What's with the Name, Confused Cooks?
2011-02-07
Why Confused Cooks? That was the first question that entered my mind as I stepped inside the small yet homey restaurant situated in the heart of Arab Street. Head Chef and part owner Leo Xue simply told me that at their restaurant, “anything goes.” With a big question mark on my mind, I finally understood what he meant by this when I browsed their menu. I noticed that unlike most food establishments, they don’t really have a theme when it comes to their menu. Not that it’s a bad thing. In fact, I kind of loved the idea because it only meant more choices for the diners! Upon the owner’s recommendation, I had the Scallop and Quail Eggs, Cheeky Chili Chicky Pasta, and the Dory and Chips. For an average of $10 to $15 per dish, I must say that their servings were gigantic. But could the taste of these dishes be as impressive as their size? I uncovered the answer one by one, starting from the appetizer.
Scallop and Quail eggs, $12
The Scallop and Quail Eggs salad consisted of seared curried scallops, sunny side-up eggs, tomato chutney, peamint, fresh lettuce leaves, and cauliflower puree. The salad had no dressing, so I could really taste the freshness of the leaves as well as the sliced tomatoes. The quail eggs were just fine, nothing stellar about it. Its taste was just enhanced by sidings. But I must say that it’s still a must-try dish for the reason that this is the one of the freshest salads that I’ve tasted.
Chicky Chili Pasta, $11.50
As for the Chicky Chili Pasta, it wasn’t visually appetizing as the sauce was very dark. But the chef said that it’s one of their most popular dishes and so I tried it. But before that, I requested that it wouldn’t be too hot for I have a low tolerance for spicy dishes. And the result was a dish that just tickled my palate with its mild spiciness.
Dory and Chips, $18
With an almost full tummy, I braised myself for the last dish on the menu…Dory and Chips. The fish was really soft inside and crispy outside, just the way I wanted my fish cooked. As for the chips, they were more like gigantic fries because they were just too thick. But still, they managed to make it crispy and tasty.
Tofu Tiramisu
I thought that my dining experience at Confused Cooks was over, but the chef surprised me with a very unique dessert which was the Tofu Tiramisu. It tasted just like your ordinary tiramisu which is soft and chocolatey. I only have one word to describe it: YUMMY! I guess I could also say that to the rest of the dishes I’ve tasted at Confused Cooks. -- Address: 25 Arab Street Tel.
