The Return of the Thai Buffet at Swissotel Merchant Court
2011-06-14
Guess what’s back at Swissotel Merchant Court’s Ellenborough Market Café? Thai Buffet! For a limited period only, guests can indulge themselves in a wide array of signature dishes from none other than the Land of Smiles. OpenRice was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of this Thai food dinner on 10 June, and the first thing we noticed when we got there was the wide array of culinary delights laid on the table. Guest chefs from Swissotel Nai Lert Park, Bangkok prepared more than 40 types of signature dishes and 10 desserts only fitting for a royal dinner. Being a Thai food buffet, of course you would just have to get the full Thai Dining Experience. And so, the first thing we tried out were the appetisers and salads such as the Mee Krob Kathong (Crispy and sweet Vermicelli with Shrimps), Tod Man Pla ( Deep Fried Fish Cake), Yam Nuea Nam Tok (Grilled Salad with Ground Chili, Roasted Rice, Mint Leaves and Lemon Juice), and Gaeng Jed Taw Hoo Moo Sub (Clear Soup with Soft Tofu and Minced Pork Dumplings). Personally, the dish that stood out for me was the Yam Nuea Nam Tok for it was a dish that was just bursting with so many different flavours from the spice, mint and citrus ingredients.
After spending a couple of minutes at this Thai food section, we then headed to the main courses. Everything just looked so tempting that it took us a few rounds to finally decide what we’re going to put in our limited stomachs. I had the Goong Thod Nam Makham (Friend Prawns with Tamarind Sauce), the Pla Thod Sam Rod (Deep-Fried Snapper with Spicy Sweet Sauce), and the Phad Puk Ruam Mit (Wok-Fried Mixed Vegetables). There were still so a lot of dishes to try, but after our time at the appetizers and main courses, there just wasn’t enough to squeeze in other dishes in our tummies. And so, it was now time for desserts. Aside from the Thai food delicacies such as the Bua Loy Puek (Sweet Tapioca with Taro in Coconut Milk) and Tub Tim Krob (Water Chestnut Red Rubies in Syrup and Crushed Ice), there were a couple more of Swissotel’s beloved desserts. Of course, as a dessert lover, I tried the chocolate fondue, chocolate cake, and the mango cake. Over all, it was a very hearty meal at Ellenborough Market Cafe that was just yummy to our tummies.
