Hooked on the Sweet Lures at Fish & Co
Fish & Co.
2014-03-14
We were at the mall when we happened to see a Fish & Co banner that there was a birthday month promotion discount on top of a complimentary ice cream, and since it was the birthday month for one of us, we decided to have our lunch at Fish & Co.Spacious with a rustic chic decor that gives it a warm, inviting and cozy atmosphere, we find it ideal enough for us to sit back, relax and enjoy our simple lunch in relative quietness, especially since there was (surprisingly) not many people despite it being lunch time. But that meant that the staff were more attentive to us, which we didn't mind at all. We had a few clarifications about the birthday month promotion and the staff who attended to us was responsive and forthcoming with answers. Although it was quiet, we thought that the service from the bubbly staff kind of liven up the quiet place a little. There are several types of dishes available on their menu, from seafood platters to pasta to baked rice and pizza. But really, the name says it all, it’s all about the seafood here. What we find interesting are the various versions of fish and chips from around the world, such as the New York Fish & Chips ($16.95). We would have love to try several of it, but being undecided, we eventually opted to go for the Best Fish & Chips in Town. Can't really argue when it is named that way!Best Fish & Chips in Town ($15.95)Fresh seafood in a pan! Apparently, the idea of presenting the dish in a pan is inspired from the practices of the fishermen in the Mediterranean Sea, who cooked and ate seafood off the pan while out at sea. The fried fish fillets are indeed quite fresh and the batter coating the fish is quite light and crispy. The fries are also quite crispy and we like that they were not over salted, though funnily enough, I actually kind of like these tasty "chips" more than the "fish" (but that’s just me speaking as a potato lover).Bread ($1.95)It was listed as just "bread" on their menu but we asked and were informed that these are actually seasoned with herbs. Soft and chewy, these bread are light but tasty enough for us. The portion is also quite plentiful and value for money at only $1.95 for a lovely basket of it.Mashed Potato ($2.95)The mashed potato may be a simple side dish elsewhere, but the version here really stands out! The super slick mashed potato is silky smooth and moist with just a slightly chewy edge to it, and the creamy sauce, though a tad too little for the entire mashed potato, complements the potato really well. This is a side dish worth getting!Chocolate Pecan Cluster ($6.95)When you combine moist chocolate cake with layers of gooey caramel and chocolatey brownie cubes spread with a rich chocolate ganache and throw crunchy pecan chunks into the mix, you'll get a treat that is nothing less of sinful. Chewy, crunchy, sweet and rich, this dessert will make the perfect ending to the meal. Oh yes, it's "one bite and you’re hooked!" alright!Complimentary Ice CreamWe weren't sure what to expect of the complimentary ice cream and this turned out to be rather common. Just a single scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a swirl of chocolate syrup and a cherry. The ice cream is quite creamy, but otherwise nothing really special about it.At least there was a discount off our bill, which we appreciated although we find their usual prices to be otherwise pretty much typical of restaurants. The food is quite decent for the price as the seafood at Fish & Co is quite fresh. The sides are actually also quite worth getting, especially the mashed potato. But it's the desserts like the Chocolate Pecan Cluster, aptly called "Sweet Lures" at Fish & Co, that I certainly wouldn’t mind being baited with again! …查看更多

Mixed Vegetable Rice
Chang Cheng Chinese Mixed Vegetable Rice
2014-03-14
There are actually quite a few Chang Cheng Chinese Mixed Vegetable Rice branches around Woodlands area and I was surprised to spot another branch at Food Republic. There is a wide variety of food here to suit every taste. Wanting something filling but not too heavy in taste, I opted for a simple meal of steamed egg, potato, fried tofu and a slice of omelette to go with the rice.Rice with 3 Vegetables + 1 Meat ($5.30)The food is quite decent here. The potato and fried tofu in particular are flavourful and the slice of omelette is pretty big for its price. The rice though, is a little too hard for my liking. At $5.30 for a meal, this is a little pricey since you can get an equally filling packet of mixed vegetable rice elsewhere for cheaper, but for a food court, I suppose this is considered typical, and it is also convenient if you are at the mall!…查看更多

Deserving of its "King of Gyoza" Title
Osaka Ohsho
2014-02-20
