Uncle Soup
2013-02-02
Techno-edge is my favourite canteen to get good and affordable food since there are a wide variety of stalls catering from Japanese to Indonesian cuisines. Uncle soup is one of the stalls which I will frequent -at $2.50 per bowl (additional 30cents for rice), the serving is fairly generous. For those who do not want the soup in the form of a hotpot, you can opt for just soup which will serve in ordinary bowl. What i like about the soup is that it is clear and not oily, reminding me of homecooked food. Thumbs up for this lovely soup to keep me satisfied for the rest of the day! …Read More

korean food at YIH
Miso Korean Cuisine - Food Junction
2013-01-29
What I like about this korean mixed rice is its generous servings of shredded cucumber, carrot, beansprouts and seaweed. Korean mixed rice requires one to mix all these side dishes up, together with the runny egg and the BBQ chicken. Unfortunately, this dish is quite a let down since it is quite tasteless as I could only vaguely taste the spiciness of the chicken. The complimentary soup on the other hand is too salty. At $4.50 (NUS student price), the serving is fairly large and does constitute a hearty meal. In terms of service, I feel that it was fairly good. I was served by either an Indonesian or a Filipino lady who had changed my order promptly when she realized that my mixed rice had been added with chili when I had told her specifically earlier that I do not want any chili. kudos to her for that.…Read More

freshly made chee cheong fun
Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun
2013-01-28
It has been a long time since I have visited this food centre hence when I spotted the long queue at Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun, I decided to queue up and try the chee cheong fun as well. What make this stall stood out from the rest was how freshly made the chee cheong fun was (no pun intended) as one can really observe the whole process of the chee cheong fun- from steaming to serving up straight to your plate. As compared to the conventional factory made chee cheong fun, this is smooth, soft and so palatable as the chee cheong fun can be easily broken with a mere touch of your chopsticks and compliments very well with the sauce. It is available in char siew, chicken, mushrooms and prawns and at $2 per piece, I feel that it is as good as, if not better than the chee cheong fun offered in dimsum restaurants! I will be definitely be back for more! :)…Read More

goood chicken rice
Qi Le Chicken Rice - S11
2013-01-28
I really like to frequent this stall for the generous serving of the chicken rice! Even as you take away the chicken rice, the auntie will also take away 1 huge container of the peanut ribs soup as well. Though I find that the soup is salty too salty for my liking but it was one of the few stalls I know of that actually complimented soup when you take away. At $3.50 per packet, it may be a tad expensive but I love how fragrant the chicken rice was and that the chicken was tender and not too oily. Even if you requested for drumstick instead of breast meat, you will be charged at no extra cost too! Thumbs up! …Read More

what a let down
Menya Musashi
2013-01-23
I should have heeded the advice of the fellow open-ricers on this restaurant. There was often a long queue outside the place and the ever friendly waiter was always greeting potential customers eagerly at the entrance and serving cold drinks to those in the queue. The posters pasted outside the restaurant were also quite attractive as they boosted about the black and white ramen. Therefore glancing at the short queue at 12pm, I decided to give it a try.The interior of the place is actually very small and honestly, I felt quite claustrophobic, especially when my bf and I were ushered to this tiny corner right next to the open concept. Therefore u can imagine one's difficulty in trying to get in and out of the seat without actually bumping into the patrons next to you. Surprisingly, food was served extremely fast, within 5 minutes after we have ordered. However, the noodles are not served piping hot which I feel is very crucial in enjoying a bowl of japanese ramen. My boyfriend ordered the black cha su ramen. His was served lukewarm and the soup base was very salty. For me, i ordered the white cha su ramen. Even though mine was served slightly hotter, my soup base was far more salty than that of the black ramen! Its as if a bottle of salt has been added in by mistake! The serving is also really small and not satisfying. For $12.90, I had just two pieces of cha siew ( of which half is fats and skin), half an egg, some leek and a piece of seaweed. It was quite scary to find a piece of used napkin hidden beneath the 2 pieces of napkin that came along with the chopsticks since the remnants of the stains strongly resembled that of the red ramen, of which none of us ordered. That was indeed a turn off.Definitely not going back there again even though the service is good since for the price, this meal is definitely too expensive and the recommended ramen is not highly recommended at all:(:(…Read More

Formosa Delights Handmade noodles - Food Republic
2013-01-22
I have always loved handmade noodles for its lovely texture compared to the mee pok or yellow noodles which I often dislike for its 'artificial' flavour. This noodles is a big disappointment since firstly, the soup base is too oily and salty for me. Secondly, as seen from the picture, I was merely given a few strands of vegetables and 2 mincemeat 'balls'- of which they were evident in the picture. The noodles was also average. Hence overall I was not satisfied with the meal at all.…Read More

