Sophisticated & Casual Japanese Dining Without a Hefty Price Tag
2014-02-21
Step into Watami and you’re greeted with a sleek modern Japanese interior of soothing dark wooden furniture and dim lights, which creates a relaxing atmosphere that’s perfect for group gatherings or dates. You get the sophistication of a restaurant, with the added bonus of reasonable prices and friendly service. Here’s one problem you face at Watami (and it’s a GOOD problem): The wide variety of food! From sushi to ramen to hot pots, almost every Japanese food craving can be satisfied in one location. While you're spoilt for choice, at least it saves you the debate of where to eat. Our lucky OpenRicers got to feast on some of their signature dishes, as well as popular menu items! Let’s check out what they had the privilege of tasting (prepare for the drooling to start).
Clockwise from top left:
WATAMI Salad, Hiroshima Kaki & Lemon Nabe, Sashimi Moriawase 6 Pin, Salmon & Avocado Sushi.
First up - a fresh WATAMI Salad that’s as appealing to Instagram as it is to our palates. The vibrant colours of the fresh vegetables, plump succulent prawns and savoury teriyaki chicken were beautifully displayed in a bowl. But it was the scoop of homemade tuna mayo that elevated this simple salad to an ohmygoodness delish level! We were also served a platter of Salmon & Avocado Sushi. You would think that the richness of the fish and creamy avocado would be overwhelming but they complimented each other nicely to create a lush flavourful experience with every bite. The Hiroshima Kaki & Lemon Nabe is a unique take on the typical nabe (hot pot) as they included juicy oysters flown in from Hiroshima, Japan. The oysters lent a briny tang to the soup, making it savoury yet refreshing. The Sashimi Moriawase 6 Pin is a gorgeous pinnacle of fresh sashimi artistically arranged to WOW customers. We want to say it was too pretty to eat but the tempting sashimi did not last long before it was thoroughly devoured.
Left: WATAMI Ramen, Right: Wafu Pizza.
The Wafu Pizza looks simple but it had such a light, sweet and delightful flavour that it was an instant hit (especially with the ladies). The WATAMI ramen is another signature item with a thick and intensely rich pork broth and ramen noodles that’s cooked to the right done-ness.
Clockwise from top: Teppan Sirloin Steak, Chocolate Parfait, Shiratama Cream Anmitsu.
The last dish, the Teppan Sirloin Steak, was simply a feast for all senses. You get to cook the strips of steak on the round hot stone to your preferred done-ness and sprinkle some salt and wasabi over the meat for that oomph factor. No meal is completed without some desserts! The Chocolate Parfait and Shiratama Cream Anmitsu were enjoyable treats that were not too sweet and had east-meets-west elements that make for an interesting conversational piece.
It was a night of sumptuous Japanese fare and everyone left the food tasting session feeling immensely satisfied. Do visit Watami for mouth-watering Japanese cuisine in a chillax environment.