'The King of Gyoza in Osaka' - that's what the name "Osaka Ohsho" translates to. With such a title, one is naturally tempted to check it out and find out if it lives up to its name as a "gyoza specialist".The exterior of the outlet is dressed in a classic display of black, with two display counters outside showcasing colourful models of the food. Upon closer peek into the interior, we were glad to find that it didn't look as intimidating as we had expected of a "king". The environment and ambience are casual enough for anyone and everyone from all walks of life to enjoy a nice meal in.We went on a weekend at lunch time and the place was crowded. Fortunately, a seat was available so we were seated pretty much quickly. There is a tablet on the table where you can key in and submit your order to the kitchen for processing. Quite an easy and fuss-free way to order especially during peak hours. But even with the crowd, the service is prompt and the staff are courteous and attentive. We had a few queries about some of the dishes on their menu and the guy who attended to us was patient and responsive, so much that we kind of felt bad for 'bothering' him. Gotta give the guy a cooki... er, gyoza for service!Fried Chicken with Tartar Sauce Set ($13.90) The set comes with a main plate of fried chicken with tartar sauce, a bowl of rice as well as 3 of their signature gyoza and a bowl of soothing egg soup. Not too bad a value for the price of $13.90. The fried chicken is not as crispy as we would have liked, but the chicken pieces are well-marinated and very succulent. The tasty pieces are simply a total delight to eat with the generous portion of creamy, sweet and tangy tartar sauce, which is so good that I even used it to dip a few of the gyoza with! It was a sad day for us to find the portion of the chicken given to be a tad too little to share between us, heh. Fuwatoro Chicken Tenshin Han Set ($13.90) This perfect combination of sticky and fluffy Koshihikari rice generously doused with a velvety smooth and lightly savoury gravy, and then blanketed with a thick, soft and fluffy omelette is one dish not to be missed if you are at Osaka Ohsho. Despite being drenched in the gravy, the rice remained firm and not soggy. The chopped fried chicken bits inside add a bit of texture to the rice, but frankly I'd have preferred to get it without the chicken just to savour the smooth, velvety texture of rice, gravy and egg! I was initially intimidated by the generous portion of rice at first glance, but I simply couldn't stop popping in mouthful after mouthful of this addictive dish that simply hits the spot on every bite. The amazing, heartwarming Fuwatoro Tenshin Han is a definite must-try! Gyoza ($3.90 for 6, $7.80 for 12)Surely the highlight of the meal! It'd be a sin to visit the "King of Gyoza in Osaka" and not try their gyoza which they are renowned for. Although the sets also come with gyoza, you simply can't get enough of these handmade dumplings that are skilfully grilled to golden brown perfection with a delicious crisp on the outside and a moist, tender inside. The skin, made of their own special wonton wrapper, is delicate but sturdy enough to hold the filling without breaking apart too easily upon picking up with the chopsticks, while the filling, with a combination of cabbage, ginger, garlic and finely minced pork, is juicy, flavourful and succulent. Highly recommended!Houji Cha (Hot & Cold) ($1.00 each) There's nothing like a cup of steaming hot tea after a filling meal. Light and mild with a very slight roasted flavour, the Houji tea complements the flavourful meals well. I like the hot tea better over the cold version, as the ice will dilute the flavour of the already mild tasting tea. Plus there is no better way to end a heartwarming meal, like the Tenshin Han, with a warming cup of tea!Overall, there is not a dish we ordered here that we didn't like (although some might find the Houji Cha a tad bland) and we find their other dishes like the Fried Chicken with Tartar sauce to be quite tasty as well. But the ones that stand out the most are the Fuwatoro Tenshin Han and Gyoza. The Fuwatoro Tenshin Han, in particular, is the most memorable for me and I can't wait for the next time to savour it again, with the gyoza of course! The pricing of the food here is quite reasonable for a Japanese restaurant and the set meals, which usually come with gyoza as well, are quite worth it, though you may find yourself wanting more, in which case, the gyoza are at a rather affordable price of just $3.90 for 6 or $7.80 for 12!It'd be a pity not to check out this king at least once if you are a fan of Japanese food and gyoza. Osaka Ohsho is certainly deserving of its title! …查看更多

A Mix of Asia on Your Plate
Just Acia
2014-02-18
Red and loud, that was my first impression of Just Acia, which offers Asian dishes from the "Best of Asia" at "great value". While the decor is attention grabbing, I find the environment, with the somewhat casual canteen-style seating arrangements, to be suitable for groups of friends and family to have a nice, chatty meal together. There were not much people when we went on a weekend mid-afternoon, so we were seated pretty quickly by the friendly staff and given a piece of order form for our orders. Basically, you just write the quantity of the items you want on the order form and bring it up to the counter to place your order and pay for it.The food offering here is a fusion of Asian influences, with most of it being Chinese, Korean, Japanese and some Thai. There are set meals featuring the standard Asian staple, the rice, as well as noodle like the Japanese udon or ramen. Alternatively, there are also Western-style pasta sets for something a little more