Located next to MAD Jack Cafe is this newly opened Charcoal Thai at NEX, they moved here from Kovan last friday, 28th May 2015. You would think that since they upgraded to a more popular location that their business is doing well. Unfortunately, when I visited on Vesak day, I was told by a local staff that more than half their menu wasn't available, due to a supplier choosing not to deliver food supplies on Vesak Day. I was turned off by that and decided to come back and try again another time. Their menu had a wide variety of Thai food, and it was what enticed me to visit. I miss good old authentic thai food and it seemed like a good place to try.The shop was pretty big and stretches all the way. However the smells of the mookata was choking and suffocating as the shop didn't seem to have good ventilation. I often saw the staff coughing as they walked by the BBQ area. So after posting on facebook to ask the shop when their full menu would return, they replied me saying their full menu was now available. So 3 days later I went back to NEX to try again. This time a PRC staff, Hon Qin, told me that their thai chef wasn't around and I could only order items that could be cooked by a chinese chef. YAY! More stories and excuses I guess? The main thing I wanted was mango sticky rice and iced milk tea. They said those were available.1. Mango Sticky Rice $6.90It tasted good, and the mango was sweet. My favourite dish amongst all of them. 2. Thai boat noodles $1Save your $1 and don't order a bowl of tasteless noodles.3. Minced meat fried omeletteThis tasted more like oyster omelette, the chinese chef did a great job! The omelette was crispy on the outside and fluffy and thick on the interior. There was alot of minced meat too. 4. Sweet and sour chicken $9.90The sauce was sweet and so were the numerous pineapples. My father enjoyed this dish, and you could see the type of chicken meat used here. Probably from the same set of meat they use to prepare for the BBQ, but at least the chicken tasted good. 5. Pad Thai $9.90So initially, we ordered Pad Thai only to be told by the same Singapore staff that the substitute Chinese chef cannot cook it, so we decided to order something else. But 20 minutes later, this pad thai arrived on our table and it was served to us by the PRC staff, named Hon Qin and we asked him, why was it, that we were told we couldn't order it? Hon Qin, quickly repied that it was on the house. 6. Thai iced milk tea $3.90So we were told by Hon Qin that now our chendol order which we had placed 20 minutes ago, was no longer available. So we switched to a thai milk tea, but before it arrived, 2 cups of iced coffee arrived at our table and we had assumed it was our iced milk tea. We sipped it before realizing it was coffee. We called Hon Qin and it took awhile before he realized those iced coffees were meant for the table beside us.7. VeggiesThis was supposed to be vegetables with oyster sauce, but the Chinese didn't know how to cook it, so we got instead. It tasted okay until you got to the bottom layer of vegetables, there were super salty. All in all, a very strange thai food experience. I would like to thank Hon QIn for trying several times to fulfill our customer experience, despite all the hiccups, he tried to accommodate us and find us a solution. Unlike the Singaporean staff that kept going around and giving excuses to other tables. We overheard 3 different excuses for why the food wasn't available. continue reading

After my first Mookata experience, i grew to like it. But it's rather unhealthy so i try not to have it too often. Haha! But once in a while indulgence, i like ^_^From 8 Days, i got to know about Charcoal Thai. Since it's rather convenient and near so i came here yesterday for dinner. For $39.90 per set, we chose vegetable soup for our mookata. At first glance, the portion don't look big but end up we couldn't finish and still had some meat left. For those who had mookata before will know the BBQ part will get burned at a certain point. My experience at Spicy Thai Thai at Aljunied was my meat can get burned easily if i didn't take note during the BBQ part. But at Charcoal Thai my meat don't have much burnt parts so it's a plus point! The only bad point is the service cause kind of hard to get their attention. My 2nd glass of iced water took forever to come and until i paid my bills and left, still no sight of it. Ha! Place not very big and i took outdoor seats ( only 2 tables ) which i think it's better, more cooling ( but nice only if no smokers around ). continue reading

We had earlier purchased some vouchers for their Mookata (Thai style steamboat) set consisting of thinly sliced meat (chicken and pork), hotdogs, crabsticks, fish balls, vegetables and some prawns. We were quite disappointed with their service as it took almost 30 mins for our food to be served (reason being they needed time to heat up the charcoal?!) We had also earlier encountered some problem when making our reservation when they initially coerced to take up a late afternoon lunch slot (3pm) as they claimed that they were fully booked from 11am to 2pm. However, we insisted on coming at 12 noon and we were glad we did. Guess what, we were the 1st customers when we arrived at 11.50am!Foodwise, the portion was reasonable for 2 pax (we paid only $11.80 for 2 pax). The meats had little marinate (just some sesame seeds and seasoning) but tasted pretty good after grilling. The prawns were however, totally not fresh and flaccid to be exact. The rest of the ingredients were pretty standard though. The Tom Yam broth was quite light but still flavourfully, especially towards the end.Overall, it was only worth it with the promotion. Not a place we would patronise anytime soon. continue reading

Having had a pleasant dining experience at Charcoal Thai previously, I decided to patronize it again as I was craving thai food. Had their kangkong again, which was better this time round, and also ordered the squid - sauce was not too flavourful and squid was thinly sliced and portion was not a lot. Ah loy thai still has one of the best thai squid dish in Singapore. There wasn't much customers when I went and service was good. continue reading
