Cold brew coffee – This centuries-old brewing method has been rather raved about amongst local cafes and around the world. Not to be confused with iced coffee, it involves steeping coffee grounds overnight in water. You won’t need any heat here, just patience and time.
Why we love it:
1. Possibly the easiest coffee brewing method out there (no, adding hot water to 3-in-1 coffee isn’t counted)
2. No blandness of diluted coffee encountered after your mountain of ice has melted away
3. Less acidic taste and caffeine – hot water extracts out the bitter and acidic compounds, so without that, what you get is a smoother and sweeter brew
4. Can be kept in a jar in the fridge for about a week – more efficiency in the mornings!
Once we found out how easy it is to make cold brew coffee, we couldn’t resist trying it out.
Tip: Skip the bothersome step of sieving and straining your coffee base by using a French press instead.
Ingredients:
1 cup coffee (coarsely ground)
3 cups water
3 tablespoons brown sugar
Ice
Milk (optional)
Method:
1. Mix coffee grounds, water and brown sugar in the French Press. Refrigerate overnight or for at least 12 hours. Do not lower the plunger.
2. Take it out the next morning, press the plunge down and serve.
3. Fill your glass halfway with ice cubes, and then pour in coffee until the glass is about half or ¾ full.
4. Add as much or as little milk as you like. Watch the hypnotizing swirl as it blends in with the coffee.
5. Slurp up!
This recipe makes 2 cups of coffee. To make a bigger batch, increase the amounts of coffee and water using a 1:3 ratio.
