When I'm asked to recommend brunch places, there are two places that instinctively come to mind, namely Symmetry and, more recently, Hummerstons. It was because of Hummerstons that I was introduced to the concept of poutine. Originating from Quebec in Canada, a traditional dish of poutine is made by pouring warm meat gravy onto a mound of fries topped with cheese curds. Because it's impossible to get cheese curds in Singapore for some reason, Hummerstons states on their menu that quesillo oaxaca, a type of semi-soft white Mexican string cheese, is used as a substitute. Doesn't matter to me since I've never tasted the real thing. Count me in for anything au fromage. The fries used in Hummerstons' poutine have their skins on, just the type I prefer. Sadly, however, for some reason the dish is never served piping hot, like all fries ought to be. The gravy's hot and flavorful all right, but there's a conspicuous lack of it. They could definitely be more generous with the quesillo oaxaca as well. The Italian Job fared slightly worse than The Hangover - the beef and mushroom ragout taste like substandard bolognese sauce and just doesn't gel with the fries and gravy. The Hangover's saving grace is that the runny yolk of the poached egg increases the volume and viscosity of the gravy.I order the poutine repeatedly because the different groups of people I've visited Hummerstons with are just so excited by the idea of cheese, meat and fries. It does look like an infallible concept. Unfortunately I've never been impressed.Thankfully, Hummerstons does brunch really well.Their desserts used to be outstanding as well, but have since been replaced with an unimaginative selection of cakes - "Chocolate Fudge Cake, Red Velvet Cake, Carrot Cake". I wish they would bring their fun desserts back.Though the food at Hummerstons can hardly be regarded as uniformly excellent, they do have some very good brunch dishes. I love the ambiance and its location in a quiet corner of Robertson Walk as well. It's a perfect stop to do some filling up before spending a lazy afternoon lounging at one of the picturesque cafes in the area. I suppose that's why I've developed a fondness for the place, and why I keep returning in spite of the steep prices. For complete review and pictures, please visit: http://theyummyyak.wordpress.com/2013/08/21/hummerstons/ continue reading

It was packed to the brim on a Saturday night at Robertson Quay, and i was hungry. The friends and i found our way to Hummerstons in the end where there are a few empty tables. Heard the food is not bad but the waiter for rushing me to order dinner - we weren't pleased when they did not bother telling us that the kitchen is closing I had truffled mushroom soup which they are generous with the mushrooms. The truffle taste is not overpowering. However, the croutons are not good. The roasted pumpkin cake was a tad dry for me but my friends enjoyed it. continue reading

Yummy egg benedict for breakfast! From the photo of it, it really made one drool. The quality of the food is great! As usual, it consist of egg and bacon and the entire top is drenched with melted cheese. It is super flavourful and delicious. The sides are mainly asparagus and pan fried potato cubes. The potatoes are all well marinated and tasty. Asparagus provide us with a better balanced diet. Will definitely head back for more! continue reading

While Cedele's and Food for Thought's pancakes still reign in terms of fluffiness and moistness, Hummerstons' rendition of this familiar breakfast favorite is definitely one of the better ones around. Thin but sizeable, these light and airy pancakes ($14++) had a delectable buttermilk tang and were served with berry compote, real maple syrup and easy-to-slather whipped butter. They go cold quite quickly though, so do lap them up with haste.Oh, did I forget to mention that I adored the design of the spacious lounge area as much as I liked the pancakes? continue reading

We always enjoyed our visits to Hummerstons. Everything - from the friendly service, the chilling lay-back ambience, the pretty consistent food quality, to even the regular high table at the middle of the restuarant (which we love to be seated at) - always added up to a relaxing, comfortable meal with friends. We decided to drop by for dinner again tonight.I went for my all time favourite - the lovely Prawn Pavoratti.According to the menu's description, it's "Proscuitto wrapped egg battered prawns, farfalie, hot peppers, spinach, tomato & sherry cream". In my limited vocabulary, I could only say, it's a very delicious pasta!! Highlight of the dish was definitely the 4 large prawns wrapped with parma ham & egg - which provided just the right touch of saltiness & fragrance to the prawns naturally. Otter wanted to try something different, and was quickly drawn to the word "scallop" written on the large chalkboard for Menu of the Day. The Folley Scallop Tagliatelle turned out to be the right decision, as the pasta arrived in a flavourful mixture of bacon, mushroom, semi dried tomato, garlic in white wine butter sauce. The 3 medium size fat scallops were lightly grilled to a nice, juicy texture, and they really put Otter in a very happy mood.. Medium Rare Steak Frites was served next. It was a popular dish among us, and it seldom failed our expectations. However, Flexi-Bone lamented that today's ribeye was over-cooked. It looked and tasted more like a medium-cooked steak (I agreed). Unlike the usual time, today's steak was drier and did not oooooze out any juice when the cuts were made. The side compliments (tomatoes, onions, etc) strangely fell below the usual standard too, which's a shame... Toady loved the Mushroom Garlic Confit. But in the mood to be an omnivore tonight, she asked if it's possible to add some meat to this vegetarian dish. After some enquiries, we were informed that she needed to top up $5 for chicken, and $3 for a prawn!!!! (I suspected it's the same parma ham wrapped prawn, but still... ), amongst other options. The toad decided on chicken and was soon delighted by the dish placed in front of her. The (separately grilled?) chicken chunks and juicy mushrooms turned out to be quite a formidable combination. It's only towards the end of the meal that she found the pasta to be slightly oily (I guessed it's always easier to see the amount of residue oil left on the plate when the food was almost gone.. ) Still, it was a satisfying meal to her! A meal at Hummerstons doesn't come cheap, but I always left the restaurant happy, and looking forward to my next visit!! continue reading
