This was my first visit to the Red house, during the dinner hour along with other Open Ricer for a complimentary food tasting session. Located along the Singapore riverside of Robertson Quay, I must admit I'm pretty impressed by it's classy decoration.

Unlike many of the other seafood establishments, I was surprised that Red house actually offers Dim Sum in the menu all day.

Had a quick glance at the menu and I was very excited as there is long list of food lining up.

We had 3 different Dim Sum on today's menu as starters:

1) Steamed Chili Crab Pau - $8.00 (Basket of 3)
2) Steamed Prob Ribs with Yam - $4.00 (Per serving)
3) Baked flaky Char Siew Pastry - $3.80 (Serving of 3)

Steamed Chili Crab Pau

"Whole Sri Lanka Crabs are cooked with their Chili crab sauce before de-shelled and stuffing the essence into their handmade buns for steaming"

An exquisite dish which is exclusive to Red house.
It look like any ordinary 'pau' that you'll have in an Dim Sum restaurant, but you'll be surprised with the generous chili crab filling on your first bite!

It was my first time having a Chili crab pau, and to be honest, I’ve never imagined that Chili crab could actually be used as the filling for pau.
A very different experience from dipping your regular 'mantous' into Chili crab gravy.

$8 for a serving of 3 - Its worth it, considering you'll get the enjoy the best of chili crabs without dirtying your hands!

Steamed Pork Ribs with Yam

The pork ribs were steamed together yam along with black beans & seasoning. The ribs was not overcook and I am absolutely impressed by its tender and springy texture. Yam were added to neutralize the 'jelat' feeling and overall.

A must try dish!

Baked flaky Char Siew Pastry

The crust was indeed flaky as suggested by its name and it's char siew filling was quite generous. It taste quite normal to me but I would rate it above average. It'll be an ideal alternates for char siew pau if you are craving for some not-so-filling char siew dishes.

After the series of Dim Sum starters, here comes the Main Dishes - Seafood!

The line up list

1) Trio Combination of Chef's Signature Squid ($50/$28 per serving)
2) Red House Signature Chili Crab ($4 /100g)
3) Black Pepper Crab ( $4 /100g)
4) Creamy Custard Pawns ($7/100g)
5) Spicy Seafood Combination ($48/$36/$24 per serving)
6) Sauteed Baby Kailan with Minced Garlic. ($20/$15/$10)

Let me start with the Trio Combination of Chef's Signature Squid .

The platter which features 3 different kind of squid in different style: Barbecue, Deep Fried with Salted egg Yolk, Fried baby squid.

The barbecued squid was fresh and the BBQ sauce was not overwhelming. In fact the BBQ flavor brings out freshness of the squid at its very best, and the fried baby squid was a very tasty morsel.

Next, we had the Creamy Custard Prawns.
At $7/100g, you might feel its a little pricey, but it was really worth every cents. The cream custard does not overwhelm the natural taste of the prawns, instead it pairs of well and enhanced it to a higher level!
Custard gives people an impression of being 'Jelat', but not in this case. The proportion was just right between the custard and prawns.

The quality of the prawn is very fresh, judging by the speed for those who peeled the shell, you know it. You, you can even eat it as a whole without peeling to savor the best of this combination – this was one of the highlight of the tasting session.

As I was busying savoring every bits of the custard cream prawns, their signature Chili Crabs and Black pepper Crabs was served.

Time to get our hand soiled with the crabs gravy!

These two crab dishes delivered to my expectation - especially the Chili crab, it was one of the most memorable Chili crab I had.
The gravy is something which I am very particular when it comes to Chili crab.
It must be thick yet not over starched, spiciness must to be a right degree.
Red house's signature Chili crabs fit in the bill perfectly.

The crabs was not overcooked and right in serving size for all of us.
Not to mentioned, the gravy was something really enjoyable with steamed or fried mantou.

This is the real Chili crab experience.

Perhaps I was overwhelm by the awesomeness of the Chili Crab earlier on, the black pepper crab seem a little dull to me. Nevertheless I enjoyed the heady aroma and teasing taste of the black pepper infusing on the sweetness of the crab flesh.

Chili Crab is a must try dish here.

Alongside the duo crab dishes, the Spicy Seafood Combination was quietly served as we are indulging with our crab dishes.
It consist of various seafood such as prawns, squid, scallop and etc... wrapped up in 'peranakan' style. The characteristic of these combination didnt go too well for me. I dont know about other but I feel this dish doesn't brings out the best of the various seafood used.

Last but not least, we had the Kai Lan in minced garlic.
Delightfully light dish which was well executed.
The kai lan was crunchy, sweet with a dash of the minced garlic fragrant.
An excellent light dish to sum up the entire tasting session.

-

Overall, the experience was pleasant.
The service throughout was excellent as the waitress were really attentive to customer's needs. (Not just us, but also to other as what I've observed,)

It a place I'd definitely return for seafood selection (especially the chili crabs!)
