Lovely Fries!
Everything with Fries
2015-02-08
I was strolling inside Orchard Central when I found this fast food restaurant that was crowded with youngsters. I thought why not give it a try since it was loved by many people. Btw, Everything With Fries or EWF is a fast food restaurant that serves mostly burgers and fries. They also sell desserts but I wasn’t in the mood for something sweet. For my dinner, I decided on the EWF Super Burger (meal) ($11.90++) which was kind of mehhh. The bun was pillowy but I would like it better if it was a bit crispy. On the other hand, the meat was quite burnt so it was a little bit bitter. AND no, it wasn’t juicy at all. I was so grateful that I ordered the meal one as the Barbecue French Fries was lovely. It was seasoned greatly, crispy, and thinly cut. It was a decent finger food. While the burger was disappointing, I was satisfied with the Barbecue French Fries. Next time, I’m just going to order the French Fries.www.nonatukangmakan.com…Read More

Desserts to Impress
Craftholic meets Kki
2015-02-05
Kki Sweets, located at School of The Arts, is a cake shop and/or a café that specializes in Japanese inspired French cakes. The café was very charming. It was decorated with clean and sophisticated wood furniture. The café is not only filled with stunning furniture but it also serves such mouthwatering desserts.Cakes1. Antoinette ($8.80++) - White Chocolate Mousse and MangoThe softest cake ever. It’s like I was eating some foam and the sweetness was just right. I don’t usually eat mango (except for mango pudding) but this one is really good. You can’t beat the taste of this appealing teardrop shaped dessert.2. Nao ($9.80++) - Strawberry Mousse with PistachioEnchanting pinky cylinder shaped cake. That is the only description that I can give as my sister and my brother in law finished this cake without leaving any crumb. It’s like they can’t stop eating it. My brother in law said that the strawberry flavor was quite strong and delightful. It was not extremely sour.3. Mont Blanc ($9.80++) - Chestnut Paste with Fresh Creme on Almond Tart BaseThe outside was crunchy but soft (if you know what I meant) and the crème was very light. This cake was equally pleasurable as the previous ones but I would not say it was at completely different level. Maybe because I tasted Antoinette before this and it was breathtaking.4. Ananas ($9.80++) - Pineapple Mousse on Almond Tart BaseThe pineapple gave out an intense aftertaste. So sour! But I like the pillowy texture.5. Onigiri ($9++) - Basil Milk Chocolate Mousse and OrangeIt had all the taste in a single plate. The orange in the middle contributed a little bitterness among the sweet sensation AND just like the original onigiri, it also had a slight saltiness. What a unique dessert! For a relatively small piece of cake, the price is a bit expensive but they were all worth the price.FYI: They also sell some pretty home wares, check them out for yourself!…Read More

A true taste of seafood
Jumbo Seafood
2015-02-03
Jumbo is an award winning seafood restaurant that has been in the business for almost 30 years. They set up their first outlet at East Cost Seafood Centre in 1987 and now they have established 6 outlets (5 in Singapore and 1 in Shanghai) also a catering service.I heard that the restaurants are always busy and it seems to be true (at least in one of the outlets). My family dined at the Dempsey Road outlet and it was packed with lots of people despite it was already 9.00 PM.Meals1. Chili Crab ($54.40++)Do you know what it is called when you successfully crack the thick skin of the crab and find plentiful meats inside, Happiness! The crabmeat was so delicate and sweet with a little spark of chili. You can never leave this restaurant without eating this famous chili crab.2. Deep Fried 2. Mini Bun ($0.60++/pcs)Crispy and beautifully browned. Soak it in the chili crab sauce and enjoy the fluffy and flavorful bun. 1 bun / person is FAR less than enough.3. Deep Fried Beancurd Special ($10++)Very crispy on the outside yet soft enough on the inside to melt in my mouth without the need to masticate. The sauce was quite sweet and the beancurd itself was already seasoned well so I did not dip it in the sauce.4. Fried Rice with Seafood ($36++)I’ve encountered many fried rice that are wayyyyyyyyy too salty or sweet but this one certainly was not. It had just a precise amount of salt.5. Mee Goreng ($14)Be careful, because this one although sweet, it was surprisingly spicy.6. Prawn with Cereal ($30++)The prawn was generously breaded with cereal, which made it crunchy and tasty. It even had a heavenly aroma. Surely, one dish that should not be missed.7. Broccoli with Scallop ($36++)It’s time to eat some greens to calm down those high cholesterol. This perfectly sautéed broccoli will work its magic. If you are not much of a herbivore, you can still devour the scallops. They live up to their name. The seafood was so rich in flavor and the staffs were so helpful and polite despite the crowd. I could not find anything to be complaint. Now, I know why Jumbo has been winning loads of awards, they nail it!…Read More