diverse, like the Spaghetti Aglio Olio with Chicken Teriyaki set. We decided to get the Steamed Dumpling Rice Set for ourselves. This was a late lunch and we were hungry, so we also ordered a few sides before our main sets came.Samosa ($0.90 for 4) First dish to come to our table. And yes, it's only $0.90 for 4 pieces! The skin is quite crispy with a crunch to it and the curry-tasting flavour is aromatic but not overwhelming.Deep Fried Chicken (Small) ($3.10)A rather tasty treat, the chicken is very crispy with a slightly powdery batter on the skin. The meat is quite juicy and I like that the oil has been well-drained and it didn't come across as too oily.Steamed Dumpling Set ($6.30)There is really a mix of Asia in this set, with a set of dumplings, a bowl of white rice, miso soup, and a side of kimchi. The dumplings are decent but the skin, though slightly chewy, is a tad too fragile. It breaks apart easily upon picking up, but the dumplings are quite soupy on the inside. We also like the miso soup, which is full flavoured and not diluted like some soup I've tasted elsewhere. The coffee, soft drinks and ice cream that come with the set are free flow. There are two types of ice cream here. The soft serve ice cream is nothing to scream about as it is not very smooth and feels a little like finely crushed ice. But the ice cream from the tubs, with a variety of flavours like cookies and cream, peppermint and strawberry, fare slightly better with its creamy texture. For better tasting beverage and dessert, feel free to mix both soft drink and ice cream together to make your own ice cream float! At just $6.30 for the dumpling set meal with free flow drinks and ice cream, it is really quite a steal. While the main set and the free flow ice cream are more than filling enough for the average diner, we find that it is also worth spending a little more to get extra sides like the tasty Deep Fried Chicken to go with the meal (maybe cut back on the ice cream a little to make space for the sides, although we still went for two helpings of ice cream each!). Even with sides, each of us paid less than $10.00 for a complete meal here. And despite sharing the sides among us, we still left the place feeling very bloated! Service is also not bad here. The staff are friendly and quite helpful with queries. While paying at the counter, we asked if the samosa contained any meat like beef. The staff wasn't sure and we thought that was the end of it, but he took the effort to go and check with the kitchen for us, which we appreciated. And they don't even charge service charge here! All in all, the food is decent enough for the price (and certainly very filling). If you are undecided on the type of cuisine to have for lunch or dinner, you can consider Just Acia to get a mix of Asia on your plate!…查看更多

Affordable Breads at Champion Bread
Champion Bread
2014-02-16
This halal bakery is rather small, but there is quite a variety of freshly baked breads available here. There are the standard size buns like Apple Bun ($1.20), Cheese Sausage ($1.30) and Chicken Burger ($1.50), but if you want something lighter, they also have smaller sized buns like Chicken Ham, Chilli Prawn or Red Bean bun at the very affordable price of $0.50. Also spotted here are baguettes, muffins and slices of local cakes like pandan cake. The breads are mostly placed outside the shop, in covered display units, due to the lack of space in the shop. The bakery may seem rather cramped and cluttered on first impression, but the breads here are quite decent. US Sausage Bun ($1.20)This not only looks good with the unique honeycomb markings on the surface of the bread, but it also tastes equally good. The bread is quite soft and the US sausage is tasty and quite springy to chew on. I find this to be quite worth the price of $1.20 and will definitely buy this again. Nutella Bun ($1.30)After the US Sausage bun, this was a bit of a let down, maybe because I had high expectations for this especially due to its namesake. The bread is soft as well, but there is no Nutella taste. Instead, there is just a slight sprinkling of chocolate bits over the bun, which isn't very chocolatey in taste either. However, the almond slices (instead of hazelnut) contribute to the nutty flavour to the bread and also add quite a fair bit of crunchiness. The name "Almond Chocolate Bun" is probably more accurate for it. Portuguese Egg Tart ($1.30)The egg tart costs more than quite a number of their buns but it is quite decent overall. The egg tart is flaky and egg custard has a smooth and creamy texture. It is also lightly sweet, just enough to taste but not too much to overwhelm. Overall, the prices for the buns are affordable and many are in the range of $1.20 to $1.60 for the bigger ones like the burgers. Service is also quite acceptable here. Taste-wise, there are some hits and misses, but I think overall, it is generally quite decent. It'd have been nice if there are more variety of other pastries and baked goods like cakes to choose from.…查看更多

Vegetarian Kway Chap
Tanaka Vegetarian - Food Loft @306
2014-02-16
