Café Iguana
2013-10-26
A few weeks back, we discovered Cafe Iguana, a Mexican pub restaurant at Clarke Quay. The food at Cafe Iguana are pretty expensive, mains range from about $20-30, so we usually just have drinks & sometimes, desserts. They have both indoor & outdoor seats, but they only open majority of the outdoor tables at night, because it can get really hot in the day. The indoor seats are not air-conditioned as well, but there are a few fans to keep it cool.Churros ($12)Served with chocolate sauce and cinnamon sugar, with a scoop of avocado ice-cream (you can request to change as it's vanilla bean ice-cream by default). The serving was rather small since 3 of us were sharing, but it was really good. Freshly fried churros, and thick, creamy avocado ice-cream. Definitely worth a try.The price they charge for their house margaritas changes with the time of the day. And in my opinion, they've one of the best margaritas around, and the price is definitely great for a jug, which serves about 2.5 cups per person, for 3 pax. And the best thing about their margaritas is the 9 different flavours that they have, hope to try them all one day. Banana, Blueberry, Kiwi, Lime, Mango, Peach, Pink Guava, Soursop, StrawberryPrices for House Margaritas at Cafe Iguana:1200 - 1500: $221500 - 1800: $301800 - 2000: $392000 - 2300: $552300 - 0100: $39They provide free flow of tortilla chips & salsa dips as well, and we got them straight from the fryer, so it tasted really good. We asked for a total of 3 top ups in total. Up at http://flightplayback.blogspot.com…Read More

A very simple cafe that can be easy to miss given that there are popular cafes such as Chock Full of Beans & Chocolate Origin around. Not much ambience nor decoration, just a space with a fridge, counter, some tables and chairs. Great for a no-fuss dessert but nothing more than that. While having our desserts halfway, there were even spiders on the wall and a beetle on the floor. The staff did nothing but looked at us and laughed. I thought that they could've been more professional to at least clear them up, after seeing us freak out by these insects. Strawberry Crepe ($2.50)Real strawberries, wrapped in fresh cream & a thin crepe. Tastes great, but some may find it a little too creamy, I'm alright with that though.Walnut Carrot Cheesecake ($4.50)It was more of a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and I found the name a little deceiving, was expecting something more surprising that just a normal carrot cake. It was still good though, moist enough and cream cheese was smooth & fragrant, but there's still room for improvement in my opinion.Iced Chamomile Tea ($3)The sugar syrup can be requested to be served on the side. Overall, a bad choice of drink, and I'd rather go back home to have my own TWG chamomile tea. Tasteless, without the fragrance of chamomile, & adding a little of the syrup does nothing but makes the drink tastes like sugar water.Visit http://flightplayback.blogspot.com…Read More

Everything with Fries
2013-10-26
EwF has a fast food concept, but a little more than the usual, which is great for a quick but satisfying meal. Perhaps because they're busy, the staff didn't help to clean the tables & there were food stains from most probably the previous customers.Nutella Tart ($9) A tart of chocolatey goodness, warmed up & accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. I'm not really a big fan of chocolate though. I shared it with a friend, and the portion was just nice for 2. However, I do not really taste the Nutella in this tart, but more of just the usual chocolate. And the vanilla ice-cream was definitely necessary to neutralise the chocolate overdose. However, it's just the usual Nestle kind of ice-cream & I'd prefer if they used vanilla pods to make the ice-cream, which would be even more fragrant. In conclusion, sinfully great for a quick chocolate fix, but won't help much if you're looking for something more. Up at http://flightplayback.blogspot.com…Read More

Wimbly Lu Chocolates
2013-10-26
Wimbly Lu was rather inaccessible, so we took a cab in because we were too lazy to walk. And we were lucky enough to get a seat once we reached, despite the fact that it was a Sunday evening. However, we were given a table for two with an extra stool, which was rather squeeze. There were some sofa seats around & they looked really comfy. The indoor glass room that allowed us to take a look at them prepare some of the desserts, such as the root beer cake, but it was a pity that we were too full to try it.Cappucino ($5)Matcha latte ($5) This drink is always a hit or miss. Think Wimbly Lu has one of the better matcha latte around, but Chock Full of Bean's honey matcha still beats this hand down.Classic Hot Chocolate ($6)Great for dark chocolate lovers, definitely not those typical cafes that end up serving Milo that states "Hot Chocolate" on the menu. Not a fan though, since I don't really like chocolatey stuff that much, except for white chocolate.Waffle, with a scoop of salted caramel ice-cream, drizzled with toffee sauce. ($8.50)I thought that the waffle was great, but perhaps I had really high expectations of it since most reviews were raving about it. The toffee sauce could've been thicker, and I'd prefer if the waffle has a stronger buttery taste. After trying so many waffles, I still think Shokudo (Bugis) has one of the nicest waffles. The ice-cream was great, but the scoop was a tad too small, would have been better if they were more generous with the amount of ice-cream he gave.Up at http://flightplayback.blogspot.com…Read More