Best BBQ chicken in AMK Hub
BBQ Express
2013-01-19
This is the place to go for a quick fix of ready made BBQ chicken or chicken wings or pork ribs. Even though the BBQ items here may be more expensive than other stalls, especially to the BBQ food stall in NTUC fairprice at $8.90 per BBQ chicken, it is definitely worth the price! I have always liked the pineapple rice with the BBQ chicken wing and my favourite item has always been the BBQ pork ribs as they are well marinated and juicy. For today I bought the last honey glazed chicken and again this is not a disappointment as the meat is tender and goes very well with the rice. Do remember to ask for the chili sauce when u takeaway from the stall as they complement very well with the meat! Thumbs up!…Read More

One of the must try in NUS Arts Canteen
Indian - The Deck
2013-01-15
This is the stall that one can always observe a perpetual queue, especially during the busy lunch hour. For most of my undergraduate days in NUS, I have always avoided Indian Food as I tend to associate it with hot and spicy ( since i am not a big fan of hot food), however it was until last semester when my friend was raving all about it that I decided to give it a shot. Since then I become quite a fan of Indian food (only if the queue is not too long). what I like is that they have a huge array of different kind of Indian side dishes and it can be a good alternative for a vegetarian to have his vegetarian meal other than the vegetarian stall since it has a good mix of vegetables and meat dishes. It is interesting to observe how the iinternational students all love this stall (perhaps curious or that one can hardly replicate such food back home) and the Indian uncle and auntie will always be more than willing to explain to them each different Indian dish, from the thosai to the tandoori chicken. I always love how big the portion they give and with one main and two side dishes that cost only $2.80, I can have a satisfying lunch. Kudos to the brilliant smiles and greetings by the Indian uncle and auntie and for this splendid, and to me, a very authentic Indian food…Read More

Mediocre substandard Chinese Cooked food
Chinese Cooked Food
2013-01-14
This will be my last time eating the Chinese Cooked Food at the deck. The quality of the Chinese cooked food has deteriorated over the years that I was in NUS- the portion used to be far bigger than what was shown in the picture. Even though there was no price hike compared to some other stores at the deck, the portion has become ridiculously smaller. Again it depends on who was the one dishing out the dishes to the plate- the aunty used to be very generous as compared to the uncle but unfortunately she has become more stingy, more often than not counting the number of pieces to be given. I had decided to give the store a shot after I was put off by the other long queues such as at the Muslim, Indian, Yang Tau Foo stores etc during the my short lunch break.Look at the pathetic pieces of chicken I was given, and many of them were actually chicken skin. Even though I had paid $2.20 for a meal that supposedly consisted of 1 meat and 2 vegetables, yet the number of chicken chunks given was far less than the black fungus. The vegetables was a big disappointment- you may be thinking how bad can it get when it was just green vegetables. Well the vegetables was actually badly overcooked with a strong aftertaste of charred food. The potatoes was very oily too, which gave your lips a nice shiny gloss after eating it.All in all, if you want to seek a filling healthier meal, please do not patron this store, especially when you are a female as I have observed throughout the years that the aunty and uncle seemed to love giving larger portions to guys and school staff ( with their distinguishable staff tags hanging in front) and exchange students ( and more specifically Caucasians ). …Read More

