Eat Your Bugs, They're Good For You
2013-05-16
There's a common saying: "to take something with a pinch of salt". Well according to the U.N., that ‘something’ could very well be any one of the bugs we see crawling across our paths daily. Munching on bugs might not be as alien as you may think. A staple tidbit for some 2 billion people worldwide, some bugs are even considered a delicacy in other parts of the world. Push-carts hawking trays of deep-fried insects and 'bug kebabs' are a common sight in the night markets of Bangkok, Thailand.
And wouldn't you know it, these less than appealing snacks are actually chock-full of nutrients. A report released by the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organisation attested to the nutritional value of a buggy meal. Each crunchy bite of insect contains high levels of protein, vitamins, fiber, fat and mineral content beneficial to our body. Despite the endorsement, the U.N. was quick with a disclaimer that the report was in no way meant to inspire purposeful bug hunting with skewers. Given the pressure on conventional food sources to support the growing world population, bugs could just be an alternative dinner menu – one with over 10 million different dishes to choose from. That being said, would you look at the next insect that comes within range any differently? ... Grasshopper, anyone?
