Geylang Serai: One-Stop Place for All Your Hari Raya Puasa Needs
2013-07-30
During the Ramadhan period, Geylang Serai transforms into a buzzing community where you can find bazaars selling everything you need to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa to the fullest. From household decorations, clothes, to delicious Malay food – they can all be found at this one-stop place. Even if you’re not Muslim, the bazaars which are located within Tanjong Katong and Geylang are still worth checking out… especially the delectable offerings which will only be there for a limited time only! Wonder what you can find there? Read on for more! House Decorations
Once the fasting period is over, Muslim families also visit their relatives’ houses. And to make their homes look prettier, most of them buy new items to decorate their houses. They love their carpets too so at the bazaars, you can find a number of stalls which sell them in every size and design. The cheapest can cost less than $50 while the biggest ones (which can cover your living room floor) sell for more than a thousand bucks. Curtains are also must-haves, and at this place, you can see different versions to fit every window possible. Lights – what is a celebration without these? During Ramadhan, they also decorate their windows with bright and colourful lights. A few weeks before they celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, they turn these on to usher in a more festive mood until the fasting period is over. New Clothes and Henna Tattoos
In celebrating Hari Raya Puasa, our Muslims friends also get all dolled up. And for them to do this, they also buy new Bajung Kuru (traditional wear). They usually wear these when they go for house visits. Most of them buy more than one pair because they visit a lot of houses after Ramadhan. At the Geylang Bazaar, there are a number of stalls which sell Bajung Kuru for men and women. Scarves which women use to cover their head are also sold here in every colour and size. If you’re looking for shoes, look no further because you can find them here at very affordable prices as well. Henna stalls can be found here, too. Traditionally, women decorate their hands with intricate patterns to further doll themselves up once Ramadhan is over. The ink usually lasts a week so it’s best to get a henna tattoo a few days before Hari Raya Puasa. Delectable Ramadhan Treats
The highlight of the Geylang Bazaar – or any other bazaars – is usually the food. The stalls selling Malay goodies seem to take up most of the space there. They sell the usual favourites which include Dendeng, Vadai, Kebab, and Ayam Percik. For more information on these food items, click here! For the month of Ramadhan, there are also a lot of Muslims who break their fast here. It’s not surprising for there are also many stalls which sell heartier items which include the Briyani and Ramly burger, and many more. These delectable offerings are not just for those celebrating Ramadhan for non-Muslims are more than welcome to visit this bustling place to enjoy what the Geylang Serai has to offer.