Nice Tasty Udon
Tsuru-Koshi Udon
2015-01-29
The udon that I tried was the kake udon ($6.50). It was so tasty. The noodle had a perfect chewiness and the broth was delicate. It was heartwarming and flavorful. Perfect to fill up my belly. For the service, the staffs were so friendly and helpful. They were so kind.I would not say it was the best udon that I've ever tried but it was not bad at all. Kind of addicting btw. …Read More

A sweet indulgence of chocolate
Godiva
2015-01-29
I finally happened to try the well-known chocolate ice cream from Godiva. Each bite delights with rich sweetness and the waffle cone was excitingly crispy. Such a charming combination. It was the ice cream that can absolutely spoil the chocolate mania(s).…Read More

Crispy yet Tender!
Saboten
2015-01-28
In my life, I’d never had any tonkatsu that I can describe as faultless. But it changed when I visited Saboten. Saboten itself is a restaurant chain that was founded in 1966 in Japan. During the years, Saboten has grown to be one of the largest tonkatsu chains in the world with more than 500 outlets. The dish that I tried at the time was the Iberico Loin Katsu Set.One fact about Iberico Pork: It is healthier than the usual pork as it contains some unsaturated fats (similar to olive oils) that can help to reduce bad cholesterol. The Iberico Loin Katsu Set ($28++) came with:1. Chawan MushiIt was smooth, warm, and savory. Love the crabmeats as well.2. SaladHealthy! Put the goma sauce on it so it can give a little burst of flavor for the salad.3. Yellow Radish (Takuan Zuke)Crunchy and refreshing!4. Free Flow of Rice and Miso SoupThe miso soup was a bit salty which is good to be paired with rice.5. The Iberico Pork LoinFinally!!!!! They served me the main star of the day. Before you can enjoy the tonkatsu, you have to mash the sesame seeds until they turn into powder and dust in on top of the pork. Also, don't forget to drizzle the tonkatsu with some tonkatsu sauce! The outside of the tonkatsu was so crispy that I could hear a crunch when I chewed it. On contrary, the meat was so tender that even a butter knife could cut through it. As for the sauce, it had a sweetly tantalizing flavor.6. Yuzu Ice CreamSo sour!Their tonkatsu was superb that I can’t stop thinking about it. From the crispiness to the flavor, they are the real deal. Of course, you may find greater tonkatsu elsewhere but in Singapore, Saboten has one of the best tonkatsu ever.…Read More

