Murtabak!
Mufiz Food Corner
2013-12-23
Ever since my last visit here, I've been dying to come back to try out other dishes on their menu! This time I came to try out their Chicken Murtabak ($6)! Honestly, it's my first time trying Murtabak so I don't really have a benchmark to compare to. But overall it tasted really good with a chewy outer layer similar to egg prata and a generously filled delicious chicken bits inside. I enjoyed my visit a lot and service was prompt as well. For its huge portion and taste, it's worth all the price I paid.…Read More

Crepe up to Cloud 9!
Lady M
2013-12-20
Lady M Confections is a popular cake boutique that is known to attract very long queue in the upper east side of New York City, mainly for their famous Mille Crepe Cake. This boutique prides itself on creating the freshest finest cakes and desserts accompanied with aromatic tea and coffee. I have queued for 10 minutes on a Saturday night at 8pm to enjoy a heavenly experience. Let's start from the best! Their signature Lady M Mille Crepe ($7.50) was surprising affordable considering the brand and the complexity of perfecting this cake. It may seem very plain and simple but don't judge! Never judge. We were told by the waitress at 8.10pm that they only left 2 slices of this and asked whether we wanted it before it's gone. Regrettably, we only ordered 1 slice, the most regretful decision I've made that day! This slice basically brought us up to heaven, the perfectly caramelized golden top with exactly 20 thin meticulously handmade crepes covered with layers of sweet pastry cream was more than amazing, the best cake I've ever had this entire year of 2013! We then got ourselves the Strawberry Shortcake ($7.50), which was great too. Light and pure in nature with sweet cream and delicious fresh strawberries, the vanilla spongecake was something I miss having for a long time. We also got their Tarte aux Fruits ($10), which may seem the prettiest among all 3 cakes we had that night but not the best I've tried. It's not that bad with all the fresh fruits, but nowhere near the taste I get from the mille crepe in comparison. A good try nevertheless! Overall, I wasn't expecting to experience a heavenly moment here. Everything served here was great! Appearance wise, the mille crepe may not be the best. But in terms of taste and quality, I say I wouldn't mind coming back just to take away up to 10 slices of their signature for my family. …Read More

Jammed Service!
Bangkok Jam
2013-12-20
Being my favourite casual dining restaurant to go on a simple date, Bangkok Jam always have something great to offer despite its limited menu. Came to the outlet at Plaza Singapura on a weekday night, almost all the tables were occupied but luckily, we were directed to this corner table for 2. Space may be a little limited and we could easily hear the other tables' conversations, but it was manageable. Decided to skip the usual curries that we love to try something different! Got their Chicken Phad Thai ($11.50) with the original stick noodle. The dish was sumptuous, very flavourful despite its simple laid-back presentation. They weren't very generous with the chicken meat but for the taste, it was worth its price. I also got their Grilled Chicken with Thai Herbs - Half ($15.90), this item was under the "sides and mains" section and I thought that this would be a main course on its own since its ultimately a half grilled chicken, but no it came like this without any side dishes. And since service was very slow I didn't bother wasting time to get the rice. As usual, my buddy got himself the Red Ruby with Coconut Icecream ($7.50) because it's always been his favourite. Its a simple yet comforting dessert on any occasion. We also gave their Mango Sticky Rice ($8.90) a try. We love everything about it! The warm sticky rice and cold fresh mango flesh topped with sweet but not overpowering sauce were really great combination! Really worthy to be one of my best Asian desserts. Overall, I really love the food as well as the interesting city-inspired ambience. However, I wasn't impressed with the service at all. Firstly, we asked for 2 cups of ice water when we were ordering, the waitress nodded but did not open her mouth. Secondly, not only did the waitress not repeat our orders, she had forgotten about our ice water even after 2 dishes arrived. Thirdly, it was more than difficult and frustrating to get any staff's attention and when we finally managed, the attitude given were worst than standard. Fourthly, other customers who came later than us were served with their table of food before we even got our first dish. I have written over 120 reviews on Openrice and never did once I complained much about the service. So it really shows that I'm pretty upset over the service served here despite my love for their food. I may still return to the other outlets but no way am I coming back to this particular outlet anymore (not till the day I see the change in their waitstaff). …Read More

Your Dessert Story!
DessertStory
2013-12-20
Been hanging out a lot at Junction 8 recently but there's always somewhere good to get some good food! The Chocolate with Nata de Coco ($4.20) shaved iced from Dessert Story is a great dessert to have other you had your hearty meal from elsewhere! Saw the staff shaving the frozen chocolate ice and it was an amazing sight. The nata de coco complements the chocolate flavour well but I would love it more if it were other fruits or something. But nevertheless! This place is always great for dessert! …Read More

