“Flavours of Life” Mooncakes by Marina Mandarin
2012-09-04
Now that the Mid-Autumn Festival is fast approaching, it’s now time to stock up your refrigerator with mooncakes! This year, Marina Mandarin offers us something different with Dim Sum Chef Kerene Keng’s creations that celebrate the flavours of life. Isn’t that interesting? Collectively known as Mini Heavenly Treasures (迷你酸甜苦辣), these mooncakes represent the various life experiences we go through. “I want to create a dessert that encapsulates the emotions we go through in life, and translate it into pastry that is quintessentially Chinese-oriented,” explains Chef Kerene. These flavours are sour, sweet, bitter, and spicy.
Sour, Sweet, Bitter, and Spicy are the flavours which make up the Mini Heavenly Treasures Mooncakes
Mini Semi Dried Hibiscus with White Lotus Paste Snowskin Mooncake (Sour) 酸 - 迷你洛神花白莲蓉 (粉红色) With the infusion of the hibiscus flower, this mooncake has a distinct tangy taste which may be a good surprise for you. Aside from that, this is also rich in anti-oxidants and Vitamin C which help boost the immune system. Talk about mooncakes which are yummy and healthy! Mini Osmanthus with White Lotus Paste Snow Skin Mooncake (Sweet) 甜 - 迷你桂花白莲蓉 (黄色) Representing the simple joys of life, this mooncake is made from osmanthus flower. This ingredient is partly responsible for this dessert’s sweet smelling scent and flavor, not to mention health benefits. If you may know, the osmanthus flower cleanses, detoxifies the body and promotes a balanced state of mind. Mini Bitter Gourd & Cashew Nuts with White Lotus Paste Snowskin Mooncake (Bitter) 苦 - 迷你凉瓜腰果白莲蓉 (绿色) This is the flavour which inspired Chef Kerene to come up with the unique mooncake flavours. She wanted to conceive something which made bitter gourd more acceptable to the palate. After experimenting for three months, she finally discovered that it is best mixed with cashew nuts! Try it and see for yourself how these 2 ingredients go well together. Mini Spicy Chocolate with White Lotus Paste Snow Skin Mooncake (Spicy) 辣 - 迷你辣巧克力白莲蓉 (棕色) Representing the high points in life, this is mooncake rounds up Peach Blossom’s Mini Heavenly Treasures Snowskin Mooncake. It packs a punch with its spicy chocolate in the centre. One bite and you feel a burst of flavour amid the chocolatey sweetness! These mooncake creations can be bought in a luxurious gold lacquer box made fancier with floating crystals encased in a glass cover. These “floating diamonds” are there to bring the receiver goodluck and prosperity. One premium box retails for $88.80+.