The Tanaka Vegetarian Food stall has quite a number of vegetarian dishes being offered on their menu, such as Kway Chap ($2.50/$3.00), Nasi Lemak ($2.80), Mee Rebus ($2.50), Chicken Rice ($2.80), Laksa ($2.50) and Lor Mee ($2.50). Like an economy rice stall, there is also quite an array of add-on dishes being offered if you want something extra to go with your food, like vegetables, mock char siew, mock fishballs, and so on.We decided to come here for a late breakfast on a weekend morning and it was brisk business at this self-service stall. I was rather glad to see that the Kway Chap was available. But there was a rather long queue and we had to wait for quite a while until it was our turn. Vegetarian Kway Chap for 2 ($4.00) + Mock Ham Add-on ($0.50)The kway chap is priced at $2.50 or $3.00 for a single serving, but we got it for 2 person, which cost us $4.00. The kway chap noodle is quite smooth and I like that the soup is flavourful but not oily. The kway chap comes with firm beancurd, fried beancurd, and a braised egg. We only realized that the mock "intestine" was missing from our plate when we brought the food to the table. Serving size feels a little small for two person, but the portion of noodle given is quite plentiful. We also added the mock ham at the rather affordable price at $0.50 for a whole slice, which is quite chewy and tasty to boot!Overall, the food is quite decent in taste, and the prices for both main dishes and add-on are quite reasonable. I wouldn't mind returning again for another round, but maybe when they are slightly less busy.…查看更多

Pancake King
2014-02-16
The "Pancake King" stall at this coffee shop is just a small stall, with only the Min Chiang Kueh and Crispy Pancake on their menu. We went on a weekend morning and it was brisk business here at the stall. Each pancake costs $0.80 per piece, while the crispy pancake costs $1.40. If you wish to add additional ingredients, it will cost an extra $0.20 each. Other than peanut, there are also other flavours like red bean paste, coconut, and cheese. But the original peanut version is still the popular one. Min Chiang Kueh / Peanut Pancake ($0.80 each)These tasty pancakes are thick, but soft, slightly moist and spongy! The crushed peanuts filling is not too sweet and there is a nice roasted peanut aroma. We thought it could do with a little more peanut filling though. Best eaten hot to enjoy the crispy edges! The pancakes, especially the peanut version, are really quite fast selling so there may be a need to wait for quite a while for the uncle to make a new batch if there is not enough supply to meet demand. But on the plus side, this means that you get to enjoy the pancakes piping hot and freshly made! Certainly worth the wait! …查看更多

Bubble Tea at Sweet Talk
Sweet Talk
2014-02-16
The weather has been pretty hot lately and it is one of days when we are so glad for bubble tea shops like Sweet Talk in the heartlands! This is just a small, nondescript shop located next to a coffee shop but they have the usual bubble tea series of Green or Red Tea, Milk Tea and Ice Blended in a variety of flavours like Strawberry, Banana, Caramel and so on. There are also bubble tea versions of Desserts like Mango Sago ($1.60) and Chendol ($1.60). People wanting a respite from the hot weather can also consider the series of Fresh Juices like Watermelon Juice ($1.80) or Traditional Beverages like Bandung ($1.20) and Chin Chow ($1.00). Prices are mostly $2.00 and below here, and additional toppings like Aloe Vera, Black Pearls, Green Apple Jelly and so on is just an additional $0.30 per topping. I think they really give the coffee shop beverage stall next door a run for their money! Chendol ($1.60)Local dessert in a cup! This is quite milky and sweet. We enjoy the taste of Chendol in this refreshing drink. There is a fair amount of tasty ingredients like jelly and red bean included at the bottom and it is also quite filling for a drink. Blue Coral Ice Blended ($1.50)Like the Chendol, this is equally refreshing. It is also fairly milky but is a little too sweet for my taste. We love the shade of blue with the frothy ice on top though! Service is quite good, the staff is quite friendly and made sure to double confirm with us the orders to make the drinks exactly the way we want it. Prices are definitely affordable at this outlet and I'd recommend getting a drink here if you want more beverages choices than the coffee shop next door offers! …查看更多

Quality Western Food in the Heartlands
Astons
2014-02-15
Astons is one of those well-known names known for offering tasty, quality western fare at competitive prices, giving many of the more pricey restaurants a run for their money. They have an "Express" branch at Woodlands, at a nondescript coffee shop just a stone’s throw away from Marsiling MRT. I must admit that I was rather surprised at the choice of location, but I am rather glad for it. More quality food in the heartlands? Why not? Chargrill Chicken ($7.50) - with Baked Potato and Onion RingsAt first glance, we thought that the portion size of the chicken is pretty small. However, the chicken meat, which is slightly pinkish, is really very tender and succulent. The sauce is light, but goes well with the chicken meat. You can choose two sides to go with the meat so this actually has the potential to be a healthy meal depending on the sides you choose. We initially wanted to get the Pasta Salad as a