Rameniac!
Menya Musashi Niku Niku Do
2013-12-20
I couldn't resist standing myself behind the queue of 10+ people when I was wandering around looking for dinner on a weekday night. I've been eating ramen a lot lately. The last time I came here was like 2 months ago and I believe that I really miss their broth! Got their White Chashu Ramen ($12.90) again, the white description actually meant the broth, not the Chashu. The broth is thick and rich and every sip was satisfying! Love their Chashu a lot too! & Compared to many other ramen place, I love their egg the most because they somehow seasoned it differently than the rest. Service may not be great because of the brisk business but do visit their outlet at Bugis and give their signature ramen a try! You won't regret it.…Read More

Ramen for All Ages!
Ajisen Ramen
2013-12-20
It seems that I'm craving for ramen like 90% of the time. This time I went to Ajisen Ramen at Junction 8 because the outlet here seems to be more peaceful than elsewhere. Got their ramen sets which came with the drinks, where are pretty much standard. My buddy got himself the Chicken Teriyaki Ramen Set ($13.90) for which he picked the fried cuttlefish as his side dish. This ramen is dry but the teriyaki sauce tasted delicious, not too salty but did gave the firm springy ramen a finishing edge. The rest tasted not bad either. I got myself the Kumamoto Ramen Set ($14.90) which I selected the California maki as my side. This ramen is one of ther best since Ajisen was founded in Kumamoto in the first place. The soup was flavourful on its own. The California maki may need improvement on it's very miniature size but other than that, everything was good! Compared to many other ramen restaurants out there, Ajisen serve thicker noodles than usual which is one of the things I like. Besides, it's convenience and casual setting always make me going back during the times when I don't want to try anything new. A perfect place for family casual dinner, great for all ages!…Read More

Oishi Bento!
Tori Q
2013-12-20
There's always something special about Japanese yakitori that makes me happy. So I'm glad that there's a Tori-Q place around almost every corner. Ordered their Bento Set A ($5.80) which comes with 2 chicken, 1 pork and 1 chicken ball stick. I love the seasoning they use for their grilled meat and everything goes especially well when it's accompanied with soft seasoned Japanese rice, seaweed and pickles that I like. Makes a great comfort food for me anytime!…Read More

Shuffle Shuffle!

Always enjoy chilling with my drinking buddies at night. This time one of them brought us to her regular bar at Clarke Quay. There were no table space when we got there and we had to wait downstairs for awhile before we were escorted up to the main level. As time passes by, we were directed from the very end of the restaurant to the table right infront of the band! The band sings both English and Chinese songs and all of them have really great voices and are all very talented in their own ways. Enjoyed their music! So anyway we ordered the Hoegaarden Tower to share among 4 people. After finishing the tower, we got ourselves a bucket of different kinds of beer. I'm not really pro in drinking but I love their apple cider the most. I got hungry after some time and decided to order the Chicken Tikka Thin Crust Pizza ($16) to share, I wasn't sure why I ordered this but it was served hot and good enough to fill our stomachs! The BBQ chicken had great touch of Indian spices and helped me rid the beer aftertaste I had, also made me more sober. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here. The ambience is great with very good live band, drinks and food. This visit has got me marking this place as my new favourite chilling place!…Read More

Spoilt for Choice!
Empire State
2013-12-20
Came back here again twice in a month! This visit was not long after my wisdom tooth extraction and I couldn't take in anything very solid. Their wide variety of delicious looking dishes on the menu do leave customers spoilt for choice. Ordered their Seafood Chowder ($6.90), which was disappointing for its price because I didn't get any seafood bits at all. However, it was rich in consistency and had the right seafood flavour without being fishy. My buddy got his Chicken Fettuccine ($14.90) which was amazing! The chicken were mixed in generously with rich cream sauce seasoned nicely. A true delighting dish, wished that the soup would have the same impact as this. Overall, I guess I would still return to try out other items from their extensive menu.…Read More

Hi Little Bears!

Every cuisine always has it's unique dish. Taiwan cuisine, there's fried chicken, beef noodles and not forgetting the very authentic braised pork belly rice! This is my second visit to this little cafe, my previous one wasn't awesome but I still wanted to give it another try! Ordered the Braised Pork Belly Rice ($5.90) which comes with a drink, I got the wintermelon drink which was simple but refreshing. This bowl of simple Taiwanese's classic favourite is full of flavour after mixing the savoury minced pork belly and salted vegetables together. The braised egg and vegetable was also good alongside the yummy sticky mixed rice. Overall, dish was good on an average level, but it was totally worth the price. Will visit again for other dishes.…Read More

Cempadak!
Tangs Market
2013-12-20
Came here recently with my friends and I spotted that this interesting stall selling unique fried delights. Got the Fried Cempadak ($2), which is basically a type of fruit similar to jackfruit. Every bite gave a crispy thin outer with chewy sticky sweet inner cempadak flesh. Very good! They also sell other fried fruits like fried durian, fried banana and other interesting fried sweet stuff.…Read More

