After a long hiatus of almost 7 years, we were back again at Peach Garden @ 33 for lunch. My last dim sum experience with the Peach Garden brand was rather mediocre so my hopes weren't high.Carpeted floors, plush fabric seats and wooden paneling; classic decor of a slightly more upmarket Chinese restaurant. Comfortable but nothing out of the ordinary. Window seats are of course much sought after but those need to be booked a little in advance, something which we failed to do.Seafood Soup in Melon - The old cucumber soup (老黄瓜汤) was nicely presented in a tall cucumber with its center carved out. Though filled up with bits of chicken, mushrooms, fish maw, prawns and dried scallops, the soup was rather bland and could do with more time on the stove. Lacking the punch the Imperial Treasure's rendition offers.Jellyfish with Spicy Sauce - Nicely crunchy with a rather strong spicy kick. Great as an appetiser.Siew Mai with Phoenix Prawn - Featuring a crunchy, whole prawn atop a not overly fatty meat and prawn mixture, the siew mai was pretty nice without coming across as too oily.Prawn Dumpling - Crunchy prawns amidst a lightly elastic but a tad thick, translucent skin. Palatable.Beancurd Skin Roll with Seaweed - Visually, this somewhat reminded me of CP's seaweed chicken roll but tasted alot better in my humble opinion. A crisp layer of beancurd skin enveloping prawns and bounded by a ring of fresh tasting seaweed for that faint taste of the ocean. Dipping one in the accompanying worcester sauce imbued it with a nice sourish hint.Rice Roll with Prawn - Crunchy prawns missing a silky cheong fun skin. What a mismatch.Fish Noodles with Live Prawns - In retrospect, this was probably the best dish of the afternoon. Delightfully chewy fish noodles stir fried in black sauce for a mildly salty and sweet taste and served with fresh prawns of varying sizes.Custard Bun - Peach Garden's hallowed custard bun; the untouchable #1 on my custard bun list. Now rocking the bottom of the barrel with it's flat bun, sourish dough and awfully sweet filling. Where's the saltiness and the coarse texture of the egg yolk sediment? Probably one of the worst custard buns I've eaten to date. And I kid you not.Spare Rib with Spicy Sauce - The spare rib used to be one of Peach Garden's highlights and was what drew us here (we would specifically drop by PG from time to time to take away their spare ribs). But even after waiting for close to 25 mins for this dish (after all the dishes had been cleared), it turned out to be one of the worst disappointments, alongside the custard bun. The spare rib had way too much fat and came across as dry, salty and spicy (due to a blot of chilli oily atop) with a lingering ginger taste from the grated ginger in the meat. The only consolation was the stalk of broccoli by the side and the mildly sweet onion below. Apparently the restaurant was experimenting with a new recipe. Gosh.Pancake with Red Bean - After a slew of disappointments, the red bean paste pancake ended the meal off on a relatively good note; crisp on the surface, not too oily, topped with lots of sesame seeds and stuffed with not overly sweet red bean paste.Lunch was a rather disappointing affair and cost ~ $417 for the 6 of us (after a 10% credit card discount). Hardly cheap, especially for the quality of food and the ridiculously long wait time (for the pork rib). Attended my nephew's wedding dinner in this Chinese restaurant and was really impressed by its really nice Chinese dishes served during the dinner. Restaurant was spacious and cosy with high ceiling which make the restaurant looks really big. Especially enjoy their shark fin soup with crab meat and the peking duck with wrap. Shark fin's texture was really thick and fragrant, and the crab meats are very fresh and sweet. THe duck meat is fragrant and juicy, love the wrap skin which is very thin and smooth which goes well with the duck skin. THe service here is also friendly and polite. continue reading

Dim sum is one of my favourite foods to have for lunch because of the wide variety of dishes that you can try and enjoy. Peach garden is pretty competent in their dim sum offerings. Classics such as the char siew are done well, being caramalised and sticky and sweet. Fatty parts are used for juiciness and flavour although some pieces comprise completely of fat which is a turn off. Dim sum costs about 4-5 dollars per basket. The other dim sum that were also good included the siew mai and the har gao with big chunks of prawn inside that were fresh and succulent. continue reading

I would have never expected to get into a dim sum frenzy on a Sunday morning. Crystal Jade Palace at Takashimaya was a notoriously long queue, Intercontinental's chinese restaurant was running full and with one still home and another running about to check out the dining options, this was too much to deal with on a lazy Sunday morning. Oh where could we go now? And just before I wanted to abandon all dim sum plans, I get a text to say 'Peach Garden. Chulia Street. Got a table. Going down now. See you.'With a strained muscle, I was more than just glad to finally get to the front entrance of OCBC Centre. Except. Where do we go from there? I paced up and down and decided to walk to the left to see if there was a side entrance. Suffice to say, there was definitely no access from the garbage disposal. Of which by this time, my terrible dining companion texted to enquire if i was lost. Which he obviously knew because he had SEEN me pacing up and down. With friends like this, who needs enemies. So if you do go, save yourself the embarrassment, walk towards the society bar and behind that you'd see the carpark where you can access the lifts. Remember this.The chok was a CHOCK full of ingredients in a tiny bowl. Not complaining about the generosity of ingredients but hey, why not that bit more boiled rice?The three layered crispy pork was just because he got back from a land where pork was not sold freely in the markets. It lacked that crackling crisp I was hoping for when I took a piece. The XO carrot cake was their only version of carrot cake and well, it tasted charred. There was no taste of XO sauce. And I liked the crunchy beansprouts the most.Tragic.Why you no flow? It was too sweet and creamy. Now where's my salted egg yolk?BBQ pork buns had more skin that filling. The filling was a good savoury sweet though These dumplings would hit the spot with prawn lovers. A pretty prawn atop a dumpling that encased more prawns and topped with a thin layer of minced pork. And we made a dessert order just because we were asked in passing. Haha.Such obliging customers. And that's why macdonald's upsize totally works.Black glutinous rice, grass jelly cubes, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and ohmy. coconut milk.Decadence.This is just.A perfect way to end a Sunday morning dim sum continue reading

My entire family visited Peach Garden to celebrate my auntie's 80th birthday. We were greeted with friendly service staff and a very grand looking restaurant.The scenic view from the 33rd floor, where the restaurant is situated at, definitely started the dinner well. It was a breathtaking panoramic view of the skyline.The dishes we ordered were the Sauteed Stuffed Scallops with Salted Yolk, Double-boiled Fish Maw in Chicken Essence Soup, Roasted Crispy Duck, Deep-fried Prawns in Wasabi Sauce, Steamed Soon Hock Fish in Soy Sauce, Braised Handmade Beancurd in Crabmeat Sauce and Fried Seafood Noodles in X.O Sauce. I found every dish to be very tasty. The scallops, duck and deep-fried prawns were my favourites for the night. Felt that the Fish Maw Soup wasn't tasty enough, the fish could have been more tender, beancurd tasted too common to me and I couldn't taste much of the X.O flavor in the seafood noodles. continue reading