side but it wasn't available so we swapped for the not-so healthy onion rings. On hindsight, we should have gotten the potato salad instead. Nevertheless, the onion rings are quite decent although it'd be perfect if the rings are slightly crispier. The soft baked potato would make a healthy companion to the chicken as well if not for that big dollop of butter on it. We only smeared a pinch of the butter on the potato to add a little more flavour and ditched the rest of it. Hickory BBQ Chicken ($7.50) - with Mashed Potato and French FriesLike the Chargrill Chicken, the chicken here is equally tender and succulent. But of the sauces, the Hictory BBQ sauce wins hands down. It is sweet and very flavoursome and both of us like Hickory BBQ Chicken more. However, we both agree that there should be more of the sauce to go with the meat as we ran out of sauce to dip the chicken in even before the end of our meal. The mashed potato is also quite good and we enjoy the smooth, creamy potato with its tasty sauce. The french fries are quite okay, we like that it is flavoured with powdered seasoning instead of salt, but it'd be better if they are served piping hot or even warm rather than cold.Cream of Mushroom ($3.00)The Cream of Mushroom is thick and very creamy, with generous bits of chopped mushroom in it. It also comes with two slices of crispy garlic bread which are quite tasty when dipped and eaten with the cream of mushroom. I adore the texture of this soup but some might find it too creamy after a few mouthfuls. The portion is not big either, but it will make a wonderful complement to their grilled chicken for a more tasty and filling meal. Overall, I’d recommend getting the chicken from their "Grillworks Chicken" series, especially the Hickory BBQ Chicken for the flavoursome sauce. Sides worth getting are the mashed potato, potato salad and baked potato, sans butter. It is also worth getting the Cream of Mushroom to pair up with the meal, especially if you are a big eater as the portion of the chicken can be a tad small. Prices may be pricey for a coffee shop but definitely value for money for quality western food, and there is no service charge to pay here (GST is already included in the prices). That you can also get to choose your own sides is another bonus point for us. However, the food may take quite some time to prepare even during non-peak hours, but the service is generally quite decent and the staff are friendly and helpful with queries and recommendations. Environment is so-so, considering this is located at a coffee shop, but in our opinion, the food is worth coming for!…查看更多

We heard so much about the Chococro here, so when we were in the area, we took the chance to check out the cafe when we passed by before lunch. Warmly decorated with classic wooden tables and chairs, the place seems cozy and inviting enough for us to chill out here. But we decided to come back later after completing our shopping instead. Bad mistake. By the time we came back at tea time, the place was crowded and fully seated and we had to wait around for quite some time for an empty seat, and then we had to join a long queue for our food.On the bright side, desserts lovers will love it here. There are quite a variety of beverages, breads and pastries, and desserts here, such as the chococros, parfaits, and ice cream! We were spoilt for choice as there were so many items that we wanted to try, but in the end, we just went with a few of their signature items instead. White Chococro ($2.60) & Chococro ($2.40)Both Chococro are smaller than what is expected for the price, but they are quite a treat to have. The croissants are flaky and crispy with a rich buttery flavour and the chocolate filling for the original Chococro is quite rich and slightly bittersweet to taste. The White Chococro is slightly sweeter due to the icing powder which add a touch of sweetness to the croissant, but I personally prefer the original Chococro for the richer chocolate taste. Choco Banana Fuji ($7.30)A perfect combination of soft serve ice cream on freshly baked butter danish pastry topped with smooth chocolate sauce! The soft serve ice cream is smooth, creamy and milky while the delicious butter danish pastry is very crispy on the outside but fluffy and buttery on the inside. This dessert is also topped with banana slices as well, which are a little too sweet for both of us, but otherwise we both find this Fuji pretty good!Matcha Latte ($6.00)The Matcha Latte here is quite thick and creamy and I find the aroma and taste of fresh milk quite strong. It is just the right amount of sweetness for me though, with a tinge of bitterness and the distinct taste of matcha! On the whole, we find the food here pretty good based on the few we had. The latte is fresh and aromatic while the chococro and fuji are sweet and delightful. I'd definitely love to return again to try the other desserts on their menu, like the parfaits. Prices are quite standard for a cafe, but there is a further 10% e-coupon discount if you sign up as a member by going to a link scanned from a QR code at a sign near the counter. Service is quite decent and despite the queue, the staff remained friendly and helpful with our queries regarding the 10% sign-up discount. I only regretted that we didn't dine in earlier when we had the chance to, when the place is less hectic and the ambience more relaxing to chill out in. …查看更多