Oversized Chicken!
Hot Star Large Fried Chicken
2013-12-19
Was starving in town one day and didn't really want to sit down anywhere for food because the queue everywhere were horrible. Thought of Hotstar being nearby and decided to get a chicken for my lunch! Like all the crispy chicken served here, the Lemon BBQ Chicken ($4.90) is huge! Huge enough to cover my face, considering I have a pretty big face too. The lemon BBQ sauce reminds me of the KFC Korean crunch, not that they are exactly the same but they do taste similar, both great at different depth. This one was crispy with some good flavoured skin and flesh, love that they don't heavily coat the meat with flour like its competitors. Love it.…Read More

Yum at NamNam!
NamNam Noodle Bar
2013-12-19
NamNam Noodle Bar is a growing business in Singapore selling simple but authentic Vietnamese dishes. The restaurant is best known for their pho, the country's national dish. There are always a long queue at all three of its outlets as customers are all willing to wait for good food. Me, too, brought myself to stand behind a long queue and waited for roughly 10 minutes to enjoy a delectable meal. We shortened our waiting time by opting to sit at their bar top table, which wasn't bad at all as I love their decor. They also have interesting Vietnamese condiments placed at every table and most of them works really well in enhancing the flavour of every dish I've ever ordered. Ordered their Lime Soda ($3) which looks pretty much like regular sprite on the outside but no! Don't judge it by the simplicity, for everything served at this place never fails to surprise me. Every sip was refreshing and wonderful. My friend ordered one of their signature beef pho, the Pho Beef Steak Slices ($8.90). The broth looked pretty plain and light on the outside but it was actually intensely boiled for more than 24 hours! So flavourful that actually to be honest, nobody would ever need the condiments at all! They also have other beef pho such as Pho Beef Balls, Pho Wagyu Beef Slices and Pho Beef Combination. For myself, I decided to try their bahn mi this time around, got myself the Caremelised 5-Spice Pork Belly, Pork Pate ($5.90) which I considered decently cheap for the really large toasted baguette I received. The 5-spice pork meat were really savoury and full of different flavours at every bite. Enhanced with mayonnaise, carrots, daikon, cilantro etc, this was a really great dish to make my new favourite! Can't wait to try the other bahn mi they have! Although this wasn't shown on the illustrated menu, the Southern Roll ($4.90) is a great side that can be ordered through the paper menu where you're supposed to write your order quantity on. Unlike the southern rolls I've tried at other restaurants, this was surprisingly soft with a firm juicy prawn to make a good bite. The sauce that it came with also enhances all flavour such that I hoped that I could have more! Overall, I fully enjoyed myself despite the long queue and brisk environment. The food were served really promptly and the staff here are all friendly and skilled in managing customers and orders. Prices are very affordable as well for the portion and flavour you get. Always love all the dishes I had and can't wait to try out everything on their menu! Thumbs up to NamNam! …Read More

Matcha Love!
MOF @ My Izakaya
2013-12-19
Came down to MOF just because I was craving for a really good warm cup of green tea latte. This place is also great for chilling! They have a great variety of matcha drinks and desserts. Their Hot Matcha Latte with Matcha Sauce ($4.50) is my all time favourite! Not too sweet served in thick consistency. Their Iced Caramel Latte ($5.50) was also great, although there was a need to add syrup to sweeten the bitterness, it's a good drink for chilling. Overall, I'm glad that this place exists near where I stay because the food and beverage here served never gets dull!…Read More

ASTONS Specialities
2013-12-19
Visited Astons recently because I was craving for some delicious grilled chicken yet I was on a tight budget. It was also a cold rainy night in town so I figured this should be the place. There was a queue of roughly 8 customers but I stood in line for less than 10 minutes. To improve efficiency, the staff gave us the menu to order in advance while queuing. When we were seated, the food came immediately right after. The Lemon Lime Chicken ($8.90) was perfect for me as it came along with some good onion rings and smoking hot baked potato. My buddy got his Double Up Chicken ($13.50) whereby he selected the Hickory & Teriyaki chicken to pair with his potato salad and onion rings. For the price, it's considered really worth it when 2 huge piece of chicken thighs were served. I always love the grilled chicken at Astons because they are always grilled to perfection with some great sauce, all of their sauces are amazing! We also ordered Chicken Nuggets - 8pc ($3.90) to share and although it tasted pretty average, we were glad to have them cheaply. Since it was really cold in the mall, we got ourselves the Hot Chocolate ($3.50). Love the rich chocolate and milk taste but would also love the option of additional marshmallows in the future! Overall, I'm always on about going to Astons for any meal of the day because this place just never goes wrong! …Read More
