I went with sis & b-i-l to lim joo hin teochew porridge at bukit ho swee for lunch on 16.1.2015. :-) I had not been here like forever, maybe 10 years? reason is I always feel that teochew porridge is ultra expensive for nothing food. Well, today was no exception, just a confirmation, so in a sense i was not overly disappointed since already expecting it to be so! strange psychology! The place was bright & clean. not crowded yet at 12pm. The servers were rude in terms of mannerisms & unhelpful as I felt they were ignoring me.The mullet 乌鱼 was still moist so soft. this not the usual teochew style, her bun 鱼饭 or teochew chilled cooked fish should be cold & dry. meat was sweet & nice dipped in taojeo (bean paste), overall just average. unlike cold crab, we can do this easily at home ourselves. The braised duck was ok average. my own braised duck though is a lot better, more “pang” i.e. tasty. The “kor” her -this method of braising fish is rarely seen nowadays. the fish tasted like sardine (likely was) which was very different fish from the ones my grandma made 50yrs ago. the dish was just slight sour due to the sour dried veg, i think, which made it very appetising. The vegetables were nice, especially the leek & “chiu kuay”, a gourd (my sis added 2 veg dishes later – “heng chye” spinach & “chiu kuay”). 3pax lunch cost S$47.40 for eating almost nothing. I am never coming back – well, maybe another 10yrs! ^^See my full reviews & photos at = http://chefquak.com/2015/01/17/expensive-mediocre-teochew-porridge-lim-joo-hin-eating-house-on-16jan2015/ continue reading

Lim Joo Hin is one of the famous Teochew Porridge Stalls that I have ever come across in Tiong Bahru area. They are holding up 2 units of space with some outdoor seats available. One would probably get carried away and spend a long time in front of the stove to choose from the wide arrays of dishes lined up! My previous visits had left big impressions as the lady boss was rather fiery and grumpy. Thus we try avoiding her for any order and go to her helpers instead. After making selections, we were told that the dishes will be send right to our table and were asked to have the seat first.Within minutes after the order, a thin old man with grey hair who spoke the traditional and fluent Teochew carried a tray full of dishes and walked towards us. He placed the dish one by one onto our table. Service was prompt and good.I am not a fishcake fan especially when it comes to such white traditional white cakes but this is great. Their fishcake was smooth, bouncy and biting on them makes it effortless.Chye Poh (Preserved Vegetables) Egg Omelette was tasty but I find that the sweetness level was abit on a high side and concluded that sugar was added during the cooking process. However this Chye Poh fillings are rather light in taste and the dish blends in well with a bowl of plain porridge.Lim Joo Hin has a special way of serving the "Lala" (calms) dish. These shells were cooked with fermented beans and abit of spiciness. What's the characteristics of a Teochew porridge? You will know after slurping down this warm bowl of porridge. The teochew porridge is not those gluey porridge nor the gluey congee we normally have. One will get to see and taste the soften rice grains under the "am" (In Dialect, the chalky layer of water content which is supposing to be cooling to the body) Another noteworthy item of Lim Joo Hin's is its braised duck. The duck was tender drenched in right amount of sweet black sauce adorned by the leafy greens of coriander. Portions of lean meat as well as some fatty meats can be found on the duck. The braised Chap Chai was soft and tasty, till the extend that a toothless person can consume them without any issue. The cabbages were braised together with carrot as well as Dong Fen (Vermicelli)In conclusion, I found find that its pricey and there is one 24 hours Porridge stall in the district that may sell about half its pricing. However, this may be a quick alternative as the other stall is usually pack with people and takes up some waiting time.Cost: S$24.20 continue reading

Not the most conducive environment. But one of the better Teochew porridge I have tasted. Orders to be made at the counter with a wide selection of dishes to choose from. After that, you can choose a seat (they have seats on the outside, in the shop where you choose your dishes as well as next door) and they will serve to you. Had the porridge for dinner so it was a little crowded. Good for those who like a light dinner which is not too oily. I like how watery the porridge is. continue reading

We came here for dinner & ordered some minced pork, giam chye, chai poh omelette, & braised meat The food here is pretty good, definitely a good choice for a late dinner or supper. If some of the dishes are slightly bland, the chili dipping sauce mixed with some light soya sauce delivers just enough of a sourish kick to spice everything up.But the place is not very clean The guy served my porridge with his thumb in it Overall i rate 8/10 continue reading

This stall is located near Zouk, therefore you can see alot of "chiongster" at wee hours. Nevertheless, I went to visit the stall during lunchtime and it was not so packed as compared to late night period. I ordered the sweet sour pork, steamed egg and fried potato along with my rice. I love the steam egg as it is very tender and melts in my mouth. The only thing i don't like is the attitude of their staff. They were quite reluctant to serve me initially when I said I want to order rice instead of porridge. Perhaps they will charge me more if I had porridge instead. continue reading