Adorable Panda Pau
Mama Panda Kitchen
2014-02-15
One word: cute panda pau (okay, that's three).Definitely a crowd pulling item. Despite having read some really "blah" reviews about the food here and knowing this to be a tourist trap, we still decided to walk into it and get the too-cute-to-resist panda pau to try. Mama Panda Kitchen is a cross between a restaurant and fast food outlet. The Chinese-inspired decor here with lanterns and bamboo dividers is something you might expect in dim sum restaurants. But the environment here is more casual and instead of giving your orders to waiters who will bring the food to your table, you have to join a snaking queue to order and collect your food at the service counters, much like a fast food outlet. Panda Chocolate Custard Pau ($2.90) Since this was just newly released when we went, we tried this first. The panda pau here are designed to imitate the face of a panda and they are served up in bamboo containers dim-sum style. Unfortunately, the chocolate custard pau we got was a flop. The bun was too damp and felt too sticky and clammy. The chocolate custard filling is actually quite decent, but there is too little of it and its flavour could not redeem the rest of it enough. Panda Pau (Red Bean) ($2.90)This is way better than the chocolate custard pau. The texture is soft and spongy and not damp or sticky like the chocolate pau. The red bean filling is also quite decent and not too sweet. This made us wonder if the failed chocolate pau was a one-off and we were just unlucky enough to get a bad batch. Unlike the chocolate pau, we enjoyed this. But some may find the price tag of $2.90 to be a tad tough to swallow.Spring Roll (2 for $3.90)Unlike the cute panda pau, presentation is so-so for this. Even so, this is among one of the lower priced items on their menu. The spring rolls are quite crispy though, with a nice crunch to the skin, but we find the grated filling to be a tad mushy for our liking.Mango Pudding ($2.90)The mango pudding here is rather creamy, not very smooth. It feels more like mousse to us. You can taste the mango flavour easily enough but unfortunately, I am not really that keen on it overall.Soft Drink (Iced Lemon Tea) in Souvenir Cup ($3.90)Many will probably baulk at paying $3.90 for just a cup of run-of-the-mill lemon tea. But wait! The soft drink here comes in a plastic panda-print souvenir cup with straw which you can bring home as a keepsake or to reuse. You can choose from a selection of Coke, Coke Light, Sprite, Soya Milk, Ice Lemon Tea and Fanta Grape. For $3.90, it is indeed pricey for a drink but certainly one of the cheapest and decent Panda related souvenir around that you can get in comparison to the other items at the Panda souvenir shop! Long story short, the food at Mama Panda are really quite over priced especially for the mains like the Shanghai Wanton Ramen Set ($15.90) which is really quite pricey even with the extras it comes with. I'd recommend just going for the snacks instead. Items not to be missed are the panda pau. The pau may be pretty much standard tasting and is also pricey to boot, but seriously, what the heck, everyone is still going to get it to try anyway, so just get it. Resistance is futile when it comes to adorable looking panda pau that look up at you with doleful eyes when you open the container! That, and get the soft drink in souvenir cups for a "decently priced" souvenir!…查看更多

A Japanese Bakery, Yamazaki
Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude
2014-02-14
I am especially fond of Japanese bakeries. So when I heard of Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude, and that their most of their ingredients and recipes are from Japan, I knew I had to check it out!The exterior of the bakery looks quite spacious from the outside, but the interior, with its somewhat rustic-looking decor, is smaller than expected. Despite this, they have a decent variety of bread available, many of which I was actually keen to try. But I couldn't finish so many and I didn't want to keep them for too many days so I mulled around for a bit trying to decide on a few to try. Walking around the bakery, I was glad to see that there is a small counter at the back containing a few baskets of bread samples to try out. The Hawaiian bread was among one of those samples and I was totally sold on my first bite of this bread! Hawaiian Bread ($1.50) Superbly soft and fluffy, even the outer crust layer is thin and soft as well. This is also mildly sweet in taste. I love bread that are good to eat on its own and the Hawaiian bread here definitely falls into this category. Although you can eat it with jam or other fillings, its subtle flavour is really best appreciated by eating it plain, or with just a dash of butter. Highly recommended!Snow Chocolate ($1.20)This special Hokkaido soft bun is kind of a cross between a cake and a bread, based on the description for its Snow Custard counterpart. The bread itself is quite soft but the top of the bread is slightly crusty and a little crumbly. I like the smooth chocolate custard filling which is quite chocolatey