decent Hong Kong Food
Central Hong Kong Café
2013-01-13
Initially I wanted to have lunch at the food court but I was put off by the massive lunch crowd hence it was while exploring the basement of the Star for other food options that I chanced upon the central hong kong cafe. I was first attracted by the facade of the cafe as it reminded me of the traditional hong kong tea cafe or 茶餐厅. After a quick glimpse at the menu outside, I was quickly ushered to my seats. There are two kind of seating in the cafe, either the outdoor or indoor. personally I prefer the indoor, for its ambiance, while others may prefer the outdoor for its slightly bigger seating space. Once u are inside, you will be immediately greeted by a massive picture of the legendary Bruce Lee, pictures of other Hong Kong stars as well as the nostalgic Canton classic such as 上海滩. Even the furniture pays close resemblance to the traditional Hong Kong cafe and the menu is presented in both Chinese and English languages.Despite it being the lunch hour and the kitchen can get a tad busy, the service was good. The staff was friendly in responding to our requests. In my case, we had asked for a change in our tables as we were initially seated right underneath the fan and had felt cold. We were promptly changed to another table and our food was served quicker than expected too.We had ordered the Hong Kong milk tea with ginger ($2). I quite like the tinge of ginger taste with the milk tea. This is braised beef brisket noodle ($6). We were pleasantly surprised to see the large serving of noodles and the beef given the price. The noodles, I feel was cooked to perfectly as it was springy and not soggy ( a tell-tale sign that the noodles had been cooked a tad too long). I am not a big fan of beef as I was always put off by a certain distinct taste of beef hence imagine my joy as I have my first small bite of the beef- it is very tender and juicy and there is no such taste in the beef!We also ordered the stir-fry fish slice with bitter-gourd rice ($7.50). This I feel is really worth the money as the dish was served with a sunny-side up and a generous portion of fish and bitter-gourd, onions and bell peppers. Given such huge serving, I could only wish that I had more rice to eat with. The fish was deep-fried first before frying with the vegetables in the oriental preserved black bean sauce. For dessert, we have Pomelo mango cream (杨枝甘露 ) ($4). This is not a value for money as surprisingly, compared to the main course we had, the serving was pretty small with just a few chunks of Mango and a little sago and pomelo. The dessert is also a little too sweet for me and I feel that the puree is not as creamy and thick as I would have expected it to be.All in all, a decent meal which can definitely filll up your stomach given the large serving. I had spied on the patrons next to me slurping on the Hong Kong Rickshaw noodles or 车仔面 ($4.50). Maybe I will try that next time!…Read More

The place to go for affordable Halal food
Ameen Makan House
2013-01-09
Ameen Makan House is one of the must go places to go for NUS students who want to go a late night snack or an affordable meal while studying late in school since it offers a range of affordable Halal food. I always go for the omelette wrapped rice since I believe that it can be more filling but this time round I decided to go for a range and decided to order the omelette wrapped noodles. I really love the presentation of the omelette wrapped dishes in this eatery, the rice/noodles are wrapped nicely beneath a thin layer of nicely fried egg. However compared to the fried rice version, this noodles is a tad too sweet for me but other-than that it is a filling meal for me. At around $5 dollars for a meal, this is definitely the place to go to for an affordable yet filling meal…Read More

hawker price, restaurant style vegetarian food
Kiat Lim Vegetarian Food
2013-01-09
My grandmother is a vegetarian and this is one of her favourite vegetarian places in ang mo kio. Situated in a coffee shop, the price is fairly affordable and the presentation and the food I feel can be comparable to that of a restaurant. Sometimes the dishes maybe a tad too oily and salty hence it is advised to ask for less salt and less oil (for those who are more health conscious) when ordering. For the four of us, we ordered 3 dishes, one stir-fried vegetables, one stir-fried noodles and her favourite sambal fish. The stir-fried vegetables is pretty average but I love the sambal dish as the spiciness level is just right and when served piping hot, it gives the extra kick. The stir-fried noodles is served with a generous portion of vegetables and the noodles are chewy. In total, we spent around $30 which comes down to around $7+ per person.…Read More

Porn's not for the faint hearted
PORN'S
2013-01-04
This is my first time visiting Porn's and perhaps my last time visiting this place. Recently there has been a surge in Thai restaurants opening in Singapore and frankly speaking, this is nowhere near to the authentic Thai food since it is not only overpriced, the portion of the food is very small and the taste is definitely not as nice as what you get in Thailand. Having spent 6 weeks in Thailand recently, I was really quite disappointed with the thai food at Porn's.The signature Cha Yen is a must try but at a whopping price of $3.90 for this small glass, I would recommend one to head elsewhere, perhaps to golden mile for a cheaper version of Cha yen. The Green Curry was not bad, with the right level of spiciness. However the portion of the baby eggplants and chicken chunks were barely enough to share among the 7 of us and I really hope that more basil leaves have been added in to give the nice flavour. Personally I would want to taste more of the green lemon too.The kangkong was ok and for the basil leaves with mince chicken, I wish that the portion can be bigger as well and personally I find it a tad too oily for my liking. This plate of mango sticky rice cost $8.90! and it is not even arranged in the thai traditional way of which the mangos are placed on top and around the sticky rice before the coconut milk is added. Evidently, the amount of mangos given were too few to have that kind of presentation. This is the pineapple fried rice which I feel is too little, even for one person and it cost $10.90.We ordered the thai fishcake and the prawncake which were highly recommended. The prawncake was really too salty for our likely whereas the thai fishcake had a strange aftertaste. We ordered the seafood coconut milk soup( $12.90) and it was not to most of our liking at all. Many of my friends complained that it was too sour ( we scooped up a lot of lemongrass) and the addition of the coconut milk was a weird combination. Actually I had drank that in Cambodia before and I remembered that it was tasty and refreshing. The number of shrimps and fish and squid scooped up were so few that we could count within our ten fingers. As it was a weekday afternoon, the number of customers were not a lot and the food was served quickly. For the 7 of us, we had to fork out $14 each and it was not very satisfying since the portion was too little. I will most probably head to Purvis Street (First Thai) or Golden Mile complex next time when I have any cravings for 'real' Thai food.…Read More

