The Chop House: New Meat on the Block
2013-12-20
Gastro bars are like theme parks for hungry beer lovers. At The Chop House, “rides and attractions” include a parade of meat offerings and tables with state-of-the-art SelfTap beers – a concept originally from USA and a first in Singapore too. Compared to its sibling, Wooloomooloo Steakhouse, VivoCity’s newest gastro bar brings you more affordable steaks without discounting on their sizeable portions, a wide range of beers on tap as well as several bottled craft brews.

As you step in, look up! Not to mind your head for any low ceilings or a falling bucket prank but a fancy light bulb arrangement – which marks the start to other creative splashes in the restaurant.

Light Bites Sporting perfectly grilled tortilla shells, the Quesadillas are a must-have, whether as an appetizer or even a main for those with a smaller appetite. Choices include minced chicken or beef, which is slathered with hot melted Jack cheddar and you can choose to top it up with accompanying dips of sour cream, homemade salsa or guacamole. Meats Galore

Buttered in hoisin and black bean chilli sauce, the Berkshire Pork Chop comes in a rather hunky portion.

In the Mixed Grill Platter: Beef tenderloin, lamb cutlets, grilled tomatoes, as well as lamb and pork sausages.

Our pick: The Chop House Burger

With 5 burgers to choose from, we’d recommend the Chop House Burger, hands down. A thick minced pork patty is flavoured with hints of ginger, chilli and coriander and layered with applewood smoked bacon, as well as some crunchy pickles. All burgers come with a side of piping hot tater tots in a caged metal holder – Pop one in your mouth and you’ll soon discover what addictive little things they are. Then of course, what’s The Chop House without a sizzling grill section? Fair warning: The portions come huge so share it with someone else if you’d like. Hunky and chunky, the Berkshire Pork Chop comes full of flavour as it is buttered with a Mongolian glaze of hoisin and black bean chilli sauce. Perfect for people who prefer an array of different meats, the Mixed Grill Platter is a divine composition of beef tenderloin, milk-fed lamb cutlets, as well as grilled tomatoes, lamb and pork sausages. Here’s a tip: Scrape the idea of ketchup and chilli sauce. What you should really pair your meats with is their complimentary home-made condiments – Beetroot Chutney, Chilli Mustard and our ultimate favourite of the lot – Onion Jam. The savoury sweetness of the caramelized jam complements any meat speciality on the menu. You won’t regret trying it. Seafood lovers? No one’s forgetting you. In fact, the Mixed Seafood Platter for two is bound to catch your fancy. The hearty portion comprises of a grilled salmon, luscious prawns and calamari stuffed with herbs and breadcrumbs. Other options include the Grilled Norwegian Salmon and a good ol’ Fish and Chips. Beers on Tap

The Chop House is the first in the region to introduce the enticing SelfTap stations - A must-try experience for beer lovers.

One of the raging highlights of The Chop House has to be their SelfTap stations. You’ll find five of these red-tap beauties in and around the gastro bar where you will be able to pull your own pints whenever you please. And since you’re charged by the millilitres, you can even jazz up that boring glass of sprite with any of the two drafts available – Mac’s Great White Cloudy Wheat Beer from New Zealand and Pure Blonde Premium Lager from Australia. How it works

A twist to the classic, Butcher's Bleeding Mary features a piece of smoked bacon with the celery stick.

Step 1: Purchase a stored value card from the cashier at $5 and top it up with a value of your choice. Step 2: Tap the card against the SelfTap reader before pulling your pint and the appropriate value will be deducted from your card. Step 3: Top up the card at the cashier when the value is low. (Cards are transferrable.) Aside from all that exciting beer action, the gastro bar serves up a line of 15 intriguing cocktails like Butcher’s Bleeding Mary, Thoo Japanese Yen and Millions of Peaches. And instead of referring to the text-only menu, raise that head and look for their chalk-drawing depictions for a clearer idea. If you’re planning to make a trip down this weekend, it is recommended that you call to make reservations to avoid any disappointments. Despite having a total of 160 seats, it gets rather packed especially on weekends and Friday evenings. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Bon appetit! OpenRicer thumbsforfood had a go at The Chop House and tried a couple of their specialties. Here's what our member has to say:
"The USDA Prime Rib Eye ($36) was served with fried onion streaks, salad and some gravy to go with the steak. The steak was really delicious and done very well. The meat was juicy, flavorful and tender. When placed into the mouth, the meat was full-flavored and coats the palate perfectly." - thumbsforfood (OpenRicer)
