Haato & Co.
Haato & Co.
2013-08-29
It was not easy to decide what to order because there were so many yummy options! Eventually, we ordered a Chocolate Fudge with Marshmallows ($8.50) to share. The presentation of the waffle look so attractive we could not wait to dig in!It is alfresco seating at Haato & Co and the wind kept the chocolate sauce that we were supposed to drizzle on the waffle flying. Nevertheless, we managed to devour this divine waffle without making a mess. The waffle was crusted on the outside and soft on the inside, making a perfect combination with the vanilla gelato. However, we felt that the gelato melted too quickly. We only left the place after a good solid 3 hours and that was probably the longest time I have ever sat down with friends by the riverside with some good waffles.…Read More

Kith Cafe
Kith
2013-08-22
Exams are over and the holidays are finally here! Met up with Hui Yin and Celine for brunch at Kith Cafe on a Monday morning. Yes, a Monday morning! The luxury of waking up on a weekday for brunch simply spells awesome.Looking at the handwritten menu on their chalkboard wall and deciding what to eat.Toast with poached eggs - $7.50Despite knowing that their Big Breakfast is highly raved, we decided to just have toast with poached eggs because we have never tried poached eggs (or simply because we wanted to leave room for desserts) before!Took this picture before we added a dash of salt and freshly ground black pepper to our poached eggs. Look at that golden goodness flow and those grill lines on the toasts! And then when you dab the toast with the runny egg yolk, oh goodness gracious me, that morsel just taste so good. Not to mention, the toasts went very well with the cold butter. The cafe was rather empty when we reached at about 11am. We soon found ourselves to be surrounded by Caucasians and their kids when it hit noon. Kith Cafe seems to be a favorite with the expats. Great location to chill out with friends, food are served at affordable prices and without GST and service charge, who wouldn't like the place?…Read More

The Fabulous Baker Boy
The Fabulous Baker Boy
2013-03-15
For full review, please visit: http://gastronomicalbliss.blogspot.sg/2012/12/the-fabulous-baker-boy.htmlI was supposed to meet Vanessa and Yong Lin for brunch at Rider's Cafe but (I woke up late) we had a change of plans and decided to meet for desserts at The Fabulous Baker Boy instead. Expect to dine al fresco style because there are only 3 counter seats indoors. Initially, we were afraid that it would be warm but it turned out to be quite cooling. Hurray!Just look at all those cakes on the cake stands. So tempting! FYI, these were not all that they were serving, there were some more cakes in the fridge so do check out their fridge as well when you are there!Big Lub's Carrot Cake - can't remember the priceThis was our favourite. I like how it is full of raisins, dried fruits and nuts! It is like eating an energy bar but a moist cake version. I thought everything, from the coconut slices to the cream cheese frosting was just nice and complement each other so well. Green Tea Cake with Almond Praline - $7.50The green tea butter cream was so good that Yong Lin couldn't stop eating it and the butter torte was so fluffly! Ab Fab Red Velvet Cake - $8.50I would say that their red velvet cake hit the spot but Vanessa and Yong Lin think otherwise. They commented that the cake tastes normal to them. Then again, it is a personal preference. I wouldn't mind going back again for their cakes or even try their lunch/dinner menu items. The place is pretty laid back and good for catching up with friends over delectable desserts. …Read More

Grin Affair
Grin Affair
2013-03-15
While I was researching on how to get to the internship company which I was suppose to have interview with, I was thrilled to know that Grin Affair is in close vicinity!Grin Affair specializes in jar cakes and the first time I had some was on my 20th birthday this year. Glenn knows that I have been wanting to try their cakes so he surprised me with two jars that day! <3 He bought me Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut flavors. But I kinda forgot how they taste like so I decided to pop by Grin Affair after my internship interview! I was a little too early when I reached (about 11am) because they only open for business at 12 noon. But I must be in luck that day because Grin Affair opened (while I was still lingering around and waiting for my bus) shortly after! First customer of the day is me. YAY!Grin Affair promotes recycling so you are more than encouraged to return your jar to get a ticket! You can accumulate your tickets and redeem those items. Other than the jar, the string can also be reused. Check out these nice packaging for the jar lids!Dark Chocolate - $5.50 (4.5/5)Grin Affair only accepts cash so I put together all the loose change I had and bought a jar. It was a treat to myself after my internship interview, even though Glenn said I should only celebrate after I am being accepted into any of the companies. Haha! Ok la I admit, I just want to eat. No other reasons.I thought the amount of sea salt dulce de leche was just nice and I was literally scraping the dark chocolate mousse down to its last bit. Mmmm so goooooood. I'll pop by again soon to try other flavors!…Read More