The Most Satisfying Hotpot
Haidilao Hot Pot
2015-01-23
Hai Di Lao hotpot, first established in China more than 20 years ago, have become one of the most successful restaurant companies in the world. Currently, they have opened more than 75 outlets worldwide.Usually, we have to wait for more than 2 hours if we want to dine in the restaurant. It happens at the Clarke Quay branch almost every night. That’s how popular the restaurant is.My family decided to eat in at the Somerset branch and to my surprise, we didn’t have to wait. Don’t worry because the quality is still the same. The Hotpot1. Tomato Soup(S$14++)The only restaurant that is successful in making such a brilliant tomato broth. It had a loveable thickness and excellent flavor.2. Vegetable (S$18++)A healthful loads of greens and mushrooms, brimming with freshness.3. Black Pork (S$16++)Slices of tenderness.4. Quail Eggs (S$6++)Too many quail eggs = pimples + cholesterol. But I don’t care as long as it is good.5. Fresh Tofu (S$6++)It’s kind of got the nice soft texture that most tofu has.6. Fried Tofu (S$3++)I was expecting the fried tofu to be somewhat hard-bitten but it was actually the other way around. It was quite tender.7. Assortment of mashed meats (S$11++)Slightly tender and full of flavor.8. Handmade Noodles (S$4++)Beautiful dance, beautiful noodle! It was so tasty that we ordered it thrice. There are so many hotpot restaurants in Singapore but this is no doubt the only restaurant that manages to create a so good tomato broth with nice dishes and superb customer service.…Read More

Exciting Pies
Windowsill Pies
2015-01-22
Windowsill Pies is a café that specializes in pies, not the savory but the sweet one. There are about 10 kinds of pies and I opted for 6 of them. Pies 1. Strawberry Lemon Slice (S$7) Bombed with sourness. It’s pretty much suitable for those of you who prefer to eat sour things instead of sweets. 2. Banana Slice (S$7) A little sweet compared to the previous one but not overly. The cream on the top was so smooth and light. Tasty! 3. Grasshopper Slice (S$7.50) The pie was filled with kicking flavor of mint. Only recommended for those of you who prefer a strong mint flavor. As for myself, I didn’t really enjoy it. For me, it tasted like toothpaste. 4. Funny Apple (S$7.50) A fruity treat, filled with a little sweetness. Fresh and Healthy! 5. Pineapple Passionfruit (S$8) Very rich in flavor, soft, and glazy! Indeed, it was refreshingly sour. 6. Camp Symmetry (S$8) I love the truffle, love the textural crunch, love the sweetness, love everything about it. Windowsill pies have successfully intertwined a wonderful flavor and texture. Although, some of them are more suitable for those of you who prefer a comparatively strong flavor.www.nonatukangmakan.com…Read More

Foodies' Heaven
PasarBella
2015-01-17
Pasarbella, located at the Grandstand Bukit Timah, is an ideal place where Foodies can satisfy their cravings. Currently, there are more than 30 stalls in the market. From Asian food, European food, to desserts, you name it.The stalls that Nona tried:Cicely: Chicken Pot PieThe pie’s skin was crispy, paired well with the not too creamy and adequately seasoned chicken inside.Le Patio: PaellaThe most savory paella that I’ve ever tried. The rice was so rich in flavor, even the seafood tasted fantastic.Laman’s Delight: Pomegranate & Grilyarge (@S$12/slice)The pomegranate cake was exotic. A brilliant sweetness, smooth cream, dotted with crunchy pomegranates. Definitely, the king of desserts. The grilyarge was faultless either. A harmonious blend of sweetness and bitterness with a little crunchiness.Pasarbella is such a blessing for us, foodies. If you manage to go to Pasarbella, I suggest you to try the paella from Le Patio and the pomegranate cake from Laman’s delight. The cake may be quite expensive but I can assure you, it was worth the price.…Read More

Disappointing Food
Insadong Korea Town
2015-01-17
Insadong Korean Town is a newly opened Korean Food Court located at Resorts World Sentosa. The opening of this Korean Town has gathered many attention both from the locals and tourists. What I found unique about the food court was the ordering system. First we choose what we want to eat on the computer, then we put in the money and voila the receipt come out and we just have to get the food from the counter.Be careful though as sometimes the machine can be troublesome. When I wanted to put in the money, the machine could not accept it. So, the manager had to open the machine and gave us the change.Food 1. Japchae Brilliant seasoning but not so well done glass noodle. The texture was pretty hard.2. Naeng Myeon The noodle was not cooked well but the seasoning was excellent. An ideal dish to handle the heat.3. Tteokbokki The sauce was alright but again the texture of the rice cake was pretty hard. It was not chewy at all.4. J-cone (More like U cone)  Crunchy and the vanilla ice cream was tasty enough. But I don’t find it impressive at all.Among all the food that I tried, nothing can be called as extraordinary. If I have to choose two items, I’ll choose the Naeng Myeon and the J-cone. Although, I can’t say I was impress by those dishes.…Read More

