You Think These 5 Food Items Are Healthy? No, They're Not!
2013-01-15
Who doesn’t want to live a healthy life? And while we’re still in the early part of the New Year, it may be a good time to change your eating habits. You can start by stocking your fridge with “healthy foods”. However, be careful for there are a lot of items in the market which you may think are healthy, but are really not. To start you off, we list five of them: Granola Bars
Granola bars have gained reputation as a healthy breakfast item because they are rich in oats, nuts, and even dried fruits. But those ingredients aside, one packet of this energy food is actually loaded with sugary syrups, fats, and artificial ingredients which don’t really differentiate it from high-calorie bars. Instead of buying these expensive granola bars, why not just stick to plain old oatmeal? Make it more interesting and prepare it from scratch. And for that added taste, mix it up with fresh fruits! Tea Drinks
Tea drinks are a popular choice to quench your thirst. These are known for their anti-oxidant properties as well as phyto nutrients. Well, these are actually true if what you are drinking are the natural brewed tea leaves. Most of those teas sold packs or bottles are just loaded with sugars, just like sodas. Instead of buying these, you can opt to buy the leaves and brew it yourself. It’s way cheaper and healthier. © Miszmasz | Stock Free Images & Dreamstime Stock Photos
Sports Drinks
When you get thirsty after a strenuous activity, you immediately grab a sports drink to revive your tired body. After all, the ads say that it’s full of electrolytes such as potassium and sodium for that boost of energy. But the truth is, most sports drink have higher calories. Most of these drinks even have higher sugar content and have little or no nutritional value at all. Instead of drinking these, which won’t really do you any good, just stick to plain water instead. Some Salads
Just because there are green leafy vegetables in it, that doesn’t make it healthy right away. Even if it has fresh tuna, chicken, or shrimp added to it, it still becomes unhealthy due to the high calorie content from its mayonnaise dressing. So, if you’re craving for salads, choose those with vinaigrette or low-fat mayonnaise dressings. © Xeniaii | Stock Free Images & Dreamstime Stock Photos
Multi Grain Bread
When you say multi-grain, it means that the bread is made up of different grains. But that doesn’t automatically mean that the food item is made of healthy whole grains, which is the ingredient you should be looking for. If you check the food label, many breads contain refined grains. This type doesn’t really give you the nutritional benefits you will get from whole grain breads. So in buying breads, choose the one which contains this. © Hhltdave5 | Stock Free Images & Dreamstime Stock Photos See Also: Where else can you find the best places to eat healthily?