Porn's
PORN'S
2013-03-13
After a day of shopping at Bugis, we were contemplating between Porn's and Itacho Sushi for dinner. Decided on Porn's!Cha Yen - $3.90 (4/5)So for the iced lemon tea lovers, this iced tea is a milk tea, not lemon tea. The tea is much sweeter than our standard milk tea, so people with a sweet tooth would probably find this to their liking.Tom Yum Gai - $8.90 (5/5)Looks like some herbal chicken soup, no? It doesn't look spicy at all, right? Don't judge a soup by its colour! Those with a low tolerance for spicy food will definitely miss out on this awesome soup. This soup is a flavour burst! Sour when you first taste it, sweet after the sourness subsides, then the spicy-ness kicks in.Pad Thai Talay - $10.90 (4.5/5)DIY Pad Thai! Don't like spicy? Like spicy? Don't like peanuts? Like peanut? Add in your preferred amounts. The Pad Thai is light and not oily, which is how a Pad Thai should beGreen Curry with Chicken (Gang Kaew Gai) - $10.90 (5/5)The tender slices of chicken that came with it were succulent and the brinjal seems to have absorbed the sweetness of the curry and were very soft and juicy. The curry was quite thick, but as the dish got colder, it got a wee bit watery. No issues there though, still as delicious, especially when paired with rice.Despite the fact that the restaurant was almost full, and there were only 3 waiters, the service was very prompt and our food arrived in less than 20 minutes from the time we ordered. Porn's is definitely worth the try!…Read More

The Coastal Settlement
The Coastal Settlement
2013-03-13
The Coastal Settlement has been on my list for quite some time but I haven't had the chance to visit it because it was really out of the way. But because Glenn was booking out (for the first time since his 2 weeks of confinement), I took the opportunity to bring him along to check out this place!Unless you drive, the only bus service that operates along the road is 29. The Coast Salad - $16 (5/5)THAT SAUCE IS PERFECT. It is somewhat similar to the Yu Sheng sauce, with a slight nutty taste. Everything in the jar tasted so good with it! The cocktail prawns were so fresh and the small strips of pork complements it so well. Even Glenn, who isn't a vegetable lover, finished most of it. Truffle Mushroom Fettucine - $21 (4.5/5)I like that the truffle oil is not overpowering, yet strong enough for me to taste it. The shaved parmesan cheese blended in quickly as I mixed everything. The mushroom also tasted really flavorful! Even though I'm quite a mushroom lover, I'm not a cream based kind of person, so the dish was wiped out with the help of Glenn. Prawn Aglio Olio with XO Sauce - $22 (4/5)From the way Glenn finished this dish when I was only halfway through mine (or maybe because army has trained him to finish his food fast), it must be really delicious. But Glenn says that the dish was rather okay though the prawns were really huge and fresh. Nothing to pick about the service here, or maybe it was because there were not much patrons at the time we were there. But nevertheless, we were pretty impressed with their service. What more could we ask for about the ambiance? We could stay there the whole day! This is truly one of the place that we would recommend our friends to come. …Read More

Little Part 1 Cafe
Little Part 1 Cafe
2013-03-12
This week, we visited Little Part 1 Cafe which is tucked away in Jasmine Road.Honey Roasted BBQ Ribs - $22.90 (3.5/5)So, my friend was instantly attracted to the ribs when he first saw the menu. He mentioned that the ribs were very tender and succulent, but the taste of the sauce reminded me of fried pork paste which can be a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. If you like fried pork paste like him, the sauce will taste awesome. But on the other hand, it's supposed to be Honey BBQ Ribs so we have no idea why it would taste like canned food. Fish & Chips - $18.90 (2.5/5)I decided to order the Fish & Chips as it was the cheapest in the menu (typical me ). First bite into the fish, it tasted alright, but then it tasted slightly fishy to me. I didn't manage to finish my food in the end. The cafe's atmosphere was homey and cosy, much like Kombi Rocks. Oh and if you prefer to dine in alfresco, do check out their outdoor seating at the back.…Read More