Shocking Quality
ASTONS Specialities
2015-01-16
Astons is a restaurant group in Singapore that was established in 2005. The group specializes in American food and has now opened three types of restaurants; Astons Specialities, Astons Express, and Astons Steak & Salad. A few weeks ago, Nona visited one of Astons Specialities branches at Suntec City Mall. The restaurant applies order, pay, and sit system. However, if you come with many people, it is better to find a table first before ordering at the cashier in front. The Meals 1. Honey Bourbon Ribs (S$24.50++) with French Fries & BBQ Beans It was not the first time I visited the restaurant and this time the ribs were kind of disappointing. On the first visit, the ribs were luscious and the seasoning seeped into the meat. Fair enough to be compared with Tony Roma’s. Unfortunately, on the second visit the ribs were not as tender as they used to be and the sauce did not seeped into the meat. 2. Prime Tenderloin (S$28.50++) with Onion Rings & Baked Potato What I ordered was a medium-cooked Tenderloin but what I got was a well-done Tenderloin. Furthermore, they mistook my side dishes as French Fries and Corn. Lucky enough, the staff was willing to change the side dishes. The tenderloin was a bit hard bitten and it was not seasoned appropriately. The baked potato was even better than the meat. Piping hot and buttery. Simple but spectacular in flavor. Beverage 1. Root beer Float (S$3.90++) Fizzy but smooth, topped with the sweetness of the ice cream. It was a well-balanced drink. I was very taken aback by the food quality that was served. It was not what I expected. The ribs that used to be my favorite have gone. If only the restaurant improves its quality to what it used to be, I will visit the restaurant again in the future.…Read More

Fine Dining Defined at Affordable Price
Saveur
2015-01-15
Saveur is a French restaurant in Singapore that is known for their affordability as well as their divine meals. As of January 2015, the Saveur group has already opened 4 restaurants and all of them are always packed with lots of people, including the Saveur branch at Far East Plaza. On the night that my family and I visited the restaurant, we had to wait for approximately 1 hour before we could grab a table. I think that pretty much explains how crowded it was.1. Salmon (X’mas & New Year Special) (S$5.90++)Loveable crisp and just enough saltiness.2. Foie Gras (S$9.90++)Fine dining defined. Perfect tenderness combined with a slightly fruity flavor.3. Pasta (S$7.90++) (X’mas & New Year Special)The pasta was cooked well and the sauce was packed with big flavor.4. Duck Confit (S$12.90++)The duck confit was crispy on the outside but tender in the middle. As it can be a bit salty, it is better to eat it with the mashed potato to tone down the saltiness.5. Beef (S$24.90++)Artistic presentation. I love the texture of the beef. For the seasoning, it was okay but it seems something was missing.I’ve been hearing good things about their duck confit. To be honest, the entrées kind of overpowered the mains. Therefore, the mains didn’t impress me much although they were enjoyable. With that affordable price and entertaining dishes, you should try to visit this restaurant if you want some exciting French meals.…Read More

Crispiest Crepe Ever
Crepe Signature
2015-01-14
The crepe that Nona tried was the Milk Cheese (SGD 3.90++). The skin was undeniably crispy and a bit sweet. The cheese gathered in the middle so I couldn’t taste the saltiness from the cheese until I reached the middle part of the crepe. Overall, it was very pleasing. Flavor-wise, it was toothsome. I can say that the crepe was one of the crispiest crepes I’ve ever tried.http://www.nonatukangmakan.com/#!Crepe-Signature/cz44/0AD5C09E-B04E-4AA2-A113-8E04E8DA50AE…Read More