but not too sweet. Chocolate Cream Puff ($1.80)This scores just by looks alone. Just look at the generous, whooping amount of smooth and fresh chocolate cream sandwiched between the puff pastry! It may seem a bit daunting eating all that cream, but this cream puff is unexpectedly light, fluffy and not cloyingly sweet. Best of all, it's only $1.80. Certainly worth a try, but recommend not to store it for too long before eating.Chocolate Chip Waffle ($1.50)The waffle is very crispy on the outside but somewhat crumbly inside; it kind of feels like biting into an oversized cookie. But taste-wise, it is surprisingly good. The addition of the chocolate chips is also a nice touch to the waffle for that extra bit of sweetness.Chocolate Fudge Slice ($4.00)The selection of cakes here is quite limited, but I wanted to try the cakes from Yamazaki so I just rolled with this. The sponge cake layer is ...spongy but a little dry although this is redeemed by the smooth and rich chocolate fudge layer. A pretty decent cake overall, but I didn't find it particularly memorable. On the whole, I am quite pleased with my first purchase at Yamazaki, especially the bread and pastries. My favourite from this trip is the Hawaiian Bread, which is worth a try and definitely worth buying again! I also enjoy the Chocolate Puff and Snow Custard as well. The prices for most of their bread are very reasonable and affordable, and service, while not spectacular, is decent. I’m already planning a return trip to try out their other bread. But do note that the selection of bread may be somewhat limited if you go early in the morning when they are just opened (around 10am). I went around 11am and quite a number of bread slots were still empty, so you might want to consider going just slightly later when most of the bread, which are freshly baked daily, will be fresh out of the oven! …查看更多

Ikea Restaurant: Affordable and Family-centric
Ikea Cafe
2014-02-14
The Ikea restaurant at the Tampines branch is a lot bigger than the Alexandra branch, with a bigger dining area and plentiful of seats. The self-service food counter area is also slightly more spacious to allow for smoother human flow. The place is dressed in a casual, modern style, with clean arrangement of simple, classic furniture and artsy overhead lamps. Colours are mostly kept to the minimum here, except maybe for the children corner. This may make the place look a little sterile, but I find the simplistic beauty of their minimalist decor endearing, especially when there are not much people around and it is quiet. We went before 10am (the restaurant opens at 9.30am although the store itself opens at 10am) when there is not much crowd yet so we could just sit where we like and enjoy our breakfast in relative peace. We opted for a seat nearer to the windows where natural sunlight bathes the area in a light, warm glow. The family next to us even took the opportunity to chill out together over their breakfast and the morning papers, giving meaning to the term "family bonding". Even before I get my food, I'm already liking this place. Pancakes with Scrambled Egg and Hashbrown ($3.00)The pancakes feel a little dense but are otherwise soft and slightly buttery. The scrambled egg is a little wet but not runny. Add a little salt here and a little pepper there for a little more flavour. I like the hashbrown best. They are crispy, tasty and not so oily. At only $3.00, we all agree that this set is really quite reasonably priced.Garlic Bread (2 for $1.00)Generously seasoned with garlic spread, these slices of garlic bread are tasty enough to eat on their own or to get as an add-on to your meal or cup of tea or coffee. We like this enough to consider getting a bunch of it to make up a "loaf" to eat on its own in future.New York Cheesecake ($3.80)Dense, heavy and creamy, the cheesecake is quite a treat. It is not too sweet, but cheesy with a tease of lemon zest. The thin cracker base feels a little wet, but overall this is pretty decent for the price. It feels quite rich on first bite. My favourite next to the cinnamon roll!Cinnamon Roll ($1.20)Not just my favourite but also my family's. The cinnamon roll is sweet, soft and chewy with a slight crispy glazed outer crust. The scent and taste of cinnamon is also pretty strong, making this a rather flavourful treat. Recommended!Coffee ($0.50) & Tea ($0.50)Make your choice from a cup of decent coffee or Dilmah Ceylon black tea, which comes from a teabag, at the low price of only 50 cents. The best part is that they are refillable and you can make them as sweet as you like with the sugar or cream sachets at the condiments counter. As usual, the food are very reasonably priced with some really value-for-money items on their menu. It helps that the decor and availability of seats here are really much better than the Alexandra branch. Service is also quite decent and the staff are generally friendly and helpful with (our) queries. We enjoyed our dining experience here, not only for the affordable but tasty food but also for the family-centric environment and experience. Do go early to take advantage of the peace before the crowd (and noise!) starts trickling in. It will start to get progressively hectic, especially during peak hours. For us, it's definitely worth getting up earlier to enjoy a nice breakfast here with the family! …查看更多