Chisozanmai
Chiso Zanmai
2013-03-12
My friend asked me out for a Japanese buffet lunch date at Chiso Zanmai two days after she got back from her school trip to Japan. Only been back in Singapore for two days and she is already missing Japan food! This girl ah. Greeted by the dessert counter when we entered! We didn't try their shizuoka oden because they didn't look that appetizing. We tried their ramen, and totally regretted our choice. No doubt the pork slices were quite decent, the rest of the ramen was just ... meh. The broth was too soupy and noodles too soft. It was as though we were having maggie mee instead of ramen. Chiso Zanmai is also slow in refilling the food. Their cold counter (consists of salad and some seafood) was rather empty when we went back for our 2nd round. We were there on a Tuesday and that probably explains the small crowd that day.Their matcha tofu was so goooood we had a few more pieces.Overall, the staff were efficient in clearing our plates (maybe a little too enthusiastic at the same time) and we thought Chiso Zanmai is actually quite a good place for birthday celebrations if you are looking for a restaurant that won't burn your pocket and has ample space for large group gatherings.I heard they serve sashimi for the dinner buffet, do check it out if you love your sashimi!…Read More

Menya Musashi
Menya Musashi
2013-03-12
The Star Vista is simply a food haven! Made a second trip there for Menya Musashi because there was a loooooong queue the first time we went! And also because it is highly raved by many others! The outlet at Star Vista is pretty small and the seats are very near to each other. So for those who value privacy, this might not be an ideal place for you. Personally, I don't really like to be seated so close to others. :/ But since we were just there for a quick lunch, I just had to make do with it.If you are lucky to be seated near the kitchen, you can see the preparation of your food (or the handsome/serious faces of the chefs) hahaha. And at Menya Musashi, you get to choose from 3 choices of soup base: White, Black or Red.White Cha Shu Ramen - $12.90 (4/5)I prefer my ramen in pork bone broth and did I mention I am a big fan of thick soup base? Don't be fooled by the broth which looks soupy here! It's actually quite thick and I really like it. Not only did the broth taste nice, the cha shu slices were tender and they literally melt in your mouth. Totally orgasmic! Noodles were firm and chewy too. What's a good bowl of ramen without ajitsuki tamago!? The egg yolk was not as runny as I had expected it to be, but it was still quite good. There you have it, a big bowl of comfort food on a rainy day. Perfect. Black Kakuni Ramen - $14.90 (4.5/5)Before I could take a proper and unmessy picture, my friend already started on his ramen. I guess that's how good his ramen was! Bokuto Gyoza - $5.90 (4/5)There is just something very different (in a good way) about their gyozas that I simply cannot fathom. We felt that the skin of the gyozas are thinner than the other gyozas we tried before, and the fillings are much different too. Service wise, the staff were really enthusiastic about refilling our cups of water even though we just took a few sips. And in case some of you are unaware, it is acceptable and considered polite to slurp your noodles in the Japanese culture. So don't be shy, go ahead and slurp your ramen!…Read More

Qing Tian Cold & Hot Desserts
Qing Tian Cold & Hot Dessert
2013-03-12
Honeydew Sago (5/5)While my friend was queuing for desserts, I was deeply amused by the uncle at the stall whose actions fit to the techno music that was playing. His actions all got tempo! Plus, his stall plays Hokkien songs, perfect for my friend who loves Hokkien songs. Haha!Qing Tian's Honeydew Sago is much sweeter and ..... You know it's really good when we finished everything and what left us is a SHIOK feeling. I bet the rest of the desserts are equally nice, if not why got long queue!!! …Read More

