I was craving for dim sum, so recently keep having dim sum for lunch. We went around 2.10pm, then the auntie standing outside told us that if we want dim sum, will only start from 2.30pm. So we waited outside, the auntie was nice and let us in around 2.20pm, but the waitress said this promotion start at 2.30pm, so we must still need to wait till 2.30pm to order it I had ha kau 2piece X2 for $4.25. Their ha kau was normal, skin was dry, so it get torn easily. Siew mai 2 piece for $1.95 which tasted just so so. Their liu sa bun usually I go other places eat was plain colour but this was in orange colour, the egg yolk taste was not strong enough.I like their gui hua cake, a plate cost $1.70 which is considered cheap, not very sweet, but quite QQ. But I find that their mayo sauce was quite weird, total damage cost $27.40. Also, we asked for plain water, we didn't know that normal ice water they will charge 30 cents per cup, staff should inform that water need to pay, because I'd rather pay 50 cents for a cup of tea instead of 30 cents for plain water. continue reading

Mango Pudding (~$4):thank goodness they served the condensed milk separately with the mango pudding because they did not exactly complement each other well. My partner thought so too. The mango pudding was served cold with small chunks of mango in it. It tasted refreshing however not addictive and fab enough for us to finish a whole bowl by ourselves. We also ordered a bowl of fish soup (~$10) which I felt was really nice. The soup had a really nice fragrance which smelled a little like fish maw. The fish (only 5 slices) was very fresh. The lack of ingredients (fish) was compensated by several fatty pork slices which we did not touch in the end as the meat was too tough. continue reading

I love wasabi!Dining alone and I wanted to have a decent meal. This is the place I will go for usually. I like their authentic Cantonese dishes and prices are reasonable.I used to have steam fish but I wanted to have a change this round. I ordered wasabi fried prawns with plain rice. It was piping hot when served, I couldn’t wait to try it. Wasabi was well blended with the thin crust on the prawn. Taste wise, it wasn’t overpower and it was just nice to taste bud. Prawn was crunchy and big enough for one mouthful. Overall it was a satisfying dish.Service was usual, prompt and polite. continue reading

Had a disappointing dining experience here.Stir-fried vegetablesThis is very much just garlic stir-fried with vegetables. Acceptable but not nice.Sour and Spicy soupThe smell of the vinegar was very strong, and another diner seated 3 chairs away commented that she could smell the sourness from where she was. I could only taste vinegar in this, not sure if I was supposed to taste anything else.Seafood Hor FunThis may look nice on the surface, but the dining experience goes downhill from here. The horfun was in a mushy chunk underneath the sauce. I feel that the chef didn't even bother to give the noodles some taste by stir-frying it, or even mixing it with the sauce. The minimum that could have been done was at least to separate out the noodles so that it wouldn't coagulate together. Only the top layer of noodles had some sauce on it. Beneath it was white, bland, and tasteless, separated from the sauce. Trying to mix up the noodles to bring the sauce to the bottom was a chore, because the sauce was thick, heavy and very starchy. The entire thing was bland and terrible. The only thing worthy of some praise was the 3 small pieces of prawns that were fresh and chewy.Fried DumplingI ordered a normal portion of fried dumplings, I got 6 pieces of fried dumpling skin. 'nuff said.I'm usually easy-going in the sense that even if the food is not nice, I'll still just take it as one meal settled, and try to finish my food. I seldom refuse my food! I forced myself to drink up the vinegar soup but really couldn't swallow the seafood horfun because I really don't fancy chewing on a chunk of mushy flour that still tasted dry and terrible even after trying to mix up the sauce more evenly.I feel coffeeshops are capable of serving the same food at a much better standard, at only a small fraction of the price. Granted, Crystal Jade is a more luxurious restaurant, but it's not worth paying an exorbitant amount for food that I couldn't even swallow. I'd probably not return to Crystal Jade Kitchen, but I remain a fan of their other concepts like Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao and Crystal Jade Steamboat. continue reading

Crystal Jade offers an economic set meal called "Double deal". There are quite a few combinations for diners to choose. The Double deal we had is the one with duck stew and shark's fin that costs $32.80. For each set you ordered, you get to choose one dish from the list for only $1. What a deal! For that additional dish, we chose the salted egg yolk prawn. Very delicious! The big prawns are slightly deep-fried to crisp, and sauteed with golden egg yolk sauce to give such savoury flavour! Love it. The shark's fin is pretty ordinary, not much fins in it anyway. But I like how it's served with bean sprouts to give an extra texture to the broth. The duck stew is my favourite. It's cooked with lots of yam at the bottom, some ginger slices, homemade sauce as well as some rice wine. The yam is so well-cooked that it absorbed all the good flavour of the duck and gravy. Very nice to go with rice. Mango pudding ($4) is normal, cold and sweet, but nothing too 'wow' about. Aloe Vera and honey ($3.80) is also not a bad try, refreshing, and it's supposed to be good for skin complexion. continue reading
