40 Hands is not the place to have a quiet afternoon with friends or to indulge in a good read. It is, however, a great place to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and hearty breakfast while watching the bustle of coffee machines and people who come and go. If you come on a weekend, try their Big Boy's Breakfast, which is their rendition of the English Breakfast. If you want something less, go for their poached eggs or the sandwich. These will go perfectly well with any of their coffees which are made using coffee beans from Five Senses. The lattes and mochas are smooth with a strong nutty and slightly acidic taste. If you want a caffeine kick, try their macchiato!
2. Selfish Gene Cafe

Located at Craig Street in the Tanjong Pagar area, Selfish Gene Cafe may not be the most popular cafe in town, but it's quickly getting there. Serving breakfast everyday (until 3pm on weekdays and 4pm on weekends), their breakfast options are definitely one to try. Something a little more unusual would be their Valerie 2, which consists of toasted brioche with homemade berry compote, cream cheese, salad and scrambled eggs to satisfy both your sweet and savory tooth. With reasonably priced food and drinks, Selfish Gene is a great place to check out.
3. Five and Dime

Five and Dime has a really nice setup - not edgy or hipster, but laid-back and classy. We think it’s perfect for slow breakfasts or romantic coffee dates. While breakfast fare here is worth mentioning, what comes highly recommended is the mentaiko pasta- al dente pasta cooked in a creamy fish roe base. It might sound overly creamy and heavy, but is actually rather enjoyable. Pair your meal with their mocha - sweet and chocolatey with a shot of caffeine.
4. The Humble Loaf

The Humble Loaf is a new bakery/cafe at Katong Shopping Centre which pride themselves on homemade breads, pastries, and other goodies which don’t use preservatives and bread improver. Aside from that, their bread recipes don’t use unbleached flours, rye, and whole wheat – these make the offerings here such healthy options.
Breads aren’t the only items you can find here. They also have to-die-for Not-so-humble Eggs; eggs topped with pepper, olives crumbles, celery and thin slices of ham dressed in olive oil. With these hearty items paired with a selection of well brewed coffees and baked bread, The Humble Loaf is a winner.
5. 7 KICKstart BREWiches

With a unique name, this cafe offers fun and easy-to-eat sandwiches and other food items to accompany your coffee. Enjoy an afternoon lunch of burgers as you chill in this eccentric café. Some of their bestsellers include the Firecracker Burger and the Delish Burger, both of which come with a knife stuck through the burger to keep it in place. The quirkiness of the cafe extends to the drinks as well with offerings like Blue Forestcino- a velvety and luxurious combination of black forest and coffee- and other seasonal drinks that delight.
These cafes are just the tip of the iceberg; more and more hidden gems are sprouting all over our sunny island. While we continue exploring and finding the best coffee/food places, we hope that this article will be useful to you in your hunt for the best cafe in town.