Japanese Buffet with some misses
Kiseki Japanese Buffet Restaurant
2013-01-03
At 1130am, just before the restaurant was opened, you can spy a long queue for the walk-in customers. For customers who have reserved prior today ( you need at least 3 days in advance), there is also a queue. Situated on the 8th floor of eighth floor, one can have a paranormal view of Orchard area with the french windows. The whole place was bright though the downside of sitting in the 'porch' was how my table was just underneath the air-conditioning. My piping hot food (teppanyaki) and drinks turned cold quickly which spoil the dining experience. Therefore it is important to request to sit somewhere, away from the air-conditioning.I absolutely love the garlic fried rice, each mouth is so flavourful as you can taste the rich flavour of the garlic. The chawanmushi was served with a generous portion of crabmeat, japanese fishcake and ginko nut though my friend felt that the chawanmushi was not very smooth.I ordered the pork belly shabu-shabu and I love this dish the most! The pork belly was tender and the fats in between was little and it goes very well with a small bowl of rice. The portion of vegetables was generous too! A nice soupy dish to have especially after eating all the other more flavourful dishes. The vegetable tempura (Long bean and eggplant) is very oily ( a bit of a miss) and the chicken skewers is really a huge disappointment. The meat is not juicy and the sauce is not marinated evenly. The sotong ball skewer was also a tad too hard to chew. The prawns are fresh though as they are very sweet as well as the other seafood. The sashimi is also fresh and be warned that it is a very popular choice for most patrons and there are many instances that one is greeted with empty plates are the buffet table.I really love the desserts! It is important to head to the table early as the popular items such as the in house special toufu cheesecake was no longer refilled when I headed over for my second round. I love the black bean mousse as well as the puddings (mango and lime)The ice-creams are also a hit! The sesame and the greentea and yuzu flavours are my favourites! There is a very nice scent of sesame (not overpowering) and the yuzu flvaour is very refreshing! really a nice complement with the greentea flavoured ice creamThe waffle I feel is fluffy and nice and I love the toppings! especially the yuzu flavoured topping! All in all, I feel that the desserts are more of a hit especially the interesting Japanese snacks like mochi( Japanese sticky rice cake). I was intrigued by the grilled salmon fish heads but unfortunately they were not refilled. Same with the porridge too. Even though the variety of the food was really great yet the huge crowd also equally meant that most of the food( especially the more popular ones like sashimi and the in-house specials) were often snapped up quickly and the busy kitchen was often unable to serve out on time. Service was good too as our plates were often cleared quickly, though it sometimes came to the point that when we stopped eating and there was still food left on the plate, the plate was too quick to be cleared. Nevertheless good job for efficiency! will i go back there again? perhaps!…Read More

affordable dim sum around in town
Victor's Kitchen
2013-01-01
I never knew that there lies such a famous dimsum place at Sunshine Plaza- a popular hangout for students from the nearby NAFA till my friend's recommendation. I did a quick search and was excited as I read about the rave reviews on this place! I arrived at around 1215pm, expecting a huge queue since I had read about the limited number of seats, therefore I was really glad to be able to find a table for 4 so quickly. My friend quickly ordered while waiting for my other friends since I was told that the food will take quite sometime to be served. She is right- we waited for around 20minutes before the piping hot dim sum was served to our table. Generally, despite the peak lunch hour, service was good- it was efficient as the tables were cleaned asap and the ladyboss( I think) was busy serving the customers who had already formed a queue by 1pm. The ambiance of the place really reminded me of the busy hongkong cafes with the hustle and bustle as well as the injections of Cantonese. The salted egg lava bun was really great though I find that the price was quite steep ( the price was increased to 4 dollars from 3.50 for 3) and the other dim sum like the siew mai, charsiew buns and the carrot cake were awesome as well. For the four of us, we ordered about 7 items with the in house special drink and each of us paid around 12.60 each. This is fairly reasonable since it was an hearty meal hence I would strongly recommend to go over with group of friends though one will have to be early to beat the lunch crowd! Thumbs up!…Read More