Next Door Deli
Next Door Deli
2013-03-12
My friend and I decided to have lunch at Next Door Deli on a Sunday afternoon. We reached there pretty late, but because they were having a 20% discount for their Tea Time orders from 2pm to 5pm, we were in for a treat! Trying to split the bill amongst yourselves? Save the hassle as you pay individually when you collect your food. Yes, it is self service and therefore no service charge! Plus, there are no phoney GST charges, which means what you see is what you pay. ^.^Organic Spagehetti with Meatballs - $7.80 (4/5)The highlight of the dish is probably the meatballs. Trust me, they are not your typical IKEA meatballs. These are infused with diced carrots and celery, and they tasted really organic. I would definitely go back for their meatballs if I wasn't living so far away!Crispy Grilled Chicken Steak - $7.80 (4/5)It seems to me that they also made the mashed potato themselves. I didn't expect the grilled chicken to be that tender and juicy. And would you believe it, it wasn't even oily! Great for health conscious people, like me. Margarita Chiffon Cake - $2.20 (4/5)This is the highly raved dessert at Next Door Deli. Initially, I had very low expectation of the cake because it looked plain and similar to pandan cake. But then again, never judge a book by its cover! After we were done drizzling the lime-infused tequila over the cake and sprinkling it with sea salt, the Margarita Chiffon Cake was ready to be savored! This is one of those things that made the both us go "mmmmm" as the delightful taste came as a surprise. Enough said, this is a must try!Sea Salt Brownie Popsicle with Vanilla Ice Cream - $2.90 (3/5)As good as it may seem to be, the brownie was actually rather dry and both of us didn't like it at all. :(Both of us agreed that the staff are really efficient and helpful! One of them even came up to have a small chat with us and it wasn't even awkward. Guess that's the perk of eating in a neighborhood huh. And guess what, Pine Garden Bakery is just next door! The cakes on display look really gooooood.Next Door Deli is a pretty good place for meals that are worth your every penny.…Read More

Kombi Rocks
Kombi Rocks
2013-03-12
Kombi Rocks serves Thai fushion food and if you're wondering, yes, the owner has a huge collection of Volkswagen Kombi and Beetles. Stepping into the cafe will instantly take you back to the 60s with their decor, a good place to bring your parents to reminiscent about the past.Kombi-nation Platter (4 pax) - $30 (4/5)The platter consists of thai fishcake, prawn roll, smoked duck, spicy vermicelli with shrimp, and crabmeat omlette. Initially, we were worried that we would not be able to finish it as it was a dish for 4. But we did finish it, which goes to say something about the serving size. Hmm...Crabmeat Fried Rice - $12 (3.5/5)Seeing that there were quite a few choices of fried rice on the menu, I asked the waiter/chef for his recommendation of the best selling one and he suggested Crabmeat Fried Rice. Okay, sounds interesting. But the result was just ... average. Best thing about this place is the ambiance I guess. There were only three groups of people when we were there. Service was prompt (could be due to off peak hours though) and guess what, the waiter is also the chef!Regrettably, the same cannot be said for the rest though.…Read More

The Loft Cafe
2013-03-12
Decided to pop by The Loft Cafe after accompanying a friend to collect her films at Lomography.I was immediately attracted to the light and space and all. The kind of place that people would want to linger. The Loft Cafe is located on the 2nd level and on the 3rd level they have a function room called Mo.Xa.Ic Room which can host up to 70 people. It is also fully equipped with audio visual equipment! Nutty Banana Waffle - $8.00 (3/5)It was mid day when we reached the cafe. Nothing better than some desserts to perk us up! Bananas taste good with anything, but the waffles on the other hand was nothing to shout about, and it was not as warm as we expected.Shibuya Toast - $8.50 (3/5)Came to know that their Shibuya Toast is one of their signature dishes so we just had to order it! The presentation of the Shibuya Toast was so visually appealing that the both of us did not bear to eat it. Ah, but the taste was so-so. My friend and I spent almost 4 hours there without ordering anything else and the waitress was kind enough to constantly refill our water. The ambiance of the cafe more than makes up for its average food. It is a great place to sit and catch up with friends for hours without being pressured to leave.…Read More
