In the conception of this new Indian restaurant at East Coast Road, it is evident how the owners wanted it to be a family place. As soon as you step inside Zaffron Kitchen, it will feel like home. Dim yellow lights give a warm glow to the interiors designed like a living room and kitchen. Taking centre stage in the restaurant is a long high table where guests can perch themselves for a quick snack and drink. This 96-seater restaurant also has more tables and chairs for those who want to take their time to enjoy their meal.
Start your meal with the Papadum ($4), which comes in pepper and plain flavours. The pepper was the spiciest of them all. It’s a good thing there’s the mango chutney to balance out its flavour. As for the plain papadum, it is the usual one you would order at any restaurants so it’s nothing special.
Next course was the Papdi Chaat ($6) which is a popular street food in North India. The base is like a tart, but crispy. It is topped with a lot of ingredients such as peas, potato, and drizzled with sweet yogurt sauce. Last of the starters is the Sambar Idli ($4.50) which is quite heavy in the tummy, but otherwise, yummy.
As or the mains, you can opt for the Zaffron Tandoori Platter ($38) which consists of the Chicken Tikka, Fish Tikka, Malai Tikka, Murg Pudina, and Seekh Mutton Kebab. This dish is perfect for sharing as it has fish, chicken, lamb, and mutton prepared in different ways.
As for their signatures, Zaffron Kitchen is known for its Dum Chicken Briyani ($11). It’s served like a pie which you cut open to reveal the fragrant rice with chicken thigh. For its price, it’s very reasonable as the serving portion is huge. It can feed 3 people!
Other dishes worth trying are the Khatti Meethi Gobi ($8.50) and the Kadhai Jhinga ($15). Both have very rich sauces which are a bit spicy, they give a bit of a kick to their taste.
To cool it off, have some of their Moong Dal Halwa ($9) dessert. This traditional Indian dessert is given a modern twist by pairing it up with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Try if for yourself and let us know what you think of it!
