For the set meal ( $19.90 ), there is Mushroom Lettuce Wrap, Nasi Lemak and Kueh Balu Tiramisu.Mushroom Lettuce Wrap has a lot of minced ginger and garlic in the dish. Nasi Lemak ( Coconut rice ) + Omelette + Asian Coleslaw + 5 Spice Pork -> The rice is very nice, so is the pork. But spicy.Kueh Balu Tiramisu : Singapore’s favorite sponge nuggets ( Kueh Balu ) are soaked in house-pulled expresso laced with Valrhona Chocolate and gula melaka, layered with coconut whipped cream and marscapone.Noticed that it comes straight from the fridge. Little amount of Kueh Balu.Bak Chor Mee Pasta ( $19.90 )The Wok & Barrel’s signature 5-spice pork ( pork confit ) paired with silken tagliatelle that is tossed in a spicy piquant sauce reminiscent of local flavour, Bak Chor Mee.The pork is tender and well but too big chuck for Bak Chor Mee. If angel hair pasta is used, it will be a better comparison to Bak Chor Mee. The pasta used in this dish is a bit too thick. Maybe the chef is thinking in way of Mee Poh but it is still too thick.Puloh Hitam Cake with Gula Melaka Butterscotch and Coconut ice-cream ( $10.90 )The Wok & Barrel’s take on the Sticky Date Pudding made with Asian Black Glutinous Rice ( Puloh Hitam ) , drenched in a Gula Melaka ( Aromatic ) Palm Sugar butterscotch and served with homemade Coconut Ice-Cream.Cannot smell anything aromatic. The pudding is heated in microwave. The butterscotch is well made. Feel the pudding is abit too dry. continue reading

- The ShopThe restaurant serves Madam Tan's Nasi Lemak and bistro classics with bold Singaporean hawker flavours. She is consistently creating new local dishes with a modern twist and is inspire to keep the local hawker flavours going. There are beers, wines and signature desserts too. - The FoodNasi Lemak Crispy Chicken Sets @ $7.90To be honest, I was a little disappointed when the dish arrive. I don't fancy fried chunky chicken as they are tough in most places and I assumed this will be no different. BUT I was wrong! The crispness of the skin has a unique blend of spices and yet the meat is VERY tender. The coleslaw has a refreshing mix of crunchy shredded cabbage & carrots in a tangey Asian-inspired dressing of lime juice. If you are a chilli lover, the sambal belachan is addictive! It arouse my appetite even I just had 3 cakes & 1 tart for dessert at FLOR with Maureen of Miss Tiam Chiak! Shiok ah! Fear not if you can't take spicy, the sambal tumis is milder.Nasi Lemak Curry Chicken Sets @ $8.90The curry chicken is just as tender. But I felt the curry taste is not strong enough as I am a super CHILLI lover. However, I do think the taste is just right for most Singaporean The rice has a different texture from the common Nasi Lemark, unique flavour and the grains are beautifully separated. Surprisingly it's Jasmine long grain and not basmati. Madam Tan sure know how to cook.Homemade Chin Chow @ $2.50The chin chow is homemade with honey added. It's pretty good but too sweet for me.- My OpinionIf you're famished and love Nasi Lemak, you MUST come to this place! I can't wait to go back to try Madam Tan's new creation.Oh, did I mention that they don't charge GST & Svs Charge too? continue reading

I'm pretty sure the Wok & Barrel makes my favorite pizza in Singapore. I'm not saying it's the best pizza in Singapore, just my favorite. Why? Nowhere else have I ever tried anything like their beef rendang pizza, and I suspect I never will. I love Malay curry (see my review of Hjh Maimunah for my quest to try the best beef rendang in Singapore) and I love chewy pizza crust, so this pizza is definitely a 10/10 for me. The mutton curry pizza is also pretty good as is the Desiree pizza with ham and spinach. The pizzas are a pretty reasonable $12 each, but if you come during happy hour they're a steal at $5 if you buy a beer. And they have a pretty exotic selection of beers and ciders, including the Delerious Tremens and mango-flavored "Jungle Beer" (I liked this one, but my boyfriend hated it - definitely a girl's beer!) continue reading

Support Mod Sin food! Modern Singapore food cuisine, as coined by a recent Sunday Times article refers to how beloved Singapore dishes get a new modern twist, often with surprisingly tasty results! We made a trip to The Wok & Barrel, tucked in a corner in an up and coming enclave of great food eateries at Duxton HIll. The restaurant is housed in a restored shophouse, and I liked the small, cozy ambience inside. Seats are limited so it’s best to make reservations beforehand. The Mutton Curry Pizza ($13.90) was DA BOMB. Warm, tender mutton chunks served as a rendang style topping on a thin crusted pizza with not one, but three kinds of cheeses! I am actually surprised how the rich mutton curry went so well with the mozarella, cheddar and gouda cheese but it somehow worked. It was so delicious, we finished the entire pizza very quickly. HIghly recommended! Another highly recommended dish by the servers was Soft Shell Chili Crab ($17.90). Chili crab lovers who dislike getting their hands dirty from de-shelling the usual Singaporean chili crab dish have reason to rejoice- this dish is served with fried soft shell crab- another favourite with Singaporeans. It is topped with a sweet tangy Singaporean chili crab sauce which is essentially tomato based. A very interesting take on the perennial chili crab dish!I am a big fan of puloh hitam, so when I saw a picture of Wok&Barrel’s Puloh Hitam Cake with Gula Melaka Butterscotch and Coconut Ice Cream ($8.90) on twitter, I knew I had make a trip down to try it! Although what was served looked rather different from the photo I had seen on twitter, the dessert nonetheless didn’t disappoint. The homemade coconut ice cream is absolutely delightful when paired with the puloh hitam cake soaked with rich, aromatic gula melaka. Calories be damned.