Maki-San
2013-10-25
Maki-san has become a staple for me because it's so near to my school. & I've been trying to eat healthy whenever possible, and this provides a really good choice for lunch or dinner. They've two main categories for you to choose from - salad or sushi. I've tried both, & have sworn by their salad now. However, if you're in a rush, this may not be a good choice since each order is custom-made according to the form that you fill in. The queue & waiting time can be rather long during lunch & dinner hours, especially on weekends.Salad ($11.90)Salad, with unagi as the main. I still prefer my roast beef over unagi though. I love how the salad is so filling & if you have it for lunch, it can probably last till a very late dinner. But that's only if you choose the brown rice as the base, because brown rice is really high in fibre & definitely a much better choice if you want to eat clean, as compared to their white counterparts.Sushi ($9.90)Their sushis are not as filling, and guys probably won't find it filling. However, if you choose the brown rice as the base of the sushi, you'll find that the taste is so overwhelming it'll cover the taste of the rest of the ingredients wrapped in it. It can be quite troublesome to eat too, especially if you want to bite it. Overall, I'd recommend the salad as it's more worth it as compared to the sushi. If you're choosing Maki-san as an option to eat healthy or lose weight, please choose the ingredients properly. Do not order those cream-based dressings as they're really high in fat, & for the ingredients, do not choose those tempura ingredients as they're ladened with oil.http://flightplayback.blogspot.com…Read More

A scoop of matcha ice-cream ($3.50)This was my order when I first came here. Thought it tasted quite good, because I'm a matcha lover. But for anyone who doesn't like the taste of green tea, please do not order this, as it can be quite overpowering, especially if you order it with other sweeter flavours like cookies & cream or hazelnut. Gelato Waffle (($7.50)Don't get me wrong, I didn't take a million photos before getting this shot. This was the one and only shot I got of my gelato waffle. I snapped it once the waiter served it on our table. Their ice-cream melted really quickly on the waffle, & was flowing on the waffle when it was served. Honestly, the waffle was really disappointing, as it tasted of nothing but flour. The texture was similar to that of a bakery waffle, without the crisp. No taste of butter, no taste of pandan like those from the local bakeries in the heartland areas. I think I'll settle for just the ice-cream if I ever come back again. Overall, I feel that the ice-cream taste great, but perhaps, just give the waffle a miss. Ice-cream melts really quickly & you'll find yourself rushing through, trying to finish it up before you end up drinking the ice-cream instead. Price is reasonable, and ambience is good. Just beside the river, you get to enjoy the lights if you're going at night, great for a catch up with friends. However, service can definitely be improved. The waiters always seem to be pulling a long face, with very little words, giving a hostile feeling at times. But the great thing is that they do not chase you away after you're done with the ice-cream.Up at http://flightplayback.blogspot.com…Read More

Softcore Bakers
Smoulder
2013-10-25
SMUX Welfare: Smoulder - Softcore BakersAssorted lava cakes for tea is definitely a great choice. Or have them for parties, picnic or even a cheer-me-up for a friend. It's sure to be the talk of the day. However, I find them a tad expensive. $2.80 for a piece, $8.20 for three, & $24 for twelve.Flavours available are:Signature Dark Chocolate, Intense Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate Oreo, White Chocolate Raspberry, White Chocolate Matcha, Milk Chocolate Rum & Raisin, White Chocolate Lemon, Milk Chocolate Mocha, White Chocolate PistachioLook at that soft core, flowy lava of white chocolate & matcha. It had a strong matcha taste, yet far from overwhelming. The white chocolate managed to neutralize out the bitterness of matcha, making it suitable for both people who love & (do not) love matcha. This is great for a quick fix of a molten lava cake craving, but I'd choose a cafe with a great ambience if I really want to enjoy the goodness of a warm lava cake, & perhaps a scoop of ice-cream on the side to go with it.Up at http://flightplayback.blogspot.com…Read More

Chye Seng Huat Hardware
2013-10-25
I've never been a fan of coffee because of the bitter aftertaste & I'd always choose tea over coffee, anytime. But a friend, K, introduced me to Chye Seng Huat Hardware (CSHH) & I fell in love with it. The rustic hardware exterior of the building was so unique and blended in really well with the surroundings. If my friend hasn't been there before, I bet I'd have overlooked it. Ambience was really good, & we had the seats directly facing a really big mirror. I read before that by looking at yourself while having meals, chances of overeating is much lower, I guess I understand why now.The entrance of the cafe. The food came really quickly, in probably less than 5 minutes. Service was efficient too, whenever we finished a dish, they'll clear the plates almost immediately. Cold brew ($7) ordered by K, & my cup of latte ($5.50). Though I can't really appreciate coffee as well as the rest do, I could taste the fragrance of the beans & the bitter aftertaste wasn't as overpowering compared to those I had previously in other cafes. I'll definitely be ordering the cold brew instead next time, it tasted good with two packs of creamer, & the syrup given.Smoked Salmon Blinis ($12): Thin pancakes topped with smoked salmon, cream cheese, pea shoots, onions & chives. One of the better salmon dishes I've had in cafes. Smoked to perfection, & the ratio of pancakes, salad & cream cheese. Perfect. Great pairing.K's Smoked Chicken Wrap ($12): Smoked chicken, mesclun, Japanese cucumber & mango with Thai chilli dressing wrapped in soft tortilla. Tried the chips & thought that the salsa was pretty good, but definitely not as good as those in the Mexican restaurants or cafes. Despite the size, it was really filling according to K. Her favourite in this cafe.Ending with a photo of us & that pretty mirror.Overall, this cafe really made my day, despite having meetings & rushing for projects for the rest of the day. Definitely worth trying, & I don't feel that it's overrated.…Read More
