made do with one outside. The queue for the food was long as well, I waited around 20mins. I had the pasta ($11.90) which comes with a huge sausage and also a cookie monster cupcake ($4.90)! The spaghetti was quite normal, nothing much to rave about but I was so hungry I ate everything up. The german sausage was nicely cooked as well. The cute cupcake that I could not resist buying was surprisingly as good as it looks. Although a little sweet but I love the chocolate cupcake! The cookie on top was nice too.Don't bother getting drinks. They're really expensive. There's water coolers throughout the whole park. …Read More

The Manhattan FISH MARKET
2013-08-27
Ordered Feeesh n Cheeese ($13.95) for dinner with my friends. Actually this dish is actually same as Manhattan fish and chips, just that for the fries, they added cheese to make it cheese fries. Anyway so I realised I paid $2 more just for the cheese. :( I really love the dory fish though! It's well marinated and still succulent. Be sure to squeeze some lemon over the dory fish for some extra taste! There's too much fries for me though, fried fish and fries, too much fried stuff for me. But if you enjoy eating fish and chips, manhattan fish market do have really good and affordable ones! The salad didn't have much dressing so I didn't finish it as well. I asked for extra tartar sauce and chilli sauce for the fries and fish. Service was quite efficient despite being full house and a long queue waiting outside. …Read More

Western delight
Pasta & Grill - Koufu
2013-08-27
One of my favourite stalls in SP, this stall sells really affordable pasta+western food and it's super nice!! I ordered the $3.50 grilled dory fish. It has a big slice of dory fish, spaghetti and potato salad. It comes with a small bowl of mushroom soup as well. For both the fish and spaghetti, you can choose your own sauce, tomato, black pepper or mushroom! I had mushroom for my fish, and tomato for my spaghetti. The mushroom soup and the sauce might taste similar but the sauce is slightly thicker than the soup. The dory fish was really well marinated and it's very succulent despite being grilled. You can also top up $0.50 to add more spaghetti, wedges or baked beans etc. …Read More
