Hidden Gem: Mrs. Low Siew Nghee
2010-06-15
A wispy scent of sautéed onion, garlic and minced pork warmly greeted me when I made my entrance to Mrs Low Siew Nghee’s oriental-peranakan furnished abode. The dining hall was quaintly adorned with interesting antiques, keepsakes and old pictures but my fickle attention was drawn to the trays of freshly baked Bun Su Si resting on the dining table. I was instantly enticed to grab a bun even before introducing myself formally to Mrs Low. Thank goodness I was distracted by her broad friendly smile. Finally, I got to meet this inspirational woman who is a role model to many who have crossed her path over the years.
Mrs.Low Siew Nghee
The former Vice-Principal of Catholic Junior College is a woman with a big, generous heart and lots of love for everyone. Curious how she shows her love? “Cooking is my expression of love,” says Mrs Low, with a broad smile on her face. Thus, Mrs. Low’s self published cookbook, Six Kitchens One Passion encapsulates her great “love affair” with cooking! Ah it’s more than just a collection of old time favorite recipes. It’s an expression of a woman’s passion and journey in life in the pleasant company of family and friends. It is Mrs Low’s memorabilia of happy childhood days long ago, a nostalgic reflection of fond memories of people who have touched her life, and her personal experiences and encounter with food throughout her life. Aren’t you glad to be part of this food affair? Thank goodness Mrs. Low is a woman with a big heart. Not only is Mrs Low passionate about food and preparation, she is always generous about sharing her ideas, cooking and recipes. She confesses that she finds great personal joy in sharing her culinary skills with her family, friends, colleagues and students. “I’d rather share my recipes and food tips with people close to me, than keeping them safe in a secret place,” she muses. “I am a believer that food threads people together. The more you share, the more it comes back to you,” she adds philosophically. Indeed. She is also a woman who keeps her words. For the next 6 months, be ready for a series of treats as OpenRice Singapore highlights recipes from Mrs. Low’s Kitchen every month. Follow us as we slowly unfold her unique life story as a daughter, wife, mother and educator with every dish. We hope you are ready for some Red Rice Wine Paste Chicken, Pig Trotters with Black Vinegar and Preserved Salted Duck Soup this week.