Pezzo Pizza
Pezzo
2014-02-13
Their tagline is "a carnival in every bite". Not only does Pezzo aim to do that by introducing exciting pizza flavours like the Sambal Ikan Bilis, but the outlets are also typically designed in a colorful carnival-style decor to imitate the fun and lively atmosphere of a carnival. This is similarly the case for the outlet here at Woodlands Xchange. The place here is small, although there is a limited amount of seats for dining in. We decided to dine in to try their pizza. There are two pizza series here at Pezzo. The Carnival series costs $4.50 per slice and comes in flavours like Cheesey Cheese, Italiano Chicken and BBQ Bonanza, while the Gala series costs $4.90 per slice and comes in flavours like Fisherman Favourite, Meat Munchers and Hot Chick. We decided to get one flavour from each series to try. However, the selection was quite limited when we went, with the counter looking a little bare due to the dwindling pizza slices left. Carnival Series: Hola Hawaiian ($4.50)The Hawaiian pizza has turkey ham and bacon with pineapples cubes topped with melted cheddar and mozzarella cheese. The toppings, especially for the ham, are quite plentiful. The pizza is also lightly sweet from the pineapple cubes, and I like the combination of melted cheese on top which is quite cheesy.Gala Series: Chicken Delight ($4.90)This Chicken Delight pizza aims to please chicken lovers with a decent portion of chicken breast strips and turkey bacon with onions and mushrooms as toppings. The bacon feels slightly overcooked and dry but the chicken meat is very meaty and tender. But while the toppings are plentiful, I didn't exactly find the taste to be particularly exciting, or as they say, a "carnival in every bite". Between the two, we were actually expecting the pizza from the Gala series to be more tasty, considering that it costs more than the Carnival series. But I actually prefer the Hola Hawaiian from the Carnival series for the slightly sweeter and more flavourful taste overall. However, the quality of ingredients used on the Chicken Delight from the Gala series, especially the meaty chicken breast strips, deserves a thumb up too. The crust for both pizza is pretty thick but it is quite puffy, soft and slightly chewy. However, I suspect that some might find the crust too thick in proportion to the toppings. I personally prefer the crust slightly thinner, but nevertheless, these are still quite okay for us. But do take note if you are not keen on pizza with thick crusts and prefer your pizza with thinner crust.Italian Soda: Strawberry ($2.00)We also got their Italian Soda to try. The Italian Soda also comes in other flavours like Grape and Green Apple. We opted for Strawberry. The soda is pretty fizzy with a tinge of bitterness especially on first taste and the strawberry syrup couldn't make it sweet enough for us. The portion is also pretty small and we thought that this was something we could have done without. It'd have actually been nice to have some sides to go with the pizza for a more filling meal, but the sides, like garlic bread, which are listed on their website are not available in the outlet here. The soft serve ice cream, which is supposedly available according to a sign at the front of this shop, was also not available when we were there. But despite the disappointment, the pizzas are quite decent and I'd recommend trying the Hola Hawaiian. The price is standard for a pizza slice, and the service here is also acceptable.…查看更多

Not Just Strudel Here
Ritz Apple Strudel
2014-02-13
Ritz is known for their apple strudels which also come in flavours like strawberry, mango, blueberry, durian and peach. I decided to try something different and opted for the apple crumble when I saw it in the display counter. I also got the mini chocolate eclairs to share with the family. Apple Crumble ($4.50)Generously stuffed with soft, juicy apple filling encrusted in a crumbly and crunchy crust, this treat is an enjoyable mixture of contrasting texture in each bite. The apple filling with huge chunks of softened apple is so juicy that some of the juice may ooze out and soak the base of the pastry, which could unfortunately cause the bottom to be a little wet and soggy. This was the case for my apple crumble, but fortunately, the taste wasn't much affected. I like that the sweetness of Ritz's apple crumble comes mostly from the apple filling. I also couldn't get enough of the tasty and crunchy crust, especially the crumbly top!Mini Eclairs (6 for $3.50)These bite-sized treats are quite decent too! The puff pastry is thin, and it is generously stuffed with soft, silky smooth cream inside. It is not very sweet either, with the chocolate layer on top contributing to most of the sweetness. The rest of the family also gave these the thumb up.Prices for the strudels (and crumble) are mostly around $4++ to $5++ for the smallest size, which can be a little on the pricey side, but the portion of strudel is quite big even for the smallest portion, which would be good for sharing as a dessert or a snack. It'd be nice if there are more variety of other pastries to try at this outlet though!…查看更